The best part of that counter attack goal was how Gilardino could have easily been selfish and tried to curl a shot himself, as he was in a good position outside the box to do so... instead, completely blind, but fully aware that Del Piero was behind him, he slips that perfect pass for Del Piero to cooly put in the top corner. Absolutely selfless play by Gilardino, and a perfect finish... Oh yeah, Cannavaro initiating that attack was also incredible...
that italian team was pure magic. There was no selfishness among them, they surpassed germany and france with pure heart, what a squad. Most of the times the best team lift the trophy, not in 2006. They had of course an amazing team but not better than germany or france in my opinion

In 1990-1994-1998 the Italian team was always the best one but had bad luck (yep, always out at the pens). In 2002 wc was also the best team but the matches were clearly sold. Too much injustice against the Italian team. They were so upset that they built a strong group of friends not only colleagues, who shared a common goal and fate. Gilardino knew Del Piero was there and that he had better chances of scoring, cause that was the Del Piero's zone. Team players.
He is happy today to see his goal being recreated again after 18 years by a player from his very own country. The emotions are same. Life is really like a Football Game. It comes back in a circle ❤

Also, great releases for Italy to attack again (to avoid a penalty shootout). In this clip, Totti was already high-strung after flinging a bottle into the crowd after Grosso's goal. :) A clinical finish by Del Piero. Always a gentlemanly player, he deserved this moment. And to think that Totti was involved in this counter-attck makes it even more memorable. Finally, kudos to this resilient Italian team to play such an intense Final Match after such an energy sapping semi-final. Deserving champions in 2006.

That's maybe why the brasilian and italian tradition can't play a part anymore on that sad stage that is football today. I still remember one of the best matches ever: Italy - Brasil 1997 (3-3). Just perfection, a real game with exceptional ballers.😢 One of the best in history, now is only a memory.

It was clear from the latter stages of the quarterfinal that he was carrying an injury, and as the semifinal wore on he was being more and more a passenger, particularly againsta midfield consisting of Totti and Pirlo. I guess Klinsmann thought his team would take the match to penalties, with Ballack being a guaranteed penalty taker.
