Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz’s beef helped shape the UFC

  • Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz met for the first time in 2007 for World Extreme Cagefighting 26. They immediately didn’t get along. That carried on for nearly a decade, moved from the WEC into the UFC, and went on to improve the future of lighter-weight fighters. On paper, it seems like a pretty straight forward, “I respect you but I sure don’t like you.” But over time, with both fighters growing as the sport did the same, it revealed an interesting cycle.
    Cruz had been forced to look up to Faber when he sat atop the division and Dominick was starting out. Then the table turned and the veteran Faber was left having to answer to the guy he bested in their first get together. All the while, they were both simply trying to raise the bar for all of the lighter-weight fighters who for a long time had been more than an afterthought. In part thanks to their rivalry and the skills they put on display, that changed quickly. And it worked out very well for everyone else because their beef was entertaining as hell.

      His 2nd Benevidez was no easy win and Joe landed the heavier more effective striking, but cruz would end up taking each round with well timed takedowns at the end of each round. Had it not been for that high fight iq with the takedowns he would have lost to Joe Benevidez since Joe was winning on the feet and doing more damage. Dont get it twisted Dom was fighting effectively on the feet too, but was a step or 2 slightly behind Joe. Tbh all of his fights with the TAM guys were close with the exception of the third faber fight when faber was old and out of his prime.

    They leaned into the beef more in the later years. It had become clear that they did not dislike each other. During Cruz’s long absence (due to the rejected cadaver ACL transplant), he and Urijah had been assigned to train with US troops as a part of a UFC promotion. Cruz and he spent much of the time together and had remained in contact (via text) afterwards. Urijah revealed this to Ariel Hewani on the MMA hour and you could see he regretted mentioning it cause it was lessened the beef.

    I’m glad I got to witness this as it happened. Cruz is from my home town and we really didn’t know who the heck he was. He wrestled at one of the best programs in the city but he was rarely mentioned. So yeah, he always had a chip on his shoulder and worked his ass off because he wasn’t even an elite wrestler in high school. It made sense, he came from a poorer side of town and most likely a more hostile, macho environment than most. Faber and Cruz will be one of the best rivalries in the sport due to the legacy they created. In retrospect, both were tremendous fighters and the perfect ambassadors for the merger. Plus who doesn’t love hearing little dudes talking massive trash to each other.

    I love the UFC videos. There’s so much potential here for good videos because rivalries in the UFC are so common. Hope y’all make more.
    Also, Kobe vs smush Parker ?🤣🤣

    Still CANNOT believe how the UFC never gave Dom a rematch after losing to Cody. The guy basically owned the weight class. I'll never forget that fight. I love Dom and it made me sad.

      Iirc, they were going to but then Cody lost to TJ and Dom got injured. Dom wanted to rematch TJ and claimed that if he won he'd immediately give Cody the shot to get that loss back, but then Cody kept losing and Dom got. . . injured . . . again.

    This is the best beef in MMA history. Both came for each other on the mic and in the cage. Other beefs got more play in MSM, but this was the best.

    Cruz the 🐐 bantamweight no cap whatsoever
    If this man didn’t have those injuries I can only imagine what his career would’ve looked like

    • @adz3654

      I can now comfortably say Cruz is the GOAT at Bantamweight with TJ getting caught.

    • @Toosii2times
      @Toosii2times 4 года назад +3

      Adz ! 100% That’s what sealed it for me as well bro.
      Literally EVERYONE was saying how TJ was gon wash him and how rusty he would be having fought 1 fight in 5 years. Then he came out and just slaughtered.TJ was outclassed those first few rounds.
      I will say after Cruz tired TJ started winning the last 2 rounds but it was still close. I still easily give that fight to Cruz tho because TJ never dominated any rounds like Cruz did at the beginning.
      Now that we know TJ is a cheat it puts even more respeck on Cruz name

    • @Toosii2times
      @Toosii2times 4 года назад +3

      Adz ! Oh damn I thought u meant getting caught by Cruz in that fight haha. Yeah I mean him being a cheater added to Cruz legacy but I think him winning that fight was what actually did it for me
