    Thank you so much for this video! I am a film composer and recently purchased an Uplift desk, which is solid wood. I was able to install the sliding keyboard tray, and am now making a how-to video for women, and will link back to your video as well, with your blessings. Very few women make how-to videos for anything involving a drill, so I'll let you know when it's done!

    Hi my friends - musicians. Before you build such a kind of slider/tray, make sure you have enough space/height for legs.
    If not, you can use longer rails or two rails and to push the keyboard deeper. So for the processing job you can feet your legs under the table.

      It was at first, but I added an angled galvanized steel support bracket that spans the entire length of the shelf, greatly increasing the support. This is great, was wondering how is this holding up? I'm going to make the exact same setup and it's gonna be screwing inside an ikea karbly. For some reason there's something extremely enerving about having my 38lbs digital piano floating because the desk is particle board. I'm probably going to do what you did but ad even more L brackets, but just curious if you've found this to this day if you still own this setup?
    Also your desk is 1 inch correct? kinda eyeballing it but i'd be willing to go get solid wood table top at a decent price i've found at homedepot if that is indeed 1" your using. For some reason I thought 3/4 screws would be a bit small for this kind of tray

    • @TechedOff
      @TechedOff  2 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for watching! I still use it today and it hasn’t budged since I installed it. My desk is solid wood but the shelf is particleboard. The l brackets provide plenty of support and I used several on each side spaced out to evenly support the weight. If anything I’d be more concerned about the particleboard shelf than the desk since my desk is solid wood. My desk is indeed one inch thick.

    Question. 66" x 35" under desk clear. Rectangle legs on either side.
    Keyboard 56"W 11.10" D 5" Tall. Weight 40.8 lbs. Need piano to be back
    towards the back of the desk, then pull box on slides to edge of the
    desk, slides in box extend out 12" so the piano can be played. Unable to
    get advice on the best sliders to use, meaning the under the desk part,
    pretty straight forward, however when it comes to pulling out another
    set of slides, they need to be able to handle the weight, not wobble
    up-down left-right. With the width being 56 wide, figuring out weight
    stress is touch. Could you offer any suggestions? I wonder if there is a
    way to not use an enclosed box, or other ways to make this project
    better? Thanks

    • @TechedOff
      @TechedOff  2 года назад

      Thank you for watching! Probably the most important aspect of the project is to be sure that the sliders are able to hold both the weight of the keyboard but also the shelf material you use. You probably wouldn’t need to attach the sliders or blocks of wood to the desk as many times as I did, but I wanted to be absolutely sure they wouldn’t loosen over time and so far I haven’t noticed any movement or loosening at all of the screws. As for the keyboard moving while playing, there are sliders that lock in place when pulled out, like mine do, that keep the shelf from sliding in and out during use. If you wanted the side fastening sliders instead of the top mounting like I used, those would definitely work too, but you’d want a longer block on each side to mount the sliders to.

      @@TechedOff If u wanted to push the shelf back where the front of shelf is 25" back from the front edge, and when at the front side you needed to pull the shelf out 12" to lock and play --- would you use rails inside the under desk to get the front edge, and then with another set of rails telescope tje shelf out to play position to play? Nearly all seem to barely get the wide shelf barely under the desk, however with my knee, I need to be able to push the front, back under the desk until the front of box or shelf or both are 34" back. It is cooking my noodle. Any thoughts? Build a box that holds the shelf and keyboard until pulled to the desk edge and then use two more rails. By the way I will send a link to a genius who build something like this on a ship, I kid you not. He only uses high end stuff, very interesting read. His problem, on a ship the is no space to push it back except barely under. Hit me back if you can. Desperately trying to get this done. Appreciate the suggestions.

The desk is raised with spacers so my legs are able to fit underneath the table and keyboard comfortably. I have been comfortable so far using it. My only issue is my bed is directly behind my desk so I don’t have too much room to adjust my chair around as I play, but that’s a function of the size of my room rather than the desk itself. But it seems to me this way the table is really high (32"). If I raise my chair to meet the hight, my feet hardly still touch the ground, plus my knees would go up against the shelf again. (I'm 5' 8") Maybe I'm missing something. Would really be great to hear how this works out for you. Thank you!

Your keyboard and mouse are a tad higher than you'd be used to, but thankfully I've personally gotten used to it. • @TechedOff
      @TechedOff  3 года назад +1

      These particular rails don't come out as far as some other tracks, but they are height adjustable. Most of the tracks that I found that extended farther had no way to adjust them vertically like these allow. A bit of a trade off was made on my part to get them to fit, but I noticed many of the higher end keyboards are much taller than the beginner ones. I wanted to leave myself room to upgrade in the future without having to remount the entire tray. There are probably ways to mount the longer extending tracks lower with longer boards etc., but stability might become an issue at that point. My keyboard extends far enough for me to expose the keys and the I/O but not the entire keyboard. I made that trade off but having less extension gives it more stability, especially while playing. Thanks for watching and I'm glad I was able to help you out!

      I really appreciate you watching! The Thickness of the shelf is 7/8 inches and it is about 15 inches. Of course you could always use a thicker or slightly deeper shelf if you wanted to use something heavier than I did. If you have any more questions please ask! :)

    Hi i am looking for to maybe do something like this. But i have a thinner keyboard so i dont need the log thing you put between the rail and the desk. But i have some questions. First of all whatt for desk are you using, is it ikea or something? and second is if this is in your way for your knees and legs or if it works. And third is if an ikea table like kalby which is 3.8cm thicc and the ground material is chipboard can hold a keyboard and the rail with just some screw or if its unstable.

    • @TechedOff
      @TechedOff  Год назад

      Thank you so much for watching! My countertop is an ikea oak Hammarp. Not sure if they are still sold or not. Two ikea Alex drawers on the side. Hasn’t been in my way at all since I added the desk risers. It definitely was in the way before since there was a need for more clearance underneath with the keyboard below. I would definitely use solid wood and not veneered for this application. With the weight of the keyboard hanging underneath, that extra stability definitely helps.

    Hi, thank you very much for the video! I was wondering how is the desk tray behaving through the test of time? I want to do something similar and since I don't find any prebuild desk tray that allows me to fit my wider midi controller I was wondering if your solution was durable and if you've had any issues with the piano's weight, with the desk curving or with the tray itself.

    • @TechedOff
      @TechedOff  2 года назад +3

      Hey thanks for watching that's a great question! With my specific solution, I have not yet had any issues with table bowing or the shelf loosening in any way. While my shelf is particleboard with some slight reinforcement, my tabletop is solid oak, and it has held up from the weight of the keyboard as well as me leaning on it daily. I use a Kawai es110 that weight about 38 pounds and I haven't yet had any issues with the shelf or piano. If you have any other questions, please ask!

I still don’t know a lot regarding that but . I want to end up doing this. My setup is gaming / music production. I was planning on using michals drawer units which are about the same as the Alex drawers. I have 2 monitors and a pair of edifier 1850db and an older klipsch 10 sub. Hi there !
    I'm looking to build a setup based on yours (really nice video, by the way), but I am wondering about the clearance space between your legs and the piano tray while you are using your keyboard + mouse.
    As I am pretty tall, I'm worried I might have to raise the desk a bit higher in order to fit my legs under the piano tray, but there is a limit to the height a computer chair can be lifted without getting uncomfortable behind the knees.
    May I ask you how much space you have left between your legs and the piano tray, and if it's not too personal, what is your height ?
    Thanks again for the video, and have a good day.

    • @TechedOff
      @TechedOff  3 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for watching! No worries there. I'm about 5'10" and I have about 2 inches when I'm sitting down between the top of my legs and the bottom of the piano drawer. The option of raising the desk higher is always there, however like you mentioned comfort can be a factor if it is raised too high. My chair is at the max height that it is able to rise, but I am also quite heavy so it sinks just a bit while I am sitting. While I don't have room to dance and jump underneath the desk, I am comfortable and am able to sit and game or do work without feeling uncomfortable. If you have any other questions please ask as I'm glad to help!

    Nice work dude! Would this work with any ikea table top?

    • @TechedOff
      @TechedOff  3 года назад

      Hello and thanks for watching! It probably would, but my main concern would be using veneered wood instead of solid wood as it won’t provide as much support with a piano pulling down on it. I’d either pick up a solid wood tabletop from a Home Depot or Lowe’s since I don’t think ikea sells solid countertops anymore or use a veneered tabletop but add some extra reinforcement to keep it stable.

    Can this system hold a midi keyboard that weighs above 20kg ?
    Also does the sliders have a lock system or does it make the tray slide back in when playing your digital piano ? Looking forward for your reply 🙂

    • @TechedOff
      @TechedOff  3 года назад +1

      Hey and thanks for watching! I'm glad to have helped you with your project. The slider product page on Amazon simply states that the weight capacity depends on the method that you use to mount the tracks to your surface. Obviously my method is plenty overkill by most standards. My piano is 38 pounds plus a couple of pounds for the shelf, and I've noticed zero movement, wobble, or loosening of the shelf or tracks from their mounting points. As long as you are not putting something really heavy like 50kg or so, you'd probably be OK. As for the locking system, yes! These tracks do lock in place when fully pulled out so that the keyboard does not slide back underneath your desk when playing. I was specifically worried about that when designing this and looked for tracks with that specific feature. Obviously you don't need to use the exact tracks that I did, as the dimensions of your keyboard may differ from mine. But I can say that the general design works great and I'd definitely recommend it to others. I appreciate your patience and I hope this response helped you out. If you have any other questions please ask!

      @@TechedOff thank you for such a detailed response. Actually I am planning to get the studiologic Sl88 Grand which weighs around 20-21kg. But since you mentioned that this slider can take 50kg load then I guess 20kg wouldn't be a problem then. As for the dimensions, I already have the table made accordingly but I am just planning to upgrade the tray system like the way you set it up . Hoping everything works out :)

    • @TechedOff
      @TechedOff  3 года назад

      Does yours move around a lot? Mine has been fine so far. Yes you are definitely right that the longer the tracks extend the less support there is which is why I mounted my tracks as far forward as possible so I could extend them as little as possible while still having access.
