Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz’s beef helped shape the UFC

- Опубликовано: 8 июл 2019
- Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz met for the first time in 2007 for World Extreme Cagefighting 26. They immediately didn’t get along. That carried on for nearly a decade, moved from the WEC into the UFC, and went on to improve the future of lighter-weight fighters. On paper, it seems like a pretty straight forward, “I respect you but I sure don’t like you.” But over time, with both fighters growing as the sport did the same, it revealed an interesting cycle.
Cruz had been forced to look up to Faber when he sat atop the division and Dominick was starting out. Then the table turned and the veteran Faber was left having to answer to the guy he bested in their first get together. All the while, they were both simply trying to raise the bar for all of the lighter-weight fighters who for a long time had been more than an afterthought. In part thanks to their rivalry and the skills they put on display, that changed quickly. And it worked out very well for everyone else because their beef was entertaining as hell.

“I bought a house from all the money I made beating your team” -Dominick Cruz
Still one of the filthiest trash talk lines imo
You and your close eyes. hahaha
Then garbrandt styled on him, so its even I guess
Garbrant couldnt ko Cruz and Cody got finished how many fights in a row now?
Jack Worthington
He hardly styled on him, it was a closer fight than most people remember. Showboating doesn’t mean anything

UFC rivalries are a slight bit better than any other just because of the sanctioned fighting
When it's a real rivalry and not one media infused haha
Celtics/Lakers Will Always Be The Best Rivalry
@@84slaughter
Bosox vs Yankees. They are still rowdy till this day!
TheScotchaholic That’s nothing. Rangers v celtic (soccer) is the greatest sports rivalry.
Glasgow Rangers 1872 this is America nothing is more personal than a yankee Red Sox rivalry
Dillashaw and Garbrandt sort of became the Cruz/Faber of the next generation. Except instead of the wit of Cruz or the likability of Faber, we got the meat-headedness of Garbrandt and the arrogance of Dillashaw lol
Yeah not a perfect duo, but the beefs there. Hopefully we get a trilogy
@@hrntt2184 TJ knocked his ass twice. Trilogy for what? Cody might not even be the same guy anymore.
"Arrogance and meat-headedness" yep described them both perfectly to a T 👍🏼😂
MaxJuilien TJ was juicing garbeandt gets the benefit of the doubt for that one but he still needs to redeem himself from his last knockout loss because fights kinda stupid now
@@thedarkknight646 Doesnt matter. He took 2 hard losses and added another since then. He cant figth TJ without hatred, and thats when he loses. I hope he can comeback as a great contender but fighting TJ again makes absolutely ZERO sense for him.
This should've been titled Dominick Cruz vs Alpha Male
Crazy how many times he's beat them he's like 5-2 with TAM
Molly whoop did that
TJ vs Alpha Male next
You must be new or a casual to not recognize that Cruz's rivalry with Faber should be discussed separately with Cruz's rivalry with TAM as a whole.
Dominick Cruz vs. Alpha Male would've taken like 50 minutes lol
If Faber was a true friend he wouldve given Cody one of his chins so Cody could take a shot later on.
Damn bro. That was savage lmfao.
HAHAHAHAHAAAAAA
Cody looking at Urijah during his training camp like "you greedy bastard"
Lmaooooooooo
My mans chin looking like it could open a beer bottle
"you and your close eyes" lmaoooo 10:45
Cruz's fight intelligence was so good that he beat a whole gym
And then cody pulled up
@Papa Kim He was hurt and he beat TJ who destroyed Cody.
and a gym of ELITE FIGHTERS NOT just a GYM
His 2nd Benevidez was no easy win and Joe landed the heavier more effective striking, but cruz would end up taking each round with well timed takedowns at the end of each round. Had it not been for that high fight iq with the takedowns he would have lost to Joe Benevidez since Joe was winning on the feet and doing more damage. Dont get it twisted Dom was fighting effectively on the feet too, but was a step or 2 slightly behind Joe. Tbh all of his fights with the TAM guys were close with the exception of the third faber fight when faber was old and out of his prime.
@@StianKringle If they run it back at bantamweight Cruz murks Cody. Only reason Cruz lost the first time is because of that cut. Fight was pretty even before that.
You guys need to do more MMA/UFC/Boxing type things there so much potential like a good example is Goege Forman you can do a rewind of when he won the Heavyweights title at like 45 that would be really cool
Rewind for Muhammad Ali punch
Or left hook larry

I did suggest Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz a while back and they did consider as a good idea

They leaned into the beef more in the later years. It had become clear that they did not dislike each other. During Cruz’s long absence (due to the rejected cadaver ACL transplant), he and Urijah had been assigned to train with US troops as a part of a UFC promotion. Cruz and he spent much of the time together and had remained in contact (via text) afterwards. Urijah revealed this to Ariel Hewani on the MMA hour and you could see he regretted mentioning it cause it was lessened the beef.
I want to thank the person who does all the subs for your videos, for non native english speaker it's really sooo helpful and always perfectly done.
Can you please do a deep rewind on the 2014 world cup match between Brazil and Germany
YEEEES
Yeeeeee
Yes
This isn't something that needs a deep rewind.
@@krisdaschwab912 Yeah, aren't those sort of reserved for singular impressive moments that had an amazing buildup? Maybe one for the final of the World Cup which could talk about Germany's and Argentina's struggles as well as the career of Mario Götze (the goalscorer whose career has been an absolute roller-coaster), with obviously the Brazil game receiving a spotlight because it needs to be talked about to understand the final.
nothing but respect for these two I remember watching these fights with my dad on saturday nights man, eating wings and pizza. I literally see a part of dominick in my dad and he will always remind me of my father no matter what. Always a champ in my heart.
Once again Will knocks it out of the park. These were the guys that got me into the UFC and their rivalry was one of the top 5 in MMA history. Very well done!

I also liked how McGregor and Faber formed a bit of a bond and mutual respect throughout the season.
Thank you for making this video!
The title is no lie. This rivalry is what made me tune into UFC for the first time.
I think uriah was the assistant coach for the wrestling team, not the football team.
Was going to say the same thing. Still an awesome video, though, and a phenomenal series.
Oh my it’s daddy Mullen
Never watched anything to do with the UFC, or any MMA kinda thing, but man, what an actual lovely ending to a beef for once. This kinda story is the exact thing that gets me interested in watching new things. That's fantastic.

Dude, your video has been in my suggestion for the past week, I was actually starting to get annoyed, just took a peak, and ended up watching the whole thing. Awesome, detailed and well edited vid. Thank you. Subed. 👌 ️
Oh boy! I’ve been waiting on this one for awhile!
Please do more beef histories I look forward to them all the time
'You and your close eyes' had me in tears.
I dont think he was an assistant coach for the UC Davis football team... It was probably wrestling, like his sweatshirt says
That ending with Cruz and Faber with the poster made tear up. Wonderful stuff.
Major respect to both those dudes 💪🏼
11:18 You know somebody is loving the moment when they just stand there with an open mouth smile haha
I’m glad I got to witness this as it happened. Cruz is from my home town and we really didn’t know who the heck he was. He wrestled at one of the best programs in the city but he was rarely mentioned. So yeah, he always had a chip on his shoulder and worked his ass off because he wasn’t even an elite wrestler in high school. It made sense, he came from a poorer side of town and most likely a more hostile, macho environment than most. Faber and Cruz will be one of the best rivalries in the sport due to the legacy they created. In retrospect, both were tremendous fighters and the perfect ambassadors for the merger. Plus who doesn’t love hearing little dudes talking massive trash to each other.
So happy y'all made this one!
Great video guys

This actually isn't the worst idea I've ever heard.
That is brutal and awesome. But we know 7-9 will own Fisher always

Excellent work, thoroughly enjoyed
And amazing job on this vid. Thank you

Damn I was watching fighting through the age of loneliness again earlier. Love the MMA vids
The writer of that show has a podcast you will love
10:53 "You and your close eyes"
I was always so busy looking at Faber's Butt-Chin, I didn't even realize how close his eyes were. I'll be damned.
Nicely made video bro
Im a new sub love the format u got going good work my friend
Sure there was beef at one point but you can’t refer to this as a rivalry. Fabre beat a 21 year old kid who still had a full time job and from there on Cruz out classed and surpassed Faber at every corner
This beef layed the foundation of UFC rivalries. To the point we have a brawl after a fight (conor/khabib).
no dude tito vs ken shamrock layed the foundations
Nothing beats a Beef History upload.
Winsorvy been waiting for it
Great video
An even messier feud between TJ Dillashaw and Team Alpha Male would be a great Beef History!
Point of information for (1:38), Urijah didn't serve as an assistant coach for football, rather he was helping Lennie Zalesky with the Aggie wrestling team while using the wrestling area as an impromptu training center. Fun fact: Mark Munoz was also on the wrestling staff at that point. Two of the nicest guys who ever worked here.
The hand shake freaking makes you so happy. Cool to see people squash beef
One of your most interesting videos yet.
Man, I grew up watching Faber in WEC as a teen. Easily my favorite fighter for introducing me to the sport. I always appreciated his graciousness in losing (though he didn’t really lose in WEC days).
“Close eyes” lol I never realized that Faber’s eyes were that close together.
Thanks for doing one on the UFC! 👍
y'all did great work on this
MixedMollyWhoppery has a great series on this rivalry, and then some TJ / Cruz, and TJ / Garbrandt stuff.
it’s the best series about the rivalry
Shaq and Barkley beef if you haven’t done one yet!! Include the TNT confrontations too lol
Amazing video. So good.
I hope Faber wins tomorrow. That would mean just about everything for his legacy

Love these
I love both of these fighters you have to love the dominator and urijah faber is my favourite fighter ever such a poetic story
Still CANNOT believe how the UFC never gave Dom a rematch after losing to Cody. The guy basically owned the weight class. I'll never forget that fight. I love Dom and it made me sad.
Iirc, they were going to but then Cody lost to TJ and Dom got injured. Dom wanted to rematch TJ and claimed that if he won he'd immediately give Cody the shot to get that loss back, but then Cody kept losing and Dom got. . . injured . . . again.
Lmao I forgot all about the "close eyes" insult. Hahaha😂😂
Thanks for the video, your voice is made for story telling.
I was retired for 3 years and you're still trying to get the belt from me ....summed up Fabers career in a savage way
How can you cover MMA and not do a video on Chuck vs Tito? That’s like the best beef in the whole sport.
Do TJ Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt
probably my favorite beef video so far
This is the best beef in MMA history. Both came for each other on the mic and in the cage. Other beefs got more play in MSM, but this was the best.
Cruz the 🐐 bantamweight no cap whatsoever
If this man didn’t have those injuries I can only imagine what his career would’ve looked like
I can now comfortably say Cruz is the GOAT at Bantamweight with TJ getting caught.
Adz ! 100% That’s what sealed it for me as well bro.
Literally EVERYONE was saying how TJ was gon wash him and how rusty he would be having fought 1 fight in 5 years. Then he came out and just slaughtered.TJ was outclassed those first few rounds.
I will say after Cruz tired TJ started winning the last 2 rounds but it was still close. I still easily give that fight to Cruz tho because TJ never dominated any rounds like Cruz did at the beginning.
Now that we know TJ is a cheat it puts even more respeck on Cruz name
Adz ! Oh damn I thought u meant getting caught by Cruz in that fight haha. Yeah I mean him being a cheater added to Cruz legacy but I think him winning that fight was what actually did it for me
