Father drove OTR 54 years, beginning in the 1940's. When I was young, I would ride with him for weeks straight. I remember feeling so proud sitting in that passenger seat, waving at fellow drivers! I watched everything he did - shifting, backing, slinging iron, talking on the CB, filling out logs. He was always giving pointers, what to do & what not to do. He enjoyed answering my many questions and he LOVED talking about the Good 'Ol Days, comparing things then and now, calling himself a "dying breed" (after a while, I began to enjoy hearing the same stories over and over!!). He gave me my appreciation and fascination of all things nature and geography and was the greatest North America tour guide I have ever known. Every highway, every mountain pass, every remote town had a story attached...."See that over there? This one time, me and.....". Had a memory like a steel trap and/or was an embellishment artiste'. I miss you Dad. You were a Professional Truck Driver personified (pass is called Telephone Canyon btw ;)

When its starting to snow im the first one at the truck stop shutting down ,will never take a chance on snowy roads or icy rain!! I dont care about the load when it comes to my safety
I always crack the windows while running the heat to help....I'm sure you know that. I love the challenge of driving in the cold snow, but you're right about the tension. That's a good thing though. If you were relaxed driving on that stuff, I'd be worried.
Most of the new drivers don't use their CB or don't even have one. They are too busy on their phone. And it isn't just bad weather that they come in handy. If some one looses part of a load or peals a recap off in the middle of the road, it is nice to get some warning before everyone runs up on it at 60 MPH.
Milleniums get offended if u try to be a spotter for them as they back up...go until you hit something.. then stop and get on your cell phone...a week again a millenium sheared off another driver's side mirror...as he started to trade paperwork in Sunnyvale Ca target store...the other driver hit him in his mouth hard enough to loosen several teeth...this is cruel but he will be more careful with other people's property now!

I just went through Amarillo 2 days ago and it was HELL!! Mega winter storm... cars in the ditches and trucks broken down and also in the ditches. Truck stops and all parking was full and guys looking fiercely for parking. I found a spot at their local court house. 8-)
What tips do you have for rookies when it comes to driving in snow and ice. Im finishing up training and then I’ll get my own and i know round this time it’ll be snowing
To not push yourself to far to fast. The first year. Stay out of everyones way. Dont get in any big packs of trucks. Get comfortable with the truck before you dive into snow and ice. When you get scared stop. But always try to get better at it. Believe in your ass. If you feel like it just slides sideways in your seat that means your drives are slipping. Get off the road. Be aware that wind can push a 80 thousand lbs vehicle at a stop. It will push it across the ice at a gust up to 40 mph keep atleast 3 tractor trailer leaths between you and them. We slide a long way if we loose traction. Stay off the brakes. Watch the back of your mirror if it freezes the road is frozen. If you see no tire spray the road is frozen. If your tires get quite the road is frozen. Always remember you are the boss not dispatch. Be safe be profitable and be happy

Lost a brother and an uncle-both were good seasoned truckers- on icy interstates. I get what you are saying but still money ain't everything as their widows and kids will tell you. Uncle had years of experience but jacknifed on the ice one December just before Christmas. Well when you drive on I-80 westbound sometime, and you pass Marker 202 in Nebraska near North Platte close to Brady, if you think of it give my brother Randy a nod. Cocky young trucker going east figured he could do 80+ on ice with an empty trailer. Figured he could pass another semi on an iced bridge. The trucker he was passing said he was gonna kill somebody and got on his CB to try to talk some sense into the dude. But it was too late. The dude was yelling profanities at the other driver on his CB that he knew how to drive his rig as he was trying to merge back over and lost control on the ice. His truck crossed the medium, hitting my brother's truck head-on. Just before crashing, he and my brother briefly made eye contact before all he'll broke loose. It turned into a grisly, ugly multi vehicle situation and I'll spare the gory details except to just say my brother instantly died 5 different ways right in front of the trucker that crashed into him, and who btw walked away unhurt though his wife in the sleeper was a different story. He was found guilty of vehicle homicide. His sentence was to take a defensive driving class! I had a trucker dang near run me off the road one night too. You be careful out there. That young dude's not the only idiot behind wheels. Most are good truckers though, especially seasoned, and a great bunch of people. They deal with a lot of really crazy car drivers too for sure. What people fail to understand is this: Black Ice should really be called "Invisible Ice", just not as catchy I guess. One min. your road can be ideal, next, you hit some wind in the pass, and you're going sideways doing 70. That happened to me driving through Big Timber Montana, it was one of the most frightening things to ever happen to me, because there was just no way out. Rig on the right, behind, in front. When I finally went off the road? It was in a flat, with soft snow. Like I was placed there. The other rigs? Not so lucky. One went into the mountainside, the other two went over the cliff, on the other side. Crazy stuff.
I retired from trucking, I told everyone on CB, that I would be watching them, screwing up from home. Well...here I am, and there you are, screwing up.😮

We got dispatched and loaded in the afternoon so it threw off our regular schedule. He was probably glad that he drove thru the snow and ide instead of me though
Can't say how many times I've made my way from Laramie to Cheyenne and shut down due to the weather. Shut down for 2-3 days waiting for the roads to get cleared.
Because every one has a different degree of skill level and the new guy uselly only truck for 2 years. The font get the skills in the long run to learn but they are the majority
@@truckingreviewchannel Why don't you be honest & tell them that you don't want to get stuck behind a wreck like what just happened on the other side. Looks like someone tried to scoot past YRC Doubles & wrecked as he was coming out of the hammer lane right in front of YRC. YRC had to jackknife to prevent from killing the guy. It will take 2 days to clean that mess up. I stay far behind & away of other drivers during bad weather events. Not much you can do about a tail-gate-r but slow down a little more & maybe they will go around you. I Always end up in the carnage un saved as everyone in front is all smashed to hell & everyone one in the back is all crumpled up too. I usually trudge along as far as I safely can & end up behind a road block. Now for the shitheads behind me all I can do is put my flashers on to warn them of stopped traffic. That usually don't work. I did see a trooper once standing out in a back up. He looked like one of those flag guys on an aircraft carrier, having to jump out of the way as cars & trucks aim at him while they take their turn at wrecking. He was getting a pretty good work out with all the jumping jacks he was doing. He seemed to be good at football too as I watched as he threw his flash light hitting a truck. I love this time of year......

I have a CB but I rarely turn.it on because all you gear is other drivers bitching and complaining. It gets old real fast. I use to enjoy my CB but now I cant stand it because everyone is so damn negative.
I 80 between Laramie an Rawlins in the winter is a death trap . Many people die on this streach an if you travel through here its just a matter of time your playing the odds an there against you .
They need to turn the flashers off it doesn't help it makes tired people think these a problem ahead and cause them to panic I've seen pile ups because people get used to the flashers and when there a crash they don't react until it's too late

Yep.. Was stuck there 32 hours. Then drove 2 hours. 🙄
No fun!!
Be safe y'all... Was wondering where Princess was, thought she drove the night shift?
Some drivers have never had the chance to experience the "joy" of driving in snow or freezing rain (they're virgins).
Bet you're glad you put those new tires on now.
Rock on !😎
We got dispatched and loaded in the afternoon so it threw off our regular schedule. He was probably glad that he drove thru the snow and ide instead of me though
Finally you said something smart
Ya I was broke out there in trucking. But it’s the company and my dispatcher. Ran me only 1900. Miles a week. But that’s. USA trucks for ya
If you have a clean record then go elsewhere. We recommend Crete as a good company.
Plenty of more miles out there driver.
I'm stuck at a loves now. Cheyenne i80 is closed now for 10 hours.
Hope you got rolling!! It sounds like almost all the country is shutting down off and on!
but the uprr is not close down
The pass heading east out of Laramie is Telegraph pass.
Been driving since 05.
Currently sidelined in Rawlins because Wyoming is closed
❄️😄❄️
That paycheck is not worth it if your laid up from a accident.
Can't say how many times I've made my way from Laramie to Cheyenne and shut down due to the weather. Shut down for 2-3 days waiting for the roads to get cleared.
Why can’t you just stay in line and be patient?

You talking about shoulder tension, I think my head just popped watching you go threw Laramie 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I really don't think it's greed as much as necessity to feed family. ...is why we drive through
that hill is known as the summit or sherman hill.its the highest point in all of i-80.also that sign is pronounced vee da voo.real popular rock climbing.
I have to try that!
I have a CB but I rarely turn.it on because all you gear is other drivers bitching and complaining. It gets old real fast. I use to enjoy my CB but now I cant stand it because everyone is so damn negative.
Winter. Coming. I think it’s going be a bad winter this year due to last year wasn’t that bad ! At least here in Virginia it wasn’t
The Farmers Almanac is predicting a bad one this year
Money doesnt mean a damn thing if you're dead FYI!! 14YRS later when it's real bad I'm done driving for the night or day period
14 hrs is all we all have. The days of multiple log books is done more the pity. Now they tell you when to sleep even if you cant sleep
@@truckingreviewchannel true story..by the time you shower unwind watch a movie you got 6hrs left of that 10hr break lol
Put your heater on defrost pull your sun visors down. It helps keep the heat on the windshield.
Elk is no joke!!!!
I 80 between Laramie an Rawlins in the winter is a death trap . Many people die on this streach an if you travel through here its just a matter of time your playing the odds an there against you .
Outstanding
Good God this shit must happen all the time
They need to turn the flashers off it doesn't help it makes tired people think these a problem ahead and cause them to panic I've seen pile ups because people get used to the flashers and when there a crash they don't react until it's too late
It's Veeda-Voo. Don't ask me how they get that but it's how it's said.
This video explains one reason why I gave up trucking after 34 years of it.
