Almost Aborted: Tina's Daughter's Down Syndrome Diagnosis

  • My name is Tina, and this is my pressured to abort story. When I was 20 weeks pregnant, my OB/GYN told me to abort my daughter because she might have Down syndrome. At our 20-week ultrasound, the tech suddenly got quiet and started taking extra notes and images. The doctor promptly came in and told us that our daughter had two markers for Down syndrome and strongly urged me to have an amniocentesis test done. We declined, knowing it wouldn’t change anything for us. But my doctor didn’t ease up. She became frustrated with me and then requested that I follow her into a private room, away from my husband, to sign a form acknowledging that I was not following her medical recommendation. This is my Pressured to Abort story.

      Take Viola’s House, a pregnancy center and maternity home in Dallas. Records show that it pays a nearby diaper bank an administrative fee of $1,590 for about 120,000 diapers annually - just over a penny apiece. Viola’s House can then bill the state $14 for distributing a pack of diapers that cost the center just over a quarter. Propublica followed the money. This is all a grift for political interests. Giving birth was never illegal in this country.

    Yes, same happened to me in 2006! Two markers for DS via ultrasound and yet child is healthy without DS. Doctor recommended abortion. I refused. I was so upset that i refused my c-section and delivered at home where i felt safe. Today, this child is a straight A student headed for university.

      @nglchff 2 месяца назад +2

      Um, **NO** your doctor didn't label you as a geriatric, high-risk pregnancy just for s*1ts and giggles. At 44, you are middle age. Middle age bodies are more likely to develop high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high glucose. You're more likely to have a stroke or a heart attack than you were at say 25. You are at an age where many people are going through peri-menopause -- an early stage of menopause. These are all conditions which place you **AND YOUR FETUS** at substantially higher risk for permanent disability or even death. YOU are at even greater risk **BECAUSE YOU HAVE ALREADY HAD A PREGNANCY DURING WHICH YOU DEVELOPED GESTATIONAL DIABETES** . When your doctor labels you as a high risk patient, THEY HAVE A REASON. Let me ask you this: if your child is born with a defect THAT YOUR NEGLIGENCE CAUSED, how will you feel? How do you think your child will react when you have to tell them that you ignored the doctors' recommendations and as a result, they are blind? "Mommy could have prevented this by taking better care of herself and listening to the doctor when I was told that my blood pressure was too high, but I refused to listen." How about your other children or your husband, should you DIE during pregnancy or birth? Do you honestly think your husband would be forgiving of the doctor **IF THEY FAILED TO INFORM YOU AND HIM OF THE RISKS OF A PREGNANCY THIS LATE IN LIFE?** Spare me your false indignation. You would probably be first to sue. Your doctor is doing the best he can, and trying to bring about the best outcome for both you and your family. If you disagree, why don't you go back to college, get your degree, then go to medical school, and spend the next dozen years or so training to become an ob-gyn. Then, let's talk.

      You mean no one took your right to give birth? Quaint observation. Giving birth is legal in every single state. Because choice advocates believe you should have disabled kids if that's what you want. It's the right not to be pregnant that's been taken. Act like these people didn't have the right to give birth when that right was never once removed from them.

It's very possible for people to have an experience that doesn't fall with the parameters of the statistics. In fact, it happens all the time. Hence, the video....did you even watch it?
      Moral of the story? We're sick of medical professionals using fear to push people into making decisions. That's manipulative and wrong. You can inform, but it should go no further than that and the way you acted in your comment proves this women's point and my point even more. You tried to guilt and shame her for her decision, that was truly disgusting to read. I really hope your retired and aren't allowed to treat patients like this anymore. @freedomishavingachoice3020 bullcrap. Are you even a woman? Women's health has the most misdiagnosed, the most mistakes, and the most unfeeling medical professionals out of all health fields. Go to any youtube video that has to do with Women's health and you'll find countless comments of women being silenced, forced, coerced, and manipulated into making a decision about their own and their baby's health. I was almost coerced into getting a c-section by my OBGYN but luckily we moved and I had to get a new one. The new one told me I absolutely didn't need one and I had an awesome vaginal birth because of him. My mother was pushed to abort me because I was "supposed" to be born with down syndrome. Luckily, she wasn't a liberal and stood her ground. You don't realize how many mistakes have cost the lives of patients and their children. And I doubt you even care as long as those stories don't fit your agenda.

      Indeed. For example, doctors thought my mom could survive a non viable pregnancy, and it robbed her of making more kids. Killed her fertility. Both doctors and prolife advocates were incorrect about her. Maybe that's why real doctors and choice advocates think you should make that decision for yourself, not your dr. Giving birth was never made illegal in this country. The choice to not stay pregnant, was. Choice advocates have never introduced a bill to deny any person who chooses to be pregnant. This is all fear mongering. The right to give birth was never removed.
