I never really thought of it as disinterest look when I've watched it. I think it really depends on the viewer and what emotions that they are going through. For me, I saw them as a very calm force with their vocals guiding my eyes on the screen. When I think back to it, I can't help but think of it as a calming ocean wave when you're alone on the beach on a semi-cold day. They're calming, soft and it's as if I was left in a dark alleyway when their soft, comforting presence came by and 'guided me home'.
Yes and it's definitely their style, when they go with soft concepts. I remember watching them perform "Your eyes tell" and someone in the comments said, that Tae seemed unwell, because of his arm placed in front of his body, when this was probably a deliberate decision to appear vulnerable because it suits the tone. Even if they were bored they wouldn't show it. I believe they are just "in character" on stage.
I can see how their affect could be interpreted as disinterest, but I chose to view their intended vibe as portraying the intense sadness and dealing with the frustrations of an entire year of living through the Pandemic.
Responding to your comment about being disinterested, I think that might be the style/habit from performing in Korea? I feel like a lot of Kpop singers take on more “meditative” or calm expressions when performing sad songs (even really downright depressing ones), while American/Anglophone singers tend to be more strongly emotive. Probably just a generalization though
I agree. I didn't feel they were disinterested. I think they were being pensive. The length of that instrumental section made it a little awkward, but I think they did a good job. Think of the lyrics. Any other facial expressions would have not matched the song.
Yes, it's true. They put their heart to that sad song. They love that music that's why their faces shows emotions like that. You don't want to show smiling faces when you are singing sad song. Don't use the word "disinterested" because BTS are great when they sing sad song they show their emotion. When the music is happy of course they will show their happy faces.
I don’t see or think they’re disinterested like you said they are very intentional with their performances and what looks like disinterest to you I think it was them trying to show more of a somber emotion
I agree with your opinion about accents, people often expect a foreigner to try their best to imitate an American accent while singing a song in English, but that expectation is kinda boring and based on wanting them to accommodate to your own comfort. Most Italians who have albums in Spanish don't try to hide their Italian accent, and it's very charming.
It depends. Some genres are more forgiving to foreign accents like rock for example. The Sex Pistols sang Frank Sinatra's "My Way" in a Cockney English accent and it works because it was punk rock but if it was done as a jazz standard it would have sounded comical. Blur and Oasis are both English bands singing with a working class English accent (Blur sings in Cockney while Oasis in Manchunian accent)...and it works. Klaus Meine from the German rock band Scorpions has a noticeable German accent when he sings and it still works. Now imagine this...a Chinese singing country in a very noticeable Chinese accent or sings jazz standards....you'd roll on the floor laughing! Honestly.
@@histfictfan4460 The Mongolian Cowboy sang country with an American country accent....unblemished and spot on American accent.....I'm talking about people singing with a FOREIGN accent and singing country or jazz....try to keep up....."countly loads....take me home...." @@fernandaespinosa7365 I don’t know why I can’t share the article link here, so I just paste some phrases for the reference “On February 24, a Japanese classical opera singer known as @rosenduft3 from Twitter wrote a detailed analysis on how she was mesmerized by Jimin's vocals in "Fix You" performed by BTS during MTV Unplugged on the same day. “ “My ears were glued to this part of Jimin's singing, "could it be worse," where the pitch goes up at the "worse" part. It is natural for a voice to become louder as the pitch increases. Therefore, it is difficult to reduce the volume in inverse proportion to the increase in pitch, as Jimin did here. Jimin sang very carefully, taking great care to get the high notes into a good position. The volume is gradually reduced to a smooth legato while moving towards the high notes. His voice is very soft and beautiful despite the tension. It is very difficult to reduce the volume while maintaining the sound quality, and to reach the high notes with a smooth legato, but Jimin did it so great.”

I think they wanted to keep a somber mood for the performance based on the lyrics as well as the context behind the song. BTS are very intentional with everything so I’m sure they did research before as well as coordinated how they wanted their facials to look for the performance. Also since the song isn’t in their native language since it’s translated they would know the song is for Chris martins wife when her father died and it has sad origins so I think they probably thought it would be disrespectful to seem to upbeat and charismatic for the video. Also I had a feeling you would do this reaction so I was happy to see this in my recommendation
Yes, I totally agree, I took it as them being respectful to this great Coldplay song that so many hold dear. BTS did an amazing job with this performance!
I really appreciate you speaking to how having an accent when not singing in your native or first language is okay! It’s hard to admit, but that discomfort we native English speakers may have in listening to accents could actually be a bit of Xenophobia at play. Thx Sam 🙏 😊 ✌🏽
i kinda get what you mean by disinterest in some performances with some members but i really like the story telling of jimin in both his facial expressions and in the vocal quality of his sound.
Hey Sam! I didn’t see them as disinterested, I saw them just as relaxed and making the song the main focus. We know BTS are great performers, dancers and such and so I felt they were laid back and like letting the song take the focus and not anything they were doing. Like it was all about the song and lyrics. Love your channel!
⚠️Wow! You finally remembered the name of the person you have always liked without knowing or recognising him. JIMIN!! I would say you’re wrong on the disinterest looks. Jimin had stated that Fix You has helped them get through things so it has meaning to them as a group. I really don’t think they would sing a song they don’t relate to. All their songs has meaning to them, so I’m pretty sure if they do a cover song these days, it wouldn’t be just any song.
5:36 I noticed that you got really emotional at this part which shows that this song means a lot to you, and I don't blame you because this song is so touching and beautiful. When I listen to it I feel like I'm in a whole another world
Jimins vocal skills are actually insane and he's still improving himself, every time he's experimenting with some new techniques and he sounds so confident in his range. I'm scared of what he could do with his own solo album on his terms.
You love jimin, why dont you try to check out his solos 😁 you dont have to react to it, just enjoy it! Personally i love all of his solos but Lie is my fav 😘
Im actually going to add on your disinterested comment, I kinda caught what you meant by that but I think it was a mixture of the song being sad and just them not being able to perform for so long. They thrive in concerts and everything they've done im the past year has been small with only a camera infront of them. Makes me think the story they were telling was also for them
I think they were just getting in the mood of the song that is rather serious, bc watching their tiny desk performance you can see them all standing up, dancing and just having fun even tho it was siting performance, but with this one it's not really much they could do. for me they were in this melancholic head space. you can also watch their other mtv unplugged performances, they were definitely lighter
Honestly there is something about Jimins voice that makes me smile when I hear it 🤗 His tone is so unique, I love hearing them in this sort of settings…where their vocals can shine Congrats to Jin as well! His power and range is amazing, loved the belt he did at the end. The guys really show that hard work and practice pay off 👏🏼
The feeling I got from this performance was that being such a meaningful song for so many people and for the authors themselves, BTS wanted to perform it in the most respectful way possible.
To those of us who know their facial expressions, they don't look disinterested at all. They look contemplative, melancholy, sad. Anything more would be forced really.
i think rather than disinterest it’s more about them being in the zone. they’re usually people who put a lot of emphasis on visual performance but I think this was more of a raw vocal focused cover where they tried to not overpower the song with excessive expressions, in a way it made it a bit more intimate cause it seemed like they were singing as if nobody’s watching which in my opinion aligns with the intimacy of a song like fix you.
nice to hear such a specific and highly professional breakdown of the vocal applications in this performance! wow! i do have a theory on the tone set by the very particular stage presence of the group here. yes. every aspect of their work is intentional. i believe this performance was tailored to be a kind of calling card to chris martin, the lead singer of coldplay. i believe they wanted to demonstrate their strong vocal abilities without the distraction of flashy dance moves, or other things that may seem less relatable to the coldplay brand. and they had total success, because they collaborated with coldplay on the song, ‘my universe’. mission accomplished. i’m sure their management team realize the collaboration would have been a harder sell if they shot a video for ‘fix you’ with the same production structure as say, ‘butter’. right…? look at the coldplay video for ‘yellow’. although it was shot under very extreme circumstances, the video has the usual coldplayesque function of using the visuals just enough to bring more focus to their superb music. and so, in conclusion, etcetera, and so on. simple bts video wins the day. & everyone involved threw an extra ten million on the barbie. ❤🎶
i think they are just really feeling the song. Jin has had this song on his spotify playlist for years. He loves this song. They just wanted to do it justice and its beautiful.
you always have such balanced critique for performances, and I always enjoy watching your videos. But this one felt special to watch the music really impact you while you were listening. It is evident that you love music, and singing, and that you connect to it in a very real way. Thank you for always being so empathetic and patient with your criticism, your voice students must be very lucky.
Since BTS said this song helped them through tough times, I think I see their expressions as more of an "everything will be alright" than disinterest :) 💜
i think they perform it like that to give solemn vibe, to make it look/sound intimate. personally i like it that they do this once in a while, so the audience focus on their voices and the message of the song without being distracted by flashy dance choreography cute facial expressions
I'm really happy you reacted to this, thank you so much. You're great, I always love to hear what you've goth say. Now that you say it it's true that they seem a little des interested, I see it as maybe introspection you know, it looks sort of intimate
I think they were representing the feelings of the past 2020, it looked pretty somber and calm, they were trying to soothe rather than to make people sad
they always get in ‘the mood’ of the song they are performing, that’s what i get from the performances i’ve watched from them since last year, this kinda show me like some nostalgia since they can’t perform in front of an audience and also they same way their fans haven’t seen them
Disinterest? No... I definitely don't read it as that. Hmm how would I describe it... introspective maybe? Thoughtful, calm, melancholic, reflective... yeah something like that. To me, it fits the song and what they wanted to convey perfectly.
hearing you talk about how certain singers will just be louder the higher the note is SO reassuring 🥺 i was made fun of for how loud i sometimes sing (i’m an alto lol) and been super insecure about it ever since because i thought you weren’t supposed to get loud when singing high...so idk that was just super cool to hear you mention it!!! 😊
sam thank u so much for sharing the way u acknowledge and continue to come to terms w the fact that we cannot all necessarily sound the way we wish and sound like our idols. i’m only just starting to accept that and it IS hard! but u made me feel less alone in that so thank u.
I've been waiting for this video! I would've loved it if you included some points about Jin but overall I really enjoyed the video! Please do more videos on BTS in the future, I love hearing your point of view always 💜
As a huge beach boys fan who loves vocal harmonies and that doo wop style I dig this performance and you gotta respect that they are killing it in what isnt their first language.
I read there presentation of this story as coming from a place inside of them where they are deeply sensitive and aware of the suffering and they are trying to hold a space of calm so the healing process will Fix You.
I wanted to see your opinion on Jin's belting.. And it wasn't there 😔 Thank you for the giving us loads of info again 💜 I immediately smiled when Jk sang and you paused it right away and had tons to say. Idk why some parts are left but I guess there are no opinion about them.
I understand why you interpreted their performance's feeling as disinterest but for me when they released this cover I was quite having a hard time personally that when I was watching the video I didn't realize my tears are already falling. Like you know that feeling when that one friend comforts you just by staying with you without saying a word, some people might view that as disinterest, but for me, it's a non-verbal way to make you feel less lonely and feel understood. It's a feeling that they're not trying to feel the same feelings you feel but they are ready to listen and be with you until you're okay.
i really wanna see your reaction to Lie from Jimin, because is a masterpiece and doesn't sound like kpop at all! and i really appreciate your analysis, i always learn a lot. thanks

Honestly there is something about Jimins voice that makes me smile when I hear it 🤗
His tone is so unique, I love hearing them in this sort of settings…where their vocals can shine
Congrats to Jin as well! His power and range is amazing, loved the belt he did at the end.
The guys really show that hard work and practice pay off 👏🏼
The feeling I got from this performance was that being such a meaningful song for so many people and for the authors themselves, BTS wanted to perform it in the most respectful way possible.
As soon as you said the word "disinterest," I immediately agreed. I was trying to find the word when you said it.
To those of us who know their facial expressions, they don't look disinterested at all. They look contemplative, melancholy, sad. Anything more would be forced really.
i couldn’t have said this better
EXACTLY!! You expressed my exact thoughts that I tried but failed to do.
i think rather than disinterest it’s more about them being in the zone. they’re usually people who put a lot of emphasis on visual performance but I think this was more of a raw vocal focused cover where they tried to not overpower the song with excessive expressions, in a way it made it a bit more intimate cause it seemed like they were singing as if nobody’s watching which in my opinion aligns with the intimacy of a song like fix you.
nice to hear such a specific and highly professional breakdown of the vocal applications in this performance! wow!
i do have a theory on the tone set by the very particular stage presence of the group here. yes. every aspect of their work is intentional. i believe this performance was tailored to be a kind of calling card to chris martin, the lead singer of coldplay. i believe they wanted to demonstrate their strong vocal abilities without the distraction of flashy dance moves, or other things that may seem less relatable to the coldplay brand. and they had total success, because they collaborated with coldplay on the song, ‘my universe’. mission accomplished. i’m sure their management team realize the collaboration would have been a harder sell if they shot a video for ‘fix you’ with the same production structure as say, ‘butter’. right…? look at the coldplay video for ‘yellow’. although it was shot under very extreme circumstances, the video has the usual coldplayesque function of using the visuals just enough to bring more focus to their superb music.
and so, in conclusion, etcetera, and so on. simple bts video wins the day. & everyone involved threw an extra ten million on the barbie. ❤🎶
i think they are just really feeling the song. Jin has had this song on his spotify playlist for years. He loves this song. They just wanted to do it justice and its beautiful.
Yes that’s Jimin he has the highest voice out of bts 😭
But Jin is the highest when it comes to chest voice
@@caracasaaronmarkc.6072 jimin and jin. Jin pushes a lot his high to jimin they come in a natural way and in more light tone.
Jin has the highest belt. Dumb
@@jinislove6689 yes
@@jinislove6689 Not only ur bias😑Jm is the one who sing highest note in bts as lead jin too can sing that doesn't mean u can discrediting jm..jm anti🤢
Jimin’s voice is really good ❤️
you always have such balanced critique for performances, and I always enjoy watching your videos.
I teared up after seeing you getting emotional Sam 🥺 thank you for always being genuine and so sweet when you react to the boys 🤗🤗
I always love your unbiased reviews
Thank you for this, Sam. I cant really sing but I always enjoy your insight!
I'm really happy you reacted to this, thank you so much. You're great, I always love to hear what you've goth say.
Now that you say it it's true that they seem a little des interested, I see it as maybe introspection you know, it looks sort of intimate
You Love Jimin 😭💖
Jimin best singer of kpop
JIN The best
I think they were representing the feelings of the past 2020, it looked pretty somber and calm, they were trying to soothe rather than to make people sad
they always get in ‘the mood’ of the song they are performing, that’s what i get from the performances i’ve watched from them since last year, this kinda show me like some nostalgia since they can’t perform in front of an audience and also they same way their fans haven’t seen them
Jimin ❤️❤️❤️
Favorite time of day. When sam uploads. :)
Disinterest? No... I definitely don't read it as that. Hmm how would I describe it... introspective maybe? Thoughtful, calm, melancholic, reflective... yeah something like that. To me, it fits the song and what they wanted to convey perfectly.
I love how you express everything of what's going on. It's like I'm having a free voice lesson. 😸
I think it's not a lack of interest but their way to express to be meaningful and seriously.
Jimin's magic voice :)
hearing you talk about how certain singers will just be louder the higher the note is SO reassuring 🥺 i was made fun of for how loud i sometimes sing (i’m an alto lol) and been super insecure about it ever since because i thought you weren’t supposed to get loud when singing high...so idk that was just super cool to hear you mention it!!! 😊
Aw man he skipped Jins high note and 3 part harmony 🥺
Finally a channel that doesn't over react. He's not afraid of what he's saying and that's a plus!
sam thank u so much for sharing the way u acknowledge and continue to come to terms w the fact that we cannot all necessarily sound the way we wish and sound like our idols. i’m only just starting to accept that and it IS hard! but u made me feel less alone in that so thank u.
*THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE 3RAPPERS AND 4VOCALIST but this performance we have BTS 7VOCALIST 💜*
And it wasn't there 😔
Thank you for the giving us loads of info again 💜
I immediately smiled when Jk sang and you paused it right away and had tons to say.
I read somber. Loved your insights as always.
Every vocal coach like jimin❤️
I just love this channel - the way you explain things makes sense to me - you do an amazing job 😀
i really wanna see your reaction to Lie from Jimin, because is a masterpiece and doesn't sound like kpop at all! and i really appreciate your analysis, i always learn a lot. thanks
3:47 It depends (on the song, genre and person singing). Honestly.
