- Being just three hours away from Sydney, we decided to explore the laidback Australian capital for a week. Stay tuned to see what Canberra has to offer, including a story where I got attacked by a magpie.

This is my 204th RUclips video of all-time and the 1st video in 2023.
as a canberran myself I can’t thank you enough for mentioning the weirdly threatening road safety signs
The bad grass pun billboards are better.
"PEOPLE DIE ON ACT ROADS" I mean... people die in other states too but thanks for the warning?
@@Wow-uk2on I mean Canberra is just a large suburb. You could be forgiven for thinking no one dies in the 20min it takes to drive literally anywhere.
same in vic mate
a saw one a couple weeks ago that got graffitied to say pee kills
I love living in Canberra, but I prefer when other Aussies hate it. We want to keep it our little secret!
mate its still ass
You have done my city justice mate, not the first I've heard people say that about Floriade tho 😂 Little disappointed you didn't show the Dong-owl statue too.
just looked up the statue and wow, what an icon
Ah, a fellow Belconnenite.
@@T2norway hahaha that's the street i live on :)
its meant to be an owl? like unironically?
@@cewla3348 It's hard to believe, but yes, it's unironically meant to be an owl. Canberra is the capital of Australia which means it's where the parliament is, and a group of owls is known as a parliament.
Your videos are insanely well made. I don't really have any interest for Canberra but I still watched the entire video just for the amazing editing and style.
As an Aussie you got me more excited about Canberra than I ever have been visiting there. It's cool to see someone from somewhere as far away as Norway really diving into Australia, thanks for the great videos as always
He gets more interested about Canberra than I ever have been living here 😭
Came for the Wii font, stayed for the Australian tourism vlogs - I get to visit for the first time in May when I go to Melbourne so you’ve caught me at the perfect time
I moved to Canberra a week ago so this video is serendipitous. Also, best Australian accent on a Norwegian I've ever heard.
That's true, this chap sounds half Aussie and half cultivated midlands or such like.
apologies for hating so much on that gigantic roundabout
Dont worry, we fucking hate it as well.
It's called city hill. No one knows what the point of having it...
@@sancheeezLuckily with the raising of London Circuit, it's somehow less intimidating, because it's a tiny bit slower (still not safe) and I think there were some temporary barriers.
Hopefully we'll chuck it though, as is the theoretical intention, though ambiguous
It was hated even more by motorists as they predated roundabouts in the rest of Australia by many decades. Too confusing for simple Australian drivers.
We hate it too
One thing that would be cool is to do an aesthetics comparison of Melbourne Metro and Sydney Trains for the different purposes they serve.
i actually have a video in the works about public transportation in sydney! we’ll see if i make something related to melbourne as well. thanks for your suggestion!
Hey love to see my home shown off, I love this city and I am glad for more people to see it! Thanks for the great video
Thank you for this video, seeing these familiar sights bring back so much memories😢Canberra has been home for the past 5 years for me, now that I’ve left, it brings tears to my eyes. It may be a boring travel location for most, but it’s a magical city if you live there - it grows on you💕
Foreigners tend to appeciate Canberra far more than Australians do. I'm a Canberran and i've travelled a lot, but always love coming home to Canberra. Very few cities have made me think i could live there after being spoilt living in a place like Canberra. Ironically our government does tend to look towards europe and scandinavian countries for ideas more than anywhere else also.
Canberrean here. You did a good job of showing my city. As for the magpies, my daughters used to ride to school and they would tell me of the magpies that swoopped them but it took about 25 years for one to swoop me. Now, I'm terrified too.
lived there my whole life and I would say that this is a pretty spot on representation of canberra! if you're looking for an exciting holiday destination i would definitely not reccomend it, but canberra is a very lovely place to relax, and especially to live in :)
Other countries use cameras (that are probably broken) to avoid traffic outlaws, Canberra is literally telling you're gonna die if you do such stuff.
Awesome video as always! Looks like a nice cozy town!
Canberra, actually has a very low road death toll, although, since it is has such a low population, this is probably to be expected.
So the problem from the authorities point of view is complacency, hence the signs that are attempting to reverse the complacency of drivers in Canberra.
Oh they have cameras. Zillions of them.
@@ANTHONYGL23 Despite our low death toll, they still make a song and dance each and every time there is a road fatality. First world problems🐘
Love these video essays, feel like i could listen to you talk about anything.
Thank you for a new video! Your videos are so professional and good. This are the perfect videos that I like!
Great video. Really enjoyed your cinematography and it’s always fascinating to hear what foreigners think of our major cities. Cheers! 👌
A note on that annoying roundabout: 'Civic' or the CBD is actually considered east/right side of that annoying roundabout. The left side is primarily the Australian National University campus with a series of offices on the edge and sparse restaurants.
Canberra is a brilliant city to live in. Well planned and intelligently maintained, it provides a phenominal standard of living with plenty of opportunities. There is no shortage of wonderful people that live in this great city.
Plenty of great places to visit, enjoy and appreciate. 🙌
Every single Australian has a magpie story. That's how you know you're a true Australian. Great video - I will be moving to Canberra within the next few years as my partner is in the Navy and has to study at the academy there and I work as an analyst with the Govt (jobs prospects are amazing in Canberra). It's an unusual city - the federal government offices attract the best and brightest in the country so the demographics are tilted towards high paid, well-educated people.
Lol no. The best and brightest aren't flocking to APS jobs.
But they are well educated, not badly paid, and make up a huge proportion of the act. Which makes it the most middle class place in the country.
The average time people stay in Canberra is 6 year's there is a reason for that I put up with it for 5 that was enough for me
"best and brightest"? None of the Canberra-based bureaucrats I've had to deal with could be described that way!
The best and brightest want absolutely nothing to do with any government ever
loved the chill vibe in this video!! really well made. keep it up!!
Oh wow, you actually got to Canberra!
Just a note, be careful on the planned city topic (urban planning is a big deal here), because, it's kind of sad -- because, it's not that the city was planned that gives some of the odd features (Sydney & Melbourne were planned on grids), but the era.
Canberra was majorly built after car-dependence and suburbia were enshrined in many countries' planning.
A nice little pdf to skim is "The Griffin Legacy" (spend time admiring the subdivision map of City Hill), it shows what could have been (basically urbanist utopia) if the Griffins (Walter and Marion) had been employed faithfully rather than as the creators of a plan that could be used in any way the organiser's wanted (Californian bungalows galore...more American than the Americans who wanted Australian).
It was actually a lot of symbolism we lost, like people above parliament (democracy), and equality with cumulative massing (ie not Euclidean zoning) -- basically liveable streetscapes, as we see with organic non-planned cities.
But anyways, Canberra is becoming a better city _now,_ as with many cities, and it will be interesting to see what happens.
All very true! And indeed, it was the Griffins, not the Burley Griffins; and Marion (Mahony Griffin) was half of the design partnership (look her up) but of course Walter achieved most of the credit. It might be different today. We Australians are still a bit backward, but we were very backward in Griffin's day and it seems we were bamboozled by family-derived middle names and so Burley (and Mahony) became part of the Griffin's names whether the latter wanted this or not.
And 'organisers' is plural, not possessive.
@@Fomites Yes, autocorrect, I don't pay much attention to what I write 😶
Sydney was definitely NOT planned on a grid, what are you talking about?!
I was stunned by this too!
Glad you said biking, this is one of the best things to do in the ACT by far.
A video on the town where I live was not one I expected from this great channel 😂
Lovely video, need to visit Canberra again.
Indeed, Canberra IS three hours away from Sydney if driving a motor vehicle (depening on start point and destination are and time and day of the week). But the time would differ if considering cycling, pogo stick, supersonic jet, sedan chair, goose-stepping or even just walking.
So others have probably commented this, but they’ve just begun a huge project to reshape the way the roads work around City Hill. This is being done part of the extension of the light rail network southwards over the lake, but it’s long been recognised that having a nice hill with a park in the middle of the city that’s inaccessible due to being surrounded by a road is kind of ridiculous. When the project’s finished you will be able to seamlessly walk across the middle of City Hill, just like you wanted to.
They have given it the rickets, a cancerous sign of a corrupt government led by a poo pushing gay chief minister
Honestly, you missed my favourite museum in Canberra- Questacon! Questacon is amazing! I do agree about Floriade. I personally prefer the National Folk Festival (which is on right now). Also, Gold Creek Village is a great and underrated place to visit too :)
As I found kids aged 7 to 15 love Canberra. They can cycle around safely and there are interactive kid friendly museums like Questacon.
Beautiful Canberra ❤❤
the maggpie animation brought a huge ass grin to my face
Tip for avoiding magpies - have eyes on the back of your head. They don't like to swoop straight at you, they swoop from behind to warn you about coming back. You can try painting eyes on your helmet, or most locals use zip ties to create a spiky, threatening head that maggies are less likely to dive bomb
Eyes on the back of your head don't work. Not sure if the zip ties work very well either. Mount a camera on the back of your head
Those bicycle lanes completely separated from the road sound like a dream for me.
Although the city looks a bit too artificial imo
Improving rapidly!
Come visit in about 5 years, will probably be a lot better. But still, there are a few good pockets.
I moved to Canberra partly because of the separated bicycle paths (and clean air, easy traffic, good roads, good drinking water, civilised people, green spaces, access to nature parks by walking and national parks withing minutes drive, relative quiet, visual aesthetics, progressive government...) but the cold weather and distance from the ocean is a compromise.
They failed to mention that most of the shops close at 5pm. Also in the winter canberra pretty much shuts down.
6:30 Thank you for choosing our takoyaki of Octoball Canberra!
The best one of those road signs is the one in Belco that says "PEE KILLS"
😂that’s my fave
I wonder if that was done by the same people who... altered... the suburb sign for cook
I live in belco-bruce so I've passed that sign countless times, still crack up every time I see it
id totally watch a top 10 embassy video where you go to each one in person
I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
I live in Sydney and i've never been to Canberra but now I kinda want to go
Do!
There's now a track that goes over City Hill!
Glad you saw The Arboretum.
You never know when those australian roads will brutally attack you. Stay safe, folks.
It's not the roads it's the lose nuts behind the wheels

Subscribed expecting more video essays about music but loved this one also. Keep up the good work!
thank you! i’ll def make more music video essays in the future, so thanks for being patient ˙ ͜ʟ˙
one of the very few times I'v seen someone that (properly) understands the Parliamentary triangle
Nice passing along of the official narrative.
I've lived in Canberra my whole life, it's pretty boring when you've been here for so long, but it is an amazingly pretty city at times with it's very green surroundings and planned design.
Atleast until you go south into the Suburbs, then it kinda just sucks. Still some amazing spots around southside regardless.
Your vids are so good
Amazing 7 minutes
A wonderful trip in a graceful way that makes me excited to visit Australian Capital
Territory
Or I ask you if any activity of the Moroccan embassy🇲🇦 caught your attention?
Thank you ❤🇭🇲
1:58 "but this is not a top 10 embassy video" I mean maybe not but I would watch that
PNG. British. Finnish. China for that 70s housing commission look.
China, PNG and Japan are my favourites probably in that order.
@@tallaganda83 I'd give Sri Lanka an honourable mention. The building looks like a cheap post and beam concrete afterthought. But then you go to sri Lanka and that's how everything is built.
10/10 for authenticity.
I didn't know people outside Australia didn't call their city centers CBD, I thought it was like a common phrase in the English language but I guess not
Never heard of it before coming here. I was very confused because of cbd oil haha
under rated video

Amazing work. You can make pretty much any topic interesting and appealing with your great audio and video editing and design. You're like a more laid Back "Ahoy," on youtube, if you know who that is.
I wish they had magpie signs with the same vibe 😂
It is extremely cold there.
I always though the Danish/Norwegian embassy looked like a Danish/Norwegian primary school. Which seemed very fitting.
Rishi Sunak Meets Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese

You missed my favourite road safety sign, perhaps because it's a little less threatening? "MISSING A CALL WON'T KILL YOU" Kill is in red, of course.
Makes Adelaide look like Dubai
As a Canberran I was a little sad you didn’t mention anything about Belconnen as it is Canberra’s most populous district and the district I live in but I’ll give you a pass cuz tbh there’s nothing particularly special about it. It’s just good in many ways, but nothing about it is great but it truly is a beautiful, relaxed and natural place to live that no one else should move to because the rent is getting so fucking high it’s starting to ruin it
Another thing to do is geocaching, so many good ones there!!
+++🤩🦘++++CANBERRA 🦘+++🤩🐸+++LOVED IT+++🤣
"lane one form". You read/see it as " form one lane" when driving towards it . Similar wish reverse spelling of ambulance on vehicle, where you will see it as ambulance on your side mirror.
YOU DIDN'T EVEN MENTION QUESTACON WHAFDAWHBAEHIJFGSEWDABF
thas the best part
As someone who has lived in canberra for more than a year I can confirm the signs don't lie as there has been 3 fatal car crashes on my road within 3 months of eachother
What's the title of the song that started playing at 2:04 ?
you hath not mentioned the questacon
Those octopus balls are possibly the best thing about Floriade
what about questacon?
Wow 😊
Don't forget this: Speed cameras are used in the act.
That U B NXT sign is so 2006!
Thanks for this take on our home, it's pretty cool to see what an outsider thinks.
1. Yeah, the maggies will kill you, esp in spring.
2. Yes, people die on ACT roads.
If you look carefully you'll see us locals running down cyclists on the bike paths.
3. The big arse roundabout can be a pain, but we don't think twice about it.
yo man what do u use to edit your videos? im still waiting for the next one man keep it up! ❤️
after effects and final cut pro! thanks for your comment ˙ ͜ʟ˙
Lived there for a year coming from England back in 2004. Nice enough place, but just felt a bit soulless
Drive n text U B NEXT
Canberra is a great city.
You found 3 things? Wow
Miss Canberra and ANU
as a canberran i never realized that its a very tourist-y city - it always feels like a city where its built for the person living there but, yaknow, the 90% govmnt worker statistic proves me wrong
The bike paths are predominantly for leisure. Commuting is a pain. B. Griffith designed only the centre, and only a little was implemented from his plan as he was fired by the British Australian politicians who hated him. A bit as with Utzon, the Opera House designer. Anglo Australians don't really like foreigners. And it is still de facto a colony, never declared independence, but the government is trying hard to create national feeling.
Having lived in Canberra for three years... yeah...
why the flags half mast
I am assuming the video was shot in September 2022 so most likely for the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Poor roundabout
What an incredible video. What camera was it primarily shot on?
thank you! everything was shot on my iPhone 13 Pro ˙ ͜ʟ˙
Weird to see where I live in a doco like this lmao.
I moved to Canberra in 1981, all was good, but in 1986 while I was walking to the bus stop, I got hit in the head by a magpie. What the hell!! It was only then did I realise what was the most dangerous animal in Australia
Cool..
I'm supposed to live there for 4 months, anybody got advices?
No whinging about living here.
Get a mountain bike and hit the trails!
from canberra and just moved to sydney, videos are great and very true. I hate the magpies with a passion!
I hope one takes the top of your head off. They were here first & they're remarkable, clever, loyal & better than every human being, especially animal haters.
@ArcShifter Oh, yes I have! What spirit!! What a thrill!!!
same here
Canberrans (people who live in Canberra) don't call it 'the CBD', they call it 'Civic', don't ask me why...
5:05 Smell the flowers?
Ah yes I love cycling past beautiful flowering trees, only to be slapped in the face moments later by the smell of semen lmao
No joke, these trees are everywhere,
and they really do smell strongly af haha
The joke of Australia is there.
BLAKE KIRK @ 5:21 BLUE SHORTS TRUMPET LORD
Lane one form 😂
And pentagrams!
good video though ..not lane one form -> form one lane or form one (p)lane(t)
canberra is not the only place there are backwards sentences🙂
