- Times Gone By - Bridlington Walk. The old West Riding of Yorkshire and factory life in the 1970’s
The collapse of the heavy industry and woollen mills - of West Yorkshire an example of a factory closing due to competition from China.
The UK financial crash in 2007 finished many remaining industries although living standards have risen dramatically since the 1970’s when few people had a car.
I’m reminiscing my early working life, some of which was in the textile trade et al before escaping into further education in 1980.
I remember how things were. It was worse, much worse than now in 2024.
The thing was you didn’t realise it. Life just seemed normal- as it does today, unless you’re old enough to remember..
Corrections
1) The hotel in China. £13 was for a 4 course full on dinner for three people. But a week for three people in this 5 star hotel was just under £100.

the ‘sock factory’ is a euphemism for a somewhat different knitted product to protect myself- as I once worked there.
It employed over 200 people in various roles - the owner in the 1920’s turning up at the factory in his Rolls Royce.
The owner was a good man and treated his workers like family.
Workers had a pride in their jobs - it was all swept away and many could never find work again.
( Situated on the border with Lancashire the ‘sock factory’ was derelict for years and is now office space. )
Hope you enjoyed this video which is one of three videos I filmed at Bridlington on Monday 2nd December 2024.
