    Great idea . I’ll glue mine to the removable tray. My friend came up with that idea.

    Thanks for the idea Brenda. Just one observation - carrying water to the palette on a brush is slow and inefficient, I use a small plastic pipette which carries more water and keeps the water clean.

    Thanks so much Brenda, this is really helpful! I love the heritage palettes because they are so lightweight, and easily transportable...but this idea just made them even better!
    TFS!

    Thanks so much for this tip. Those little triangle thingies are so inexpensive for a bunch and I have added them to my palette on the clear tray ( that was first scrubbed with an abrasive side of a kitchen sponge to diminish beading) that sits on a white piece of paper and also on a white ceramic tile I also use for mixing. A couple tips to share with you: the larger size white ceramic tile I use is a perfect inexpensive mixing surface that does not bead up. And those stains on the plastic are easily removed using an eraser used for graphite, a tip from a couple other YT videos , works even better than Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I have used both my prismacolor Magic Rub as well as a generic white plastic eraser, both work great.

    I love modifying my palettes to suit my needs better! I’ve modified almost every palette I have ever owned. Marie’s 48 pan set, Jerry Q 24 set(bought for the palette itself mainly) a 24half pan folding tin(the common type with 2 fold outs) allowing the pan tray inside to clip on the side freeing up ALL mixing space even can be held by thumb ring that way it’s awesome. Recently I’ve been modifying the W&N Field Box to not only hold more half pans but also to have more mixing trays if needed. My current plan will offer me 30half pans and an additional mixing space all within the original form factor. Can’t wait to share how I did it!!

    Brenda, thanks for sharing these two amazing tips. The tube holder/organizer is genius! I can see how it'd be quick & easy to find the color tube you need in a plein aire box. :)

    Brenda. I have that same water color palatte and the little tray is a lid to put over the same side it is on to keep any wet paints from getting in your pans when you close it up. I have been trying to figure it our for awhile and when I was watching you I suddenly had a thought about it and I was correct. wow, LOL Thanks for the idea for the pans.

    Wow this is a great idea! I also tried something with my clear plastic trays. I spray painted them white with Krylon Fusion Plastic Spray paint since I had some on hand. Now I have extra mixing trays if needed.

    I just use the clear plastic to hold my swatch card in place for the paints. Then use it for mixing on top if I need to since the back is white. Great MacGyvering from you, Mrs. Swenson!

    Great idea!! As a beginner watercolorist, I find the large mixing space to be too small--my paint usually spreads farther in a space like that, but if I had a lot of little trays in it--now that might work! Thank you for the great idea!!

    What a great solution!!! Also I make a color template that i keep under the clear tray. i would glue the wells on top of it. :)

      Katherine, I don't think the lid will close if you glue trays on top...check first.

    Great idea, I've had one of those palettes for years and haven't used it. With that adjustment, maybe I will. I like plein air, I also fund that palette not handy because too big to hold and no finger hook.

    • @brendaswensonwatercolors
      @brendaswensonwatercolors  7 лет назад +3

      You're so right. I also paint plein air and trying to hold the palette is no fun.
      I didn't show the bottom of the palette... but I also added an O-ring for a thumb ring. I attached it an industrial cloth tape. The O-ring is rubber and flexible and won't cut into your finger or thumb.

    As others have written here, I also thought that perhaps the clear plastic tray could be turned upside down prior to closing this up, to "seal" in each color in its little space for travel. Well, I recently took this palette on a trip (first time ever I painted outside of my home!) and the paints were not fully dry. 2 of them slid out of their little wells and made a mess in the center area. Even with that clear plastic tray in place, the front edge along the upper part of the "ramp" in each well is lower than the dividing sides, if this makes sense, so paint can still spill out. If only the manufacturer had thought about this just a step beyond ... So for me, note to self - never carry this in any orientation other than flat at the bottom of my bag! :-)

    • @brendaswensonwatercolors
      @brendaswensonwatercolors  7 лет назад

      Unfortunately there is no way to keep wet paint from sliding out of wells in any palette. I always keep my palettes flat when transported.

    The clear insert is for use with highly staining pigments. Yours looks fairly pristine but I've had them get so stained you couldn't see the true color being mixed. I don't use plastic at all anymore for that reason.. just porcelain.

    • @brendaswensonwatercolors
      @brendaswensonwatercolors  7 лет назад

      Pat, I've never used the clear tray for mixing...I don't like how the paint beads up. I agree porcelain is nice, but not realistic for working outdoors and travel.

    • @EstrafaDC
      @EstrafaDC 7 лет назад +1

      I thought the clear tray was basically a cover to separate the large mixing area from your paints. That way if you're outdoors and have wet mixed paints on one side, when you close the palette the mixed areas won't contaminate your paint wells on the other site. Also, the clear tray is easier to clean up once you get to a sink.

    • @GwynethSleuth
      @GwynethSleuth 7 лет назад

      Estrafalario that's exactly what I thought the clear palette was for, in case paints are wet when you close it, the paints won't mix.

    Brenda, I think the modification of the palette with the 3 bead trays is brilliant! But I was wondering "why not glue them in the clear plastic tray that comes out and leave the big mixing area free to do just that--mix"? I tried that with my palette and it works just fine and I have not lost the usefulness of the clear plastic tray.

    • @brendaswensonwatercolors
      @brendaswensonwatercolors  7 лет назад

      Cynthia, The clear plastic tray is made with a plastic that does not allow paint to spread out and mix. It beads up terribly. Not useful for the way I paint which is more wet and painterly. I'm glad it works for you and your approach to painting.

  • @GwynethSleuth
    @GwynethSleuth 7 лет назад

    The clear tray probably keeps wet paint from dripping onto the other side if you have to pack up before they all dry.
