    you're supposed to have the traction control off

  • @archurban
    @archurban 8 лет назад +7

    well, those tires are for all seasons. so it won't work well for off road. here is the problem. you stop in the middle of hill, then try to restart. that doesn't work like I said. you should keep speed all the way from start without stopping. that's what you go up the hill with all season tires.

    I appreciate the honesty of this video with showing the failed uphill attempts instead of simply showing the Sportage's highlight reel.

    its centre differential lock mate.. makes both front and rear wheels spin/ rotate at the same speed

    I'm not sure if the driver has a good handle on the car's systems. Any tricky hill should be attempted with ESP off..... 4WD on.......and a good run-up. From the get-go. Shouldn't even have to think about that.

    +Everyman Driver - that point when you were trying to get up the hill in the soft sand. Maybe try keep it in 4WD and turning TRAC off.... just an idea, its worked for me in some situations to get a bit more wheel spin when I needed it. Keep up the great work.

    • @JohnMayfield-NS
      @JohnMayfield-NS 8 лет назад +1

      +Emeka Ossai I was thinking the same thing. Not sure how KIA's system works, but in general it cuts power to the spinning wheel, doesn't typically keep track of HOW many wheels it's cutting power to. In our JSW it's cut both tires (fwd), and you're going no where. On a snowy side road it gets turned off every time.

    • @maxwhite3981

      Exactly.. the traction control is not going to work well in many off road conditions.. just not designed for that.

    It’s so funny, reading all the comments. It’s not the vehicle’s fault, it’s not the sand, it’s killing me.........poor guy. Yeah, we own this Sweetheart, too. And, has our stamp of approval and we have heavy snow for five months of the year.

    A thought, the sx is a performance minded tune. You have good street tires. You can't expect to off road with street tires, 19 inches with 40psi of air in them...

    I'm a truck guy and like off roaders. Latest off roading gizmos these days were like more icing on a cake for me cause somtimes since there's no way we'll know if it works as advertised. In my 20 years experience off roading, I suggest to turn off the latest gizmos like traction control or ESP and only the 4wd system or lockers if it have is ON.and the engine of course. One more, if you go play soccer, wear football shoes not ball room dancing shoes. In off roading, use the right tire for it

    I've had 3 Kia's over the past few years and recently went from the Kia Sportage to the new 2016 Optima SXL. And what i found out from my 2015 Sportage is they are amazing off road and i know that it can do that hill climb. But for the car to be able to do it is you have to hold the traction control button for 5-8 secs for it to deactivate stabilatrac and traction control system because it will limit what the car will do because in all honesty the manufacture puts too much faith in the traction control then the car itself because the car has the power but as soon as it senses the slip it limits the power and everything and yes you did deactivate the traction but you did not deactivate the stabilitrac i don't belive. that will allow the car to spin the tires with the AWD system still activated. once you do that it will climb that hill with no problem. love your videos tho they are amazing watch them every week!!!!!!!!!!!

      If you need RUclips to tell you to disable traction/stability control to be able to get wheel slip then I suggest reading the owner's manual of any car that has it - they will explain it for you - also when trying to go up a dirt hill, assuming you would like to reach the top, the usual practice is not to come to a complete stop halfway - perhaps this is your preferred method I don't know - please enlighten us on your successes so far...this is a good example of someone ( and I see them in the ditch here every winter ) thinking that AWD allows you to do anything anytime anywhere....if you need more clarification Consumer reports has a decent video explaining what and what not AWD can and will do...

    AWD for this cross over benefits Basic Economy Commute/Four season State. For demo purpose in this segment your gonna need a different type of vehicle. Dont know why you would, but doing heavy off roading with your average family/work/grocery AWD Cross Over is not the best choice to climb sandy rocky hills or any type of rough terrains that defeats the purpose the vehicle. No pun intended, but just because it's AWD we're gonna climb Mt. Kilimanjaro? C'mon man😁

    • @postnick

      The tire. Setup is just wrong for this video.
      Also owning one its great in the snow. Sure it gets a little tail happy under power, but then I know the rear drive works!

  • @jasanmiguel
    @jasanmiguel 8 лет назад

    Dave, I think you'll find that while most of these SUVs have fine mechanical off road features, they will all wear the same Achilles's heel... tires made for soft highway driving and not off road sand and mud forays.

  • @josuehuerta1165
    @josuehuerta1165 6 месяцев назад

    Honest feedback - you’re supposed to turn off the TC, the other thing is, you DO NOT have the proper tires for that type of affronting, regardless of it being light. I have a front wheel drive vehicle that can kill those small inclines, but I have AT tires.

    I would have liked to see you go through that last path using the normal AWD that controls the power to wheels instead of the lock mode. If the intelligent system works right you should not need the lock mode. Also Kia doesn't mention if this SUV has adaptive cruise control. Thanks for the video.

    • @postnick

    Why would you off road with the traction control on? The tires dont really help either. If you want your tires to spin turn off the traction control.

  • @puffnstuff12
    @puffnstuff12 7 лет назад +3

    If you want to climb hills buy a Toyota 4Runner or other real SUV with a part time or full time 4WD system. AWD systems are great for on road low traction situations but don't even begin to approach the usefulness of a real 4WD system.

    • @adamschultz7127
      @adamschultz7127 3 года назад

      Look... I know your comment is three years old... But what's the difference between 4WD and AWD? Everything I see says they're the same. Only Teslas with three motors have the option to supply power to the front axle and two rear wheels. How do combustion engines deliver power to all four wheels in a 4WD system, as you stated? I understand your comment is way past due, I won't be offended if you don't feel the need to reply.

  • @alejandrom1261
    @alejandrom1261 8 лет назад +2

    so it will just stop spinning the tires if it can't go up a hill?

    • @practicalguy973
      @practicalguy973 8 лет назад +1

      It so hard to tell what he was doing with the awd system. I find this review channel aggravating with the hap hazard off-road testing and trying to guess at how the vehicle acts and if in a different mode would it be able to get up the hill? This video makes the Sportage look like it just stops itself and that's it. I hope this is due to the traction control being left on, but maybe it is a limitation of this new awd system. You would think that with traction control off and the 4x4 lock on all the momentum would have carried it up the hill but it looks like the traction control was taking power away and causing it to stop quickly. Really hate all that sensor driven awd BS in cars nowadays. Very gimmicky. My car in the winter under snowy conditions I have to shut traction control off because it will not allow me to accelerate turning through an intersection sometimes it will want to slow the car and that can be super dangerous. That's a trait of traction control though, it can not think that well.

    It always seems like this guy never understands the all wheel drive/four-wheel-drive system of these vehicles and he just does it on the fly hoping for the best. If you’re trying to keep momentum up a steep hill in four wheel lock, you probably want to disengage the all wheel drive system so it doesn’t slow your vehicle down losing momentum up a steep hill as the wheels start to slip.

    2.4 L 180 hp base and lx. /2.0 Liter, Turbocharged Horsepower 240 I hate this fuel economy craze. They're putting in lawn motor engines and slapping on turbo chargers. The car isn't light weight by any stretch of the imagination. It's heavy and bulky and has a boat motion feel at turns.

    • @Maxxlenoxx
      @Maxxlenoxx 8 лет назад

      i don't understand your point... isn't it a good idea to downsize the engine and put a turbo? By doing so, you get fuel economy for daily driving and still decent performance (turbo/torque) when needed.

    • @aky19832001
      @aky19832001 8 лет назад

      Maxxlenoxx It's not a lightweight vehicle. And when I drove this vehicle, real world numbers were below 16 miles to the city. I wasn't driving hard or doing high revs. There was turbo lag ( and the effects of the turbo weren't kicking in until about you hit 4000 rpm on lower gears, which essentially defeats the purpose of the turbo if your needing to have to push the little engines hard.
      The body roll was another issue all together. In the end they still charge premium dollar for a vehicle that isn't premium performance for it's class.
      In actually the manufacture walks away with a bigger payday cause smaller engines are cheaper to make, even with turbos. If they offered true adjustable rugged suspension, gave v6 twin turbo. I can the price they're asking as being justifiable. But for the price and what it offers no.

    • @Maxxlenoxx
      @Maxxlenoxx 8 лет назад

      I haven't tried the new Sportage yet. But I still think it's a good idea for manufacturers to downsize the engines and put a turbo. They just need to find a good balance between the engine and the chassis. Hyundai did a really good job with the Tucson 1.6T DCT (195 lb-ft @ 1500RPM). Nice combinaison of fuel economy (23mpg city/30mpg highway) and performance (0-60mph/7.5s).

      Mazda CX5, it looks way better than any Korean,Japanese car inside and out, has amazing technology,fuel economy, and only it and the Volkswagen Tiguan feel like sporty cars not mini vans.

    Wow.....not impressive. And tires really aren't appropriate for an all-wheel-drive suv. I was expecting alot more from the new Sportage.... :(

    Hehehe Amateur! You wouldn't last through one icy New England winter :) Traction control is for Road driving, and not Off Road driving.

      Those tires weren't helping you either. I wouldn't think of leaving pavement in those tires.

    Looks like even with traction control off very little power is going to the wheels. Not sure what is wrong with that Sportage but I hope Kia doesn't set them all up that way or you won't be able to go anywhere offroad! Terrible offroad ability!

    Dude learn how to drive, I thought you were drunk. As far as the argument of off roading reviews it's great because there is a big market for hikers,campers and outdoors person will want an all terrain suv to get them there. Not a Dave hater this just wasn't one of my favorites when I saw it was a KIA I didn't get my hopes up :)

      Except my 2013 Sportage has yet to be defeated by a hill, deep mud, or snow. So I'd have to say that they're more capable than you think. The one in the video likely has tires that are unable to handle climbing up anytime but a dry hill. When I got new tires with teeth on mine, Hills were almost effortless. Additionally, it's important to turn of the traction control when climbing.

    • @NYRangers911
      @NYRangers911 8 лет назад

      +Jordan Jolley I just don't think anyone thinks off road capability. I do know that tires make a huge difference and that traction should be turned off, hence why I said "learn" how to drive. My Land Rover Discovery Sport would have been up that hill in 2 seconds.

    • @jordanjolley1
      @jordanjolley1 8 лет назад

      +NYRangers911 your Land Rover is engineered specifically for off-roading hence the name. However, even with the wrong tires your Land Rover will struggle in many situations.
