    UK windows 98 pc's normally had freeserve on packard bell's not sure about others OEMS

      @RetroSuperhighway  2 года назад

      That would make sense, Freeserve were pretty huge here for a time. I Think I remember the Packard Bells would normally brand other bits of the PC too, such as their logo in deice manager, desktop wallpapers etc. (Along with all the other bloatware they put on them! )

    Subscribed! Edit: I have not heard the word "TweakUI" in many, many years. I was in the shower and when you started talking about TweakUI I experienced a flood of emotions and memories. This is what retro is all about!

      in the late 90s I built all PCs that came into the household during all those years. There was a great computer store that went to, would grab a shopping cart and go up and down the lanes selecting all my components.
      Now only gamers build computers out of the latest components - and the reto computing enthusiadt build old, obsolete PCs. All those retailers that had brick and mortar stores are all gone, so is all online retail now.
      The late 90s were the golden years for doing custom PC builds.

    Who needs to build a "new" windows 98 system, my 25 yr old SuperMicro P6SBU is still working great with 2 SCSI drives that are also 25 yrs old.

    Only just discovered this channel; your presentation is very good indeed. Getting more difficult and expensive to find old hardware now, especially in Cornwall : ( My interests are very similar to yours so I get where you're coming from. Good luck for the future!

      Thanks! Sadly you are correct about the cost of retro hardware, hopefully things drop to more reasonable levels in the coming months and years, but I don't think it will...

    6:06 the reason for the weird looking line that you see on your monitor through your camera is because your camera isnt synced to your monitor's refresh rate, im guessing that you're recording on 50fps but your monitor is at 60hz, you need to sync them both otherwise you'd get those terrible flickering, sort of like those old crt monitors, maybe a 60hz with a 60fps film would solve your problem? but since i think your camera isnt that powerful, i guess your best bet is setting your monitor's refresh rate to 50hz and your camera 50fps.
    im not sure if oled works like this as well, but lcd and crt monitors im sure of.
    but anyway, very good first impression on the channel and the video overall, cant wait to see some of your other videos!

      Thank you for help and advice! I can change between 50Hz and 60Hz shutter on the camera, and set it independently of frame rate, which I can also change. I'll have a play around with them and sync them to the monitor re-fresh rate to see if it helps. I hope it does, I hate those lines!

      If it's moire pattern then as far as I know there isn't any other way than setting the camera focus a bit off, or using a really high resolution monitor, or filming the monitor from farther away.
      Edit: Wikipedia mentions that it's possible to avoid the effect by aiming the camera at an 30 degree angle to the monitor

      Thanks for the tips! It'll make it a bit tricky if I'm trying to fill the frame with the monitor to show what is on it, but I'm happy for anything that helps. I'll give them a try.

    I noticed that NEC LCD is a 17 inch. This means that it has an aspect ratio of 5:4 and a native screen resolution of 1280 by 1024. So, make sure that you have Windows 98 SE and your software set to these settings. If you are running older games or software that does not support 1280 by 1024, then you need to switch to a 15 inch LCD. They have an aspect ratio of 4:3 and a native screen resolution of 1024 by 768. ALWAYS use an LCD at its native aspect ratio and screen resolution if you want a great looking picture and fast performance. I talk more about this, as well as proper DPS for gaming, on my channel. Anyway, this video would be good if I did not see your moving hand so much. It is very distracting. It would be better if you sat next to your computer and have the camera aimed at you. This way you can talk to your audience and we can see what you look like. This makes for a much better video. 😃

      Thanks for the tip! I tend to only use the NEC LCD on the bench for testing so matching the resloution to the native resolution of the screen isn't always top of my list. Plus I don't want to have the stuff on screen too small for the camera. If I have an LCD set up permanently for a system, I always try and run at native resolution where I can.

      I couldn't disagree more with @hanscampbell. Your presentation style is great. I think it is hilarious that he's giving advice on shooting videos given that he thinks people want to spend an hour watching somebody install a PSU and fans into a case. Long videos are only OK if its interesting. This Win98 build, so far, has been a great watch.
