  • Thanks go to Suzanne and the Team at Gallagher Europe for the fencing! I've already ordered the same system again so I can set it up in more fields!
    Also let me know your thoughts on our forage rape field. Why is it so poor in places?

    ABOUT ME
    I’m 33 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
    At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
    I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
    I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
    A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
    I watched a few farm vlogs on RUclips and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
    Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

    I appreciate you trying to improve your sheep farming including the fields where they graze. Finding the right crop or grass to suit the land must be difficult. You always seem to work out what's best or better. The struggle with land, weather and money is real and I appreciate all the hard work you and Lizzie do for the sheep and for your family. Makes me rather proud actually.

    When I was a lad my parents got a small flock of Shropshire sheep for the family farm. Great fun. They are supposedly easier to fence for than Texel and other more sporty breads but they didnt even notice the old 500V cattle fence. (I suppose their fleece protected them)
    We got a Galagher energiser running of the mains that would run up to 65km of fence in moderate foliage. If I remember right it was 3.5kV and up to 100mA pulses.
    The Sheep could feel the voltage from a distance and never got close to the fence and the grass under the fence kept clear of the wires - no need to mow under it.
    I used to be able to tighten the fence with an insulated pinch tool and wearing my wellingtons without removing the power. Not so with the Galagher. It hit right through the insulation on the pinch tool and the boots. Live and learn :-)

    Hook the 3 ends on a post walk to end with it tucked under you arm carry arm load of posts and throw them out as you go and hook on when at end then put wires on posts on way back tighten job done. This is common practice in New Zealand. I personally only use 2 wires if you have good power they won’t touch it.
    Electric fencing is good for pasture management in the winter

      In regards to planting crops. The continental difference could be a little issue. Do you have facilities to store what you grow. Also machines to plant and harvest. That could be a bite of any profit.

    Love Gallagher fencers! Can't go wrong with them, Cammy, and they last for decades. If you put in pemanent electric, I've found the 18 joule model is so handy as the bottom wire is so hot (enerigized) it keeps the grass from growing near it and grounding the fenceline. The one you've received from them with the built in battery is such a great innovation, you don't have to worry about someone stealing your battery! Also a very handy addition to any field with dog activity/walking paths near.

      I worked in a different area to you so never met you in the job, but I think you will have bits of it you miss and bits you won't.
      My pals who are recent retirees from sheep farming in Perthshire went back to having a very small flock as they got bored. They are living from pension and investment money, plus some from inheritance. The sheep are now just covering costs and keeping them occupied. Hopefully you and Lizzie grow the sheep business to bring in more income in the future, but even with marginal profits it's a great life for the family.

    The little I know about growing brassica family plants, the purple leaves can be caused by the plants being stressed (too much/little water one example) or a lack of phosphorous in the ground. But it's so hard to tell what it possibly could be from just a video

    A blend of different forage crops typically work better than a single one. Where the forage rape does poorly, clover, vetch, corn, different grasses, alfalfa, or peas might do better. The different behaviors of the various species also create synergies.

    @johnpeppard7423 9 месяцев назад +4

    Lambs on brassica crops need ad-libitum access to a fibre source such as silage, hay or straw for their rumen. With the creep feeder and the kale it’ll be rocket fuel for them

    very interesting that you are getting into electric fencing, that is pretty much all folks use for sheep around here to keep them moving around a pasture. Gallagher is the brand most folks use. So many variables to farming. I did think poor rape area looked like a water logged soil issue- standing water pretty much confirmed it. The good part looks like great tillable land though with the way it was growing. interested to see what formula works for your farm.

    I have just one bit of a comment, which you probably already know since you have grazed brassicas before but no harm mentioning it, I have always found that lambs do very well on rape but only put lambs on it that you are fairly certain will be finished before it runs out because they absolutely melt if you have to put them back on grass .

    One thing I'd advise is to add a few strands of wire close together, at about dog height, and teach wandering dogs to fear that electric fence, too !! My border collies will put my goats back inside the fence, but won't go past it unless I open the gate and invite them in. The neighbors' dogs learned the lesson, too. And be careful with those plastic fence posts. Maybe those are more sturdy, but the ones I can get here have a bad habit of snapping off right above the the metal stake, leaving an annoying stub that can be difficult to remove from the ground.

Assuming the better than good kale is going to be strip grazed, just wondering how you get an electric fence in. I am guessing they will have a run back to grass to prevent thyroid dysfunction. When ever Cammy is watching Jock, I get so nervous he’s been surrounded by sheep, he is constantly near things that could pinch his finger than I remember they are use to it their Scottish. My kids would get hurt just standing. Lol

    What variety of brassica is it cammy? I would say that poor stuff is compaction/too wet/ sour. One or the other or a mix of maybe all 3 . I use them for summer lamb finishing and also during the winter for 4-6 weeks prelamb for multiple bearing ewes . Done well the stock performance can be exceptional

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  9 месяцев назад

      Forage rape. Yeah seems to be wet / compaction is the issue!

    She sounds just like Emma Gray! I had to keep checking to see if Emma had paid you a visit. lol I wonder if that fencing will discourage dogs and foxes? "a doddle even for you" loll Not all varieties of rapeseed are edible for humans due to the presence of erucic acid which can effect your heart. Some varieties have less and are ok to eat. I don't know about forage rape.

    Brilliant crop. Out of interest, how did you establish the crop? Spray off and overseed, ploughing, rotavate or another way??

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  9 месяцев назад

      We sprayed off, went over it with heavy discs and then sowed the rape seed in. It means we have a nice firm surface that shouldn’t get too mucky. That said the crop would have been better if ploughed. Although it would have costs a lot more!

    Good vid. We grew rape years ago and it did well as a plough and broadcast crop under sown with grass. Lambs get fat really quick. Too fat if you’re not on the ball. How did you plant your rape? Is it slot seeded straight into a grass sward?

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  9 месяцев назад

      We sprayed off the grass then disced the ground then had a big seed drill thing put the seed in.

    I grow 20 hectares of Greenland forage rape here in NZ. Your poor areas look like compaction/ water logging issues. Maybe need to sort out the drainage, even run a moleplough the area. The really tall areas have more fertility

      We usually get 3 grazings with lambs over summer/ autumn then shut it up in April and let it regrow and graze 8 months old cattle on it in late winter early spring. We grow about 10-12 tonnes of dry matter total. We plant rape paddocks into chicory and clovers. Spray out and Direct drill our paddocks except those that need cultivation

    I think you should be able to eat rape leaves, it's just another brassica cultivar. Try cooking like spring greens or kale? On why that bit wasn't growing, it was so consistently miserable that I wonder if there might be residual weedkiller against broadleaved plants? I'm no farmer though!
