My ex husband, white from Boston. Me Latina born in AZ lived in Mesa AZ when Sheriff Joe Arpaio threatened to round up illegals and deport them. I tried to explain to my white husband how scared and angry that made me. I explained that most people see brown skin and automatically assume the person is NOT a US citizen. I further explained that the state of Arizona has over 20 federally recognized tribes and most people cannot tell the difference between a Yaqui, Mexican, Pima, Hopi, or Dine. He did not understand the amount of micro aggression that I experienced growing up in white America.

@@akwaabab8504 Two things can be true at the same time. Black people can be brave for finding strength to endure all the crap this country and the world throw at us, and white people can be brave for self-reflecting and then acknowledging and publicizing their error to encourage other white people to do the same. If we want white people to take up the reigns and do the work to solve their own issues, we need to give props where props are due and not diminish their effort. We need allies, not enemies.

Something similar happened to me in Minnesota, I'm Black and my boyfriend was white and we went up north to his cabin one year and we stopped off at a restaurant on the way to eat and play pool. I immediately felt I wasn't welcomed there by the vibe and the stares I received, I was the only Black person. I asked my boyfriend if I was safe there, he saw the fear in my face and didn't argue with me, he knew I was right to feel the way I did and we left right away. I'm sure he didn't expect me to be in danger in the small town where his cabin was, but he had never taken a Black girlfriend there before and hadn't thought about safety as an issue. THAT'S what white privilege is! Thanks for sharing this story, Dixon!

Speaking up about the truth of this injustice is our responsibility. To carry the light of freedom is our responsibility. We do it on behalf of those before us who were too ignorant to admit that it even exists. We get to carry the scales of justice forward. We get the honor of admission and taking responsibility for this wrong as long as it takes. When the last broken heart has been mended, when the last broken spirit has been comforted, we will have delivered our burden. Until then, we speak it outlook, we carry the banner, we deliver Justice. We deliver healing. We deliver peace. 🕊

Well one night they all went to film something and I took my plus one son aside and said to him “ If you get into trouble you are the first one who is going to get pinched. You are our son, do you understand ? “.
They did not get in trouble that night, nor did they become RUclipsrs. But I worry, even living in a blue city in a blue state. When I said as much to a friend last week she couldn’t understand why. And I may sound crazy, but the police are going to become federalized and the prisons privatized and for profit.

The level of anxiety I feel when invited to their rural homes or going to fairs in a small town is something they don't get. When Charlottesville happened I canceled a trip up north in Pittsburgh, NH to visit college friends. They were pissed at me for canceling and I felt betrayed as to why they did not understand. To get where they lived I would be riding solo and and near the Canadian border your cell phone service is out. That alone is not a good feeling. I enjoy driving alone along long winding roads, but I'm also always very conscious of my surroundings. I felt ill at ease when Trump did not discourage those people at Charlottesville. I took it as a warning, and realized I didn't feel safe in the country I was born and grew up in.

Thank you for this. please, keep sharing. This is more important than you'll ever know! I just went through something similar. How I wish they could have said the words i just heard from you... it's a truly wicked brand of Evil, supremacy is. It plays on one's instincts to prioritize comfort. a self gaslighting that servers critically thinking & true imagined empathy. Autonomy & no responsibility through Cognitive dissonance.

There are 50 shades to evil. Each just as sinister as the next. Though the vary in tone remember it's nature & which ever you might find yourself more partial to...as we humans are beings of both light & dark... the facade of lesser is only that within you it's appealing to.

    I heard that,,
“ Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing. “
    We’re human, it’s natural .
It’s important that every now and then we force ourselves mentally out of our comfort zones. This applies to the black girlfriend also because that experience could have turned out totally opposite of what was expected.
I’m not saying to walk in on a
Klan meeting ❌, or anything like that , but racism is a battle that should be fought from both sides. The world is changing, slowly.

Oh, my. There are many blacks in Oak Ridge. Why these things happened is an embarrassment. As a school bus driver I’ve taken many students of all races to Oak Ridge many times over many years & never had any problems. I’ve have had problems of racial discrimination aimed at the kids I’ve got with me but I don’t let the person or people get too far with it before I put them to shame & teach them a little lesson along the way. My students have always felt safer with me being their driver because I would lookout for all of them. This even included my football & baseball players. You not only have to be understanding of racism. You have to be standing up to racism. ❤️❤️❤️
