An additional tip # 6, bring a little something to nosh on while waiting for the epic light. (granola bar, Slim Jims, pickled eggs lol) That way you won't want to leave prematurely. Never leave early! :D Love the previews of the F4 videos. Loving them! Thanks Gavin!
Gav, when you leave your alter ego as a funny man, you give such good advise and tips that are easy for us normal people to understand, you are second to none mate and i thank you, but dont ever, ever lose that other ego, you're a legend matey, keep up the great work
Thank goodness you posted a new video.. I was getting worried about you after your FB page disappeared.. I was figuring Amanda finally got you like Kathy Bates did to James Caan in Misery.. lol
Absolutely brilliant. Fototripper is the man!!! Just love the way he presents and teaches he’s a legend and so so funny gotta love the northern humour. So much so he’s inspired me to create my own channel. Prob shite in comparison but you’ve gotta start somewhere 🤣🤣🤣 I even nicked the start of his name as well but don’t tell him will ya .... thanks 🙏
Terrific pointers. Wonderful shots. Good friends. Abundant talent. Your posts are superlative. As always, thanks for brightening our days. Melot to brighten your nights . On me, after this is over or if I figure out how to get it to you in these times. Cheers.
Amanda still paying for the fuel? LOL Thanks for the tips. I have a hard time with number 5. Thanks for the preview of the F4 trip. I hope Adam was able to get his shot. No wonder he gets grumpy. I would too, lol.
Agree Gavin, definitely hang around if you can. Didn't get the shot of the sun coming up through the Arch in Durdle Door in December (yes I know but it's iconic for a reason and I'm an enthusiast not professional !) but after most of the photographers had left for about 3mins the sun punched through some moody clouds and I got the sun rays in the back ground to the Door. Tip 6 for me is to have a Thermos mug so it keeps my coffee hot for any long drives at an ungodly hour! The f4 trailer definitely wetting my appetite!!
love this , especially the magical Sunsrise explanation , but gotta say your Stalker seems like you are having greater comfort with her. Just Sayin !ps _ always kind of liked her , if anything she is great helper !
Vancouver Island is absolutely gorgeous my family live there.. Wish I was a dslr landscape photographer then 😢.. But hopefully I'll still return one day to get those stunning views 😊🙏
Something extra that I do to make sure the clouds will have color where I shoot is to not just look at the location where im shooting but also other towns further away. I usually look at towns 100-150km away. If there are clear or high clouds I'm sure. Great vid as always.
In Scotland and fairly new to professional photography this video has been great to watch. I am up in 4 hours for sunrise lol so watching as many videos as i can! This has been great. I will be sure to take a sandwich with me haha
GH, thanks for these video, I enjoy to them. I recognize and appreciate the dedication, creativity and effort it takes to make attention grabbing videos
At the moment this is easy --in bed roll to the left sunrise in the back garden and to the right sunset in the front garden ---had a few painful mishaps with the tripod though --lol
LOL! Adam bumping into Tom, and Tom's reaction totally cracked me up. Ah, another awesome video to keep me sane during quarantine times in NYC! Love it! PS: PLEASE tell me you guys are going to release this adventure in a DVD with the outtakes/bloopers! I don't care if it's unedited, just take my money!! :)
Too bad I didn't know you were here! I would have bought you both Breakfast! great video as usual! As you leave the area and head north on highway 97 there is a high bridge that crosses the Crooked River. There is a lovely old metal railway bridge that crosses the gorge. If you pull into the park on the left prior to the bridge you can get a lovely image of the metal bridge. You can use the bridge as a leading line over the gorge! I love that area. Also there is a very nice and easily accessible view of an Eagle nest in March or April near the overnight camping area in Smith Rock State Park. If you let me know next time you are in Central Oregon I can show you a few places.
That’s my experience too the light is the best 30 mn before sunrise that’s when you get all the colours especially with clouds. Sunrise itself is usually pretty plain compared to that
Great video and great tips. Glad to see you took a drive through my home town/back yard. Smith Rock is always a great place to shoot but the best light is sunrise. You do have to be careful that you don't have a shadow cutting across the rocks at the west end. Better shots can come as you go even higher than you were so you can position the distant mountains through the gap in the rocks though I seem to remember you getting a pretty awesome shot from the top after sunset with the city lights below. Sunset can maybe/sorta work if you can work the light reflecting off the Crooked River at the bottom but unless you do some "unrealistic" Photoshopping the cliffs on the west (far) end will be in heavy shadow.
Loved seeing Smith Rock footage. Sigh. Can’t go there for awhile unfortunately but it brings back memories of being there. Tip #6 - Watch sunrise shoots on RUclips because you can’t leave the damn house...

The best behaved that your stalker has been so far!!! Great tips mate, as always! Not bad that your face looks like a neglected avocado in the morning, mine looks like smashed crab....🤣🤣
Great video Gavin. Just a note: the data for your weather apps (zero low clouds) was most likely accurate. The problem is Smith Rock is in central Oregon - a vast geographical area that doesn't play by anybodies meteorological rules (I know - I live on up the road in eastern Oregon - an even vaster area . . . ). But sometimes you get lucky with the weather! Beautiful sunrise shots. Great tips.
Good to see you again the other day on Mount Benson. Surprised you remembered me, seeing as how you got me started prior to your RUclips fame and fortune. For some reason I'm not able to paste the camper photos you wanted to see to this comment
I bought a headtorch for that very reason. Jumped in the car, drove to Edinburgh, well before daybreak I may add. Yet could not find that bloody castle. It used two AA batteries. Was that why?
Two weeks since his last upload. We need to initiate a search party. Fototripper was last seen in the company of someone we now know as "the stalker". If you happen to see someone resembling fototripper, please toss him a tripod so he can defend himself. ;)
I’ve got a big question, I’m looking for a telephoto lens for my a7riii and my sights where on the G master 70-200 obviously because of its fast Aperture and cause I still do event photography and portraits, but I wanted a telephoto for my landscape and moon shoots. Then tamaron launches there 70-180 2.8 , what are your initial thoughts on this new tamaron Lens and are those missing 20mm a deal breaker for those close up landscape shots and moon shots?
I haven't used that lens yet but your decision will be based on cost. The Tamron is a LOT cheaper. I used the 17-35? is it? Anyway, for the price I loved it.
fototripper thanks yea the price does make it a easy decision, i have the 17-28 and 28-75 and I’m very happy with them. Super light weight and sharp the only thing that was holding me back was when it was announced the mentioned it would reach up to 180mm and that’s when I was like “ok I saved some money with those other two lenses maybe I should get the g master now. But looking at the reviews and how everyone seams happy with the results with the new tamaron it got me to think that maybe spending all that money on the g master isn’t such a good idea. Was kind of torn in that decision so thanks for giving me a good slap in the head
I coudn't stop looking at that bag of stuff in the background of the car in the intro. Some kind of pasta or frozen something-or-other. These were great tips, by the way. But seriously, what was in that bag?
You sure that wasn't Amanda growling at being kept out in the cold for hours with no great sunrise light or colour? Oh, and don't take Uncle Grumpy to Mesa Arch, whatever you do: breach of the peace wouldn't begin to describe the results! :-o
Coffee cup on the floor. My girlfriend put her shoes on my dash once. I kicked her out of the car and that was the last time I went out with her. Ya know the saying, Oh what a relief! Ha
Another great video...very good tips that I'll keep in mind on my next trip out. Have you ever thought of bringing a folding camp chair to be more comfortable?
