I never really thought of it as disinterest look when I've watched it. I think it really depends on the viewer and what emotions that they are going through. For me, I saw them as a very calm force with their vocals guiding my eyes on the screen. When I think back to it, I can't help but think of it as a calming ocean wave when you're alone on the beach on a semi-cold day. They're calming, soft and it's as if I was left in a dark alleyway when their soft, comforting presence came by and 'guided me home'.
Yes and it's definitely their style, when they go with soft concepts. I remember watching them perform "Your eyes tell" and someone in the comments said, that Tae seemed unwell, because of his arm placed in front of his body, when this was probably a deliberate decision to appear vulnerable because it suits the tone. Even if they were bored they wouldn't show it. I believe they are just "in character" on stage.

I can see how their affect could be interpreted as disinterest, but I chose to view their intended vibe as portraying the intense sadness and dealing with the frustrations of an entire year of living through the Pandemic.

Responding to your comment about being disinterested, I think that might be the style/habit from performing in Korea? I feel like a lot of Kpop singers take on more “meditative” or calm expressions when performing sad songs (even really downright depressing ones), while American/Anglophone singers tend to be more strongly emotive. Probably just a generalization though

I agree. I didn't feel they were disinterested. I think they were being pensive. The length of that instrumental section made it a little awkward, but I think they did a good job. Think of the lyrics. Any other facial expressions would have not matched the song.
Yes, it's true. They put their heart to that sad song. They love that music that's why their faces shows emotions like that. You don't want to show smiling faces when you are singing sad song. Don't use the word "disinterested" because BTS are great when they sing sad song they show their emotion. When the music is happy of course they will show their happy faces.

I think they are just expressing their sadness of not being able to perform for their fans and try to comfort them with this song, also I think it was kinda hard for them to perform this song, they are focused to not mess up since it's a very important song for Coldplay. I agree with your opinion about accents, people often expect a foreigner to try their best to imitate an American accent while singing a song in English, but that expectation is kinda boring and based on wanting them to accommodate to your own comfort. Most Italians who have albums in Spanish don't try to hide their Italian accent, and it's very charming.

It depends. Some genres are more forgiving to foreign accents like rock for example. The Sex Pistols sang Frank Sinatra's "My Way" in a Cockney English accent and it works because it was punk rock but if it was done as a jazz standard it would have sounded comical. Blur and Oasis are both English bands singing with a working class English accent (Blur sings in Cockney while Oasis in Manchunian accent)...and it works. Klaus Meine from the German rock band Scorpions has a noticeable German accent when he sings and it still works. Now imagine this...a Chinese singing country in a very noticeable Chinese accent or sings jazz standards....you'd roll on the floor laughing! Honestly.

Thank you for all you do!
I think they wanted to keep a somber mood for the performance based on the lyrics as well as the context behind the song. BTS are very intentional with everything so I’m sure they did research before as well as coordinated how they wanted their facials to look for the performance. Also since the song isn’t in their native language since it’s translated they would know the song is for Chris martins wife when her father died and it has sad origins so I think they probably thought it would be disrespectful to seem to upbeat and charismatic for the video.

I agree. Since this is a very personal song about the grief of a Coldplay member's wife, I think BTS was being quite careful to show respect.

Hey Sam! I didn’t see them as disinterested, I saw them just as relaxed and making the song the main focus. We know BTS are great performers, dancers and such and so I felt they were laid back and like letting the song take the focus and not anything they were doing. Like it was all about the song and lyrics. Love your channel!

Im actually going to add on your disinterested comment, I kinda caught what you meant by that but I think it was a mixture of the song being sad and just them not being able to perform for so long. They thrive in concerts and everything they've done im the past year has been small with only a camera infront of them. Makes me think the story they were telling was also for them
The feeling I got from this performance was that being such a meaningful song for so many people and for the authors themselves, BTS wanted to perform it in the most respectful way possible.

I think they were just getting in the mood of the song that is rather serious, bc watching their tiny desk performance you can see them all standing up, dancing and just having fun even tho it was siting performance, but with this one it's not really much they could do. for me they were in this melancholic head space. you can also watch their other mtv unplugged performances, they were definitely lighter

I think it's not a lack of interest but their way to express to be meaningful and seriously.
As soon as you said the word "disinterest," I immediately agreed. I was trying to find the word when you said it.
In 한 걸 (Hangul) the letter ㄹ is a wierd mixture of 'L' and 'R'. One doesn't bend the tounge very much like an English 'R'. I think that they have over compensated and that is why the 'R' is emphasised. Also - there is no letter 'V'. You can pick this up when V (green microphone) says 'forever'. In their song 'Young Forever' he kinda says 'for-errer'.

i do have a theory on the tone set by the very particular stage presence of the group here. yes. every aspect of their work is intentional. i believe this performance was tailored to be a kind of calling card to chris martin, the lead singer of coldplay. i believe they wanted to demonstrate their strong vocal abilities without the distraction of flashy dance moves, or other things that may seem less relatable to the coldplay brand. and they had total success, because they collaborated with coldplay on the song, ‘my universe’. mission accomplished. i’m sure their management team realize the collaboration would have been a harder sell if they shot a video for ‘fix you’ with the same production structure as say, ‘butter’. right…? look at the coldplay video for ‘yellow’. although it was shot under very extreme circumstances, the video has the usual coldplayesque function of using the visuals just enough to bring more focus to their superb music.
and so, in conclusion, etcetera, and so on. simple bts video wins the day. & everyone involved threw an extra ten million on the barbie. ❤🎶
i think they are just really feeling the song. Jin has had this song on his spotify playlist for years. He loves this song. They just wanted to do it justice and its beautiful.

I understand why you interpreted their performance's feeling as disinterest but for me when they released this cover I was quite having a hard time personally that when I was watching the video I didn't realize my tears are already falling. Like you know that feeling when that one friend comforts you just by staying with you without saying a word, some people might view that as disinterest, but for me, it's a non-verbal way to make you feel less lonely and feel understood. It's a feeling that they're not trying to feel the same feelings you feel but they are ready to listen and be with you until you're okay.

i think they perform it like that to give solemn vibe, to make it look/sound intimate. personally i like it that they do this once in a while, so the audience focus on their voices and the message of the song without being distracted by flashy dance choreography cute facial expressions

In my opinion, BTS tried to respect the original feeling of Chris Martin when he composed this song. I can imagine he tried to give some hope to his love who lost her family at that time. The costume BTS was wearing here might be honoring this behind story and the ribbon on their sleeves may also symbolize the country or its local tradition for the loss.
Disinterest? No... I definitely don't read it as that. Hmm how would I describe it... introspective maybe? Thoughtful, calm, melancholic, reflective... yeah something like that. To me, it fits the song and what they wanted to convey perfectly.

I think when considering the way they decided to perform the song (i.e. the "disinterest" you mentioned) it's important to think about the timing. They've put out this cover as a message of comfort and healing for their fans after a really traumatic year. But the thing is, as much as we need some comfort and healing, we're all tired, and no doubt so are they. If they had performed this song at another time, maybe they would have been more energetic, passionate, dynamic, etc. But right now? I think that would have felt disingenuous. I think BTS understand that when you're in pain, false or forced positivity is unhelpful.
So while I can see why you might have perceived their performance as being disinterested, to me it came across as sincere and reserved, full of the kind of gentle sensitivity that everyone needs right now. That moment just after the guitar solo when RM says "let me be there" says it all in my opinion. They're not trying to hype us up or make us feel any way in particular, they're just sitting quietly beside us and telling us it's okay to feel however we feel, even if that's sad.
You cut all Jin's parts that, honestly, were the best and most emotional. What a shame

I think that the ‘disinterested’ look was them trying to look somber, as this person in the comments said, but maybe it was a bit difficult for them to “connect” to the song the way do with their own, because of the language barrier. Although I’m sure they know what the song is about, maybe they don’t understand line by line, sentence by sentence what they are singing about, which might make it trickier to look convincingly somber, if that makes sense. Anyways, thanks for telling us more about the vocal side of this performance, take care! 💛

It came across as somber and possibly frustration at constantly being separated from a live audience. They did other performances for the same event that were very engaged but this song felt like they wanted it to have a weight to it instead of lighter.

As a huge beach boys fan who loves vocal harmonies and that doo wop style I dig this performance and you gotta respect that they are killing it in what isnt their first language.
