Ansel's performance as Agustus is absolutely incredible. He doesn't hold back one bit, he just immerses himself completely in his character. This scene is so sad, but so beautifully done. And for those of you who say that you laughed at this, to answer your questions: yes, you do come off as a horrible person. Commenting something that implies you find this scene comical is just heartless. There is nothing funny about this scene, he is portraying a fatally ill teenager who has completely lost hope. He drools and cries because that is something that would actually happen to a person in real life. He wasn't just trying to act, he was becoming a cancer patient as best as he could. And he did a wonderful job. So stop mocking this scene with your childish laughter, and learn to embrace the beauty of it.
sina madani Excuse me, you're not one who can call someone else an idiot, do you even know what proper grammar and punctuation are? I doubt it. Also, how in the hell am I trying to be a victim? Clearly you're the idiot if that's how you interpreted my comment. I'm not personally offended by people's comments; I think they are rude and unnecessary. That's why I commented. And you should probably learn to read as well, because I never once implied that people were saying cancer is funny.
Cassidy Jones by attacking other peoples opinions aggressively, then getting upset when someone does the same, see in the England language we call this HYPOCRISY.
+sina madani I don't think she attacked anyone "aggressively". She was stating her opinion, that's all. And unlike you she didn't call people "fucking idiot". So I think it's you who should stop attacking others opinions aggressively for no reason in such a childish way.
This scene gutted me in the book. Gus was like this perfect untouchable angel who never faltered. And then he broke. Physically and mentally he broke. And it was so so awful to see him fall.
According to me they deleted 3 importants scenes -> Isaac in hospital -> when we see John Green in the airport when a little girl talk to Hazel about what she has in her nose -> and this one
as a male viewer this movie even made me cry, its not so much the story but the acting was done so well by all these guys, especially these two,but he's sick, his best friend goes blind, then his girl is sick on oxygen, its like damn so much negatives at once. Ansel & Shai killed it.
Another thing that would've made the film more sad is if they included Augustus' ex girlfriend from the book, Caroline. After Caroline was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Augustus tells Hazel how she slowly became more angry, cruel, and unfiltered towards him until her death. Being curious, Hazel later looks up Caroline's pictures and sees her gradually getting more sick. On her final photos online, Hazel thinks how similar she and Caroline look and starts to feel self conscious about it. Augustus later reassures her about this, saying that he doesn't see Caroline in her but Hazel still thinks this was the reason why he kept staring at her when they first met. Caroline was actually casted, along with Hazels friend from the book Kaitlyn, but were edited out before filming.
This scene made me think to myself, I don't think I want to watch this movie again. I think this movie was an excellent movie. It was well acted. But after this part in the movie it started to get really sad. I knew it was going to be a tear jerker, but i didn't think it was going to hit me in the gut or make my heart ache. I don't know if I should get it on DVD??? because yes it wasa very sad movie but it was a sweet movie as well, and well acted. I'm torn.
I only buy movies on dvd if I liked the movie enough to watch it again. If you buy the movie, but never watch it, you're kind of wasting money, don't you think? You're practically paying for the case rather than the actual dvd. Just a thought. I agree this movie was a good movie. Well written, well made, overall if something makes you feel a strong emotion, I think it's a good movie, but not once since the first time I saw it, did I have the desire to rewatch it because It just has so much emotion tied to it.
Christine Sumil just after augustus dies and hazel calls his phone to hear his voicemail. to me it felt like that was when she realised that he was actually gone x
this was the most emotional scene for me. I can't stop watching it, it's just so raw and emotional and real. every time i just cry because that poor sweet boy just wanted to do something on his own. :(
Olivia Petrowski shailene woodley played tris in divergent, insurgent, and allegiant, and ansel played caleb in those movies, and caleb and tris are brother and sister. that’s what she means :)
"And you say you don't write peotry" that was seriously one of my favourite quotes in the whole book. Even then, when you felt that the Augustus you had fallen in love with had faded, with that quote you realised that he was still there... wish they wouldve included it
They should've also included the scene with Isaac and the console. While apparently just comedic, if you actually look at it, it shows how big of a hole Gus left after his demise
This scene tore my heart out, I can't rewatch it anymore because it's literally too much for me to handle. A solid did an incredible job playing this role.
I think this scene was so much more emotional in the book, nothing wrong with this clip I just think the words made it more powerful instead of actually seeing it, it worked better because you could interpret it for yourself and that made it more painful, at least for me.
The paramedic was looking at him like that bc the poem was written by a guy that was also a doctor tending to a sick patient when he saw a red wheelbarrow outside. Also it actually is over when she paused and she made the rest up. Guessing the paramedic knew exactly what was going on.
It’s definitely the saddest for me cause of his personality, funny, fun, sweet, and this really caught me off guard. But it shows how much pain he was going through and how that must be so hard. But teens and kids are going through this and it’s unimaginable. Amazing acting
I have many issues with this book, mainly due to experience, but this was the ONE scene that genuinely touched me, for personal reasons. I'm pleased that the film did a good job portraying that scene.
This scene IS a deleted scene (Hazel reading the poem to Gus). It IS NOT in the theatrical version of the film that played in theaters. It IS, however, present in the EXTENDED VERSION of the film which you can buy on DVD/Blu-ray.
=C this is so sad, He was beating on the wheel saying he hated his self. I bet if this was real and i was hazel i would feel so bad, but i would have done the right thing.
This is a scene you can't make a joke about. It's so sad, it catches you off guard from the normally happy-go-lucky and optimistic Gus Waters. Imagine, one day, your friend is very cheery and bubbly, and then the next they're begging and crying to be killed. That's a very traumatic thing for both of you, and just as I say, you can't make jokes about trauma, and there's no excuse for it.
First time I watched this was with my family when we use to have movie nights and we were all in shocked silence at this scene with mum and sister in tears
Everytime I watch this scene it brings me emotional pain. My school made me watch this as part of a project. But what sucked is I found out my mother had cancer a week prior.
didn't cry over the book and movie but this was sooo freaking said. John Green should definitely keep trying to make a movie for Looking for Alaska that is his best work
I think it was because the scene had drama that intentionally would recommend Gus commiting suicide in the movie, and its supposed to be about Gus cheering Hazel up and making her happy for who she is, not the other way around. That's the storyline in the book anyway's, and in the trailer and mostly the movie. Plus its kinda gross that they showed his G-tube e.e (My opinion anyway.)
Ansel's performance as Agustus is absolutely incredible. He doesn't hold back one bit, he just immerses himself completely in his character. This scene is so sad, but so beautifully done. Reading the book, I cried so hard at this part.
i just finished the book like 10 minutes ago and i started crying at that point and cried until the book was over.

Ansel Elgort was INCREDIBLE in this scene. He had so much raw emotion that I cry every time I see it.
Ansel's acting here was phenomenal. You could definitely tell Gus was in a lot of pain, as he called her Hazel as opposed to Hazel Grace :(
This scene gutted me in the book. Gus was like this perfect untouchable angel who never faltered. And then he broke. Physically and mentally he broke. And it was so so awful to see him fall.
I'm crying so hard and my parents come in and they think I'm weird now.

This was an important scene, why would they take this out?!

It's in the extended version.
Dayra Cruz
maybe you have the extended version. Cause the version I have doesn't show her telling Gus the Red Wheelbarrow.

I mean he didn’t have to date Hazel, she already had cancer when they met
Another thing that would've made the film more sad is if they included Augustus' ex girlfriend from the book, Caroline. @@BrandonL_00 I like thinking that Hazel Grace and August's were each other first loves. Which makes his passing even more bittersweet.
This scene made me think to myself, I don't think I want to watch this movie again. I think this movie was an excellent movie. It was well acted. Completely agree. It was great, but I think I must've cried a few days after I watched it. Never again.

I only watch it up until he tells her that he’s stuck on their trip :(
i wish they had put in the phone call scene. that felt important to me. and i wish she had opened the casket
right!
Same
+Kim Dalton I think I saw the phone call scene when HBO aired the film

I literally balled my eyes out.
MissRandomAwsomeness comeback here to cry again
I haven't even watched this movie. Just by watching this one scene I'm absolutely blown away by the acting. Well done.
You NEED to watch the movie (but read the book first)
I think reading the book first is best so that you can get mentally prepared for the movie 😥
+Abigail Lawrence yessss read the book first
In the book the part that made me cry the most was at his funeral when she kisses him on the cheek and says “okay..”
I think if funny how they go from playing brother and sister to boyfriend and girlfriend. I bet it was a little weird.
Kendra Atkins Wait what?
Olivia Petrowski shailene woodley played tris in divergent, insurgent, and allegiant, and ansel played caleb in those movies, and caleb and tris are brother and sister. that’s what she means :)
I saw this scene in the movie...the feels.
this scene in the book was so much worse

This is making me cry too much i ❤️ this movie so much
This scene breaks me every time I watch it :( Ansel’s acting is amazing!
For some reason, this scene is where I completely lost it in the theater.. Couldn't breathe I was crying so hard 😂😫
This is such an amazing and realistic film but after watching it once I don’t think I’ll ever watch it again, that’s how powerful it is
Is it just me because I replayed the scene where Hazel says " Babe what's wrong" ITS JUST SO CUTE😍❤️😍someone plz tell me I'm not the only one😑
Ella wait what happened to him

His pain and desperation is so real here.
honestly....this was jst an outstanding performance....its 2018 and I still come back to watch this scene so many years afterthe movies release.
It’s definitely the saddest for me cause of his personality, funny, fun, sweet, and this really caught me off guard. But it shows how much pain he was going through and how that must be so hard. But teens and kids are going through this and it’s unimaginable. Amazing acting
The most beautiful, heartwrenching scene in the entire movie is RIGHT HERE.

"So much depends... on this observer of the universe."
As someone who is into Einstein's general theory of relativity, this statement hits me hard.
This wasn't part of the movie? lmaoo I was watching it free online, and this was in it. Omg
You were probably watching the extended version
I was reading this part on a flight and I controlled my urge to cry. I didn't want to break down 😭😭
Ansel really did that king of acting
My classmates and I still can't move on because of this story. This is so nice and inspirational. Thumbs up!!!
I'm crying watching this scene. It's really touching.
I hope there is a deleted scene in the funeral, where she open the casket.
Genius comment. 😍😍😍
ikr!
Why do I keep watching this... I'm in tears every time
Well frick. I was just trying to do some research for an English project and this is where I ended up.
i'm crying
i cry all the times i read this book
omg
gus... i'll never forget you. even if you don't exist.
this is a beautiful scene. Hazel and Gus were the perfect couple.
Everytime I watch this scene it brings me emotional pain. My school made me watch this as part of a project. But what sucked is I found out my mother had cancer a week prior.

Ansel is such a good actor, I felt his pain, I feel like I’m there.
i am fine watching this movie up until this part. i cry my eyes out every time.

Anyone watching or reading this scene in 2023?? ❤
When I first saw this scene it brought tears to my eyes.
This movie is unforgettable ♥️
from the beginning to 1:46 i cried so bad poor augustus.
This scene really hurts ☹️😢
I couldn't stop crying !!!
this is how i acctually seen it in my mind while reading the book (not exactly but close enough)
I cant stop crying.
didn't cry over the book and movie but this was sooo freaking said. John Green should definitely keep trying to make a movie for Looking for Alaska that is his best work
Why did they delete this....
+Maddie i seen this scene in the movies with my gf, mabey they didn't show it in some areas
I'm glad I've seen this part.
Tina Marie F they did not
