      @@mackdiesel8292 are you talking about the thick rubber piece on top of the airbox that has the wire that goes to the MAF? Not sure either... kinda looks permanent, but maybe once you disconnect the MAF wire tou can push the rubber seal thing out?

    Update, got everything installed, used the electrical tape trick you mentioned in the comments and wow, what an improvement. To be fair, the air filter filter that the previous owner had in was very dirty and really needed a change, but the turbo response is very noticeable and the spike of pressure are much higher. Thanks a ton! Sounds AMAZING too.
    EDIT: For the cold air intake, there are plastic clips holding the bottom piece on to the top piece. I just remove the entire bottom piece and it sits directly above the air filters. Air intake temperature raised only a little while driving, though a decent amount while idle, not that it matters much considering it's getting heated and compressed by the turbo anyway. Looking into mounting the stock heat shield as well. Looking forward to your update!

    Lol. I remember when I had my catalytic converter still. It really cools down that side of the engine bay when you put a test pipe on. I also wrapped my 3" test pipe with exhaust wrap. Best mod other than my GIAC stage 1. Test pipe+wrap=$90 on eBay. Scrap yard gave me $35 for my cat con so only cost me 55. Is it a lot of work to get that test pipe on?? You bet your ass it is. I must admit it sounds great, But the turbo flutter sounds like the Diverter Valve is toast. I Know its not a new Video. The Flutter apears, when the pressure is coming back thru the turbo, when the throttle is closed. This puts Stress on the Compressor. It should sound like i whosh, when the Diverter is good. Cause the Excess Air is pushed in front of the turbo to recirculate.

    What did you do so it sound that good when you hit gas? Is it oboy the air intake?

  • @MarshalBeard
    @MarshalBeard 7 лет назад +1

    Hello again, just want to run some ideas by you quickly. Not sure if you're aware or not, but since your car's turbo is running stock like mine, that turbo fluttering noise when you let off the gas is 99% of the time a symptom of having a broken diverter valve. If you know what compression surges and what the DV does and all that you can skip my wall of text here explaining how all that works and all the bad that comes with it.
    I had discovered mine was broken while diagnosing a boost leak causing poor acceleration and fuel economy, and since replacing it with an OEM upgrade to the DV used in the Audi TT 225 which is more durable and can handle more turbo boost, my performance, responsiveness and gas mileage is back and no more flutter even though it sounded kind of cool, although the nice subtle and refined whoooosh is a lot more satisfying knowing my car is okay now. The purpose of the DV is to recirculate any excess boost back into your turbo intake AFTER you let off the gas. Your car's ECU is programmed to work with the MAF and DV recirculating air when it's supposed to, in order to adjust accordingly for best efficiency and performance. When this has failed, boost pressure is constantly leaking through the DV straight back into your intake, meaning a large amount of it is basically just going around in a circle being re-compressed rather than being forced into your engine, which results in a compression surge which is the turbo flutter noise. This basically means that the DV is causing too much unused boost when you close the throttle which forces it backwards out of your turbo. This can cause seriously unwanted wear on your turbo if it's getting old, which it likely is around the time the DV dies many times. You may also get a CEL for a lean or rich code here and there, but its not common because the ECU is usually able to adjust enough for the lack of boost to not throw any codes and operate "normally". Many times if you slam jam the throttle a couple times the computer can't adjust quickly enough and your ECU will log the fault but not turn on the check engine light, which is kind of stupid. I can only imagine how long the previous owner of my car was driving it like this. If you do a quick search on how to tell if your DV is broken it's super easy to check.
    This one is a lot shorter I promise. I'm not sure if you've progressed with the air intake duct modification, but incase you haven't noticed, the entire bottom piece of the air duct that connects to the stock airbox is just held on by plastic clips holding the top and bottom pieces together. You can easily work around it and pop the tabs, and reassemble by just snapping it back together. Nice quick reversable and free solution. Still looking forward to your follow up video!
    And finally, another big thanks for this video, taking interest in this mod influenced me to learn so much more about german cars and turbo cars in general, resulting in some much needed fixes to problems I didn't even know existed. And now I've just finished reprogramming/customizing my car and re-calibrating the throttle body after a needed clean with VAG-COM, which was just another thing I was clueless about prior. It's been a great learning experience and a lot of fun and it all stemmed from this video. Best of luck to you and your car, and I apologize for having too much time on my hands!

    • @spraym88
      @spraym88  7 лет назад +1

      Marshal Beard I appreciate your input on my video. I actually upgraded my diverter valve to a forge diverter valve. the car runs fantastic although even with the stock diverter valve it ran fantastic no issues. no check engine lights. no hesitation whatsoever... and I'm not looking for someone who can readjust my throttle body through VAG-COM... since I unplugged it and removed it to do a thermostat housing and J plug upgrade. thanks again for checking out the video

    • @MarshalBeard
      @MarshalBeard 7 лет назад +1

      That's good to hear. I'm not sure where you're located, but up here in Canada we have kijiji which is basically craigslist. There are tons of people close by offering to swing by and do things like a TBA for only 20$, maybe you'll find some luck there. Alternatively, you could purchase a 3rd party cable and use the older included 409.11 vag-com which can perform every modification possible on our cars, although it can be difficult to get working but it's only 10$ vs a few hundred. If you decide to go that route I could help you out getting it setup. Good luck!

      Honest answer: No sir, you’ll have to look into more expensive things like your ecu, injectors, turbo, etc.
      If you want to do it anyway because it makes you happy: go for it. I did a similar DIY with K&N filters for $60 CAD. It’s ratchet and probably cost me -0.5hp but I love it

    Ok i have actualy done this about a week ago. Here is my guide to help you out.
    Am driving Audi A4 B7 1.8T Quattro now the fluttering sound he gets form turbo if am not mistaken i probably am ( not a car expert so bare with me) is Turbo Compressor Surge. Basically That fluttering noise is the sound of a turbo operating in compressor surge, as the compressor “chops” through the air rather than pushing the air into the engine. SO that noise is not good for the turbo.
    What i got is like a BOV sound which is great and still satisfying. Is this beneficial? I would say yes because it helps your car breath better imo other people would disagree. I will get my Car REmap in next couple of weeks. So I've spent for the air filter and breather filter around €70 including shipping.
    Now am using 3inch in diameter Cone air filter and 25mm in diameter breather filter. How ever i have adapter in place so i can fit mine on. I would recommend a Cone filter that has 2.5 inch in diameter so you can attach it to your MAF sensor. Breather filter i went with 25mm because i wasn't sure the right size so i just wing it. I used boiling hot water to loosen the rubber and it fit on nicely. you could try and get a bigger breather filter but i didn't bother because this method worked for me.
    Heat shield: As you remove your front box ( the front part to which maf sensor is connected to and your heat shield is on) and the back box which is connected near the fender of your car. So what i did is this remove the maf sensor from the box then remove the heat shield (TRY AND DO THIS WHILE ENGINE IS COLD- so you don't hit your fingers on hot surfaces) then remove the screws which holds the pipe to the box then as you have your heat shield taken off and your pipe which is on your box connected isn't anymore you can safely remove the top part. PS there are two screws that holds the top box and bottom box together easy to find not hard to miss. SO as you removed the top part of your box you are left with bottom part which is connected to the side near the fender of your car and also tapping screws on the bottom.... all you do is push the box outwards from the fender side to remove and then you pull the bottom box out to remove it completely.
    **** Now the way i done this is saw off one of the taps which are at the bottom of the back box which connected to the car to hold it in place i simply took one out with a saw and left other on on the box just in case i wanna reattach the original air box for what ever reason. I used the hammer on the Heat shield to bend it down and it is hard for me to explain which part but if you look in the video the curved part he has on top i bent it down so that i can drill a hole in it the same size as the self tapping screw and i can easily put the heat shield on secured in place and also tilt it more to turbo side and it actually gives a great coverage in my opinion.
    If u are unsure about anything i said or wanna correct me if am wrong plz do. Am just novice at this :).

    • @MarshalBeard
      @MarshalBeard 7 лет назад +1

      Hi, I just made a ridiculously long comment explaining this after discovering my mentality previously shared with Spraym was incorrect. Sort by recent comments it'll be right at the top if you want mroe info. Basically, your diverter valve may be broken, meaning it is constantly recirculating air back into the turbo. It is only supposed to do this when your engine stops demanding boost as your turbo spools down, but since already compressed air is being recompressed the entire accleration, this results and excess and unused boost when you let off the gas, forcing boost backwards through your turbo making the "Blah blah blah" sound which can be potentially harmful if your turbo isn't in the best shape. Normally this isn't damaging to your turbo, as very highly boosted cars do this all the time from the massive amount of boost they create almost always leaving an excess unless you have diverter/blow off valves setup, but those turbos are built better and typically don't have worn shafts causing unwanted shifting of the blades which can be affected by air going backwards through your turbo. Typically what's more important is the performance and fuel efficiency you're losing by dumping all that boost back into your turbo in a circle. What you're supposed to hear is a subtle whoosh when that air is released back into your turbo intake, but not the loud PPPSSSHHHHHHH from blow off valves that just dump it into the atmosphere, or turbo farts from excessive boost which the 3 of us used to have. DIverter valves fail pretty often in these cars but are a pretty cheap replacement even from the stealership. Consider upgrading to the Audi TT's diverter valve, is can withstand higher boost and will last longer and be able to handle a Stage 1+ tune much better. Alternatively, Proffesional Parts Sweden makes a 3rd party diverter valve for turbo volvos that is physically identical to the factory DV from audi and VW while performing closer to the upgraded Audi TT one for only 20$, and you can buy them online for a couple bucks in shipping on top of that instead of near 100$. I ran it temporarily waiting for the dealership to order OEM part, as my step father is a mechanic and had one laying around brand new and it fit and functioned perfectly, all hose connections identical in size and placement. Strangely I haven't seen a single post on forums about anyone using this part on a VW/Audi, surprising considering it's an upgrade for 1/4 the cost of the original part.

      Sean Colon the bottom of the air box there are rubber grommets holding it in place! you have to pull up on it

      Thank you. I was able to get everything taken out and the filter put in place. This plus the stage 1 that I have in the car make a great combination.. As far as everyone online saying that its a bad idea because of Heat.. I run my app to monitor everything in the car and my intake temp is 4 degrees cooler then it was with the stock air box even after a 90 mile trip.

      Javier Gevara my diverter valve is stock. and its in the stock location.. I did not modify my diverter valve nor did I change it all I did was put a pod filter on so maybe your diverter valve is defective
