현존하는 가장 오래된 한옥성당인 대한성공회 강화성당은 인천시 강화군 강화읍 군청리에 있으며, 1900년 대한성공회의 초대 주교인 고요한(Charies Jone Corfe)에 의해 축성되었고, 성베드로와 바우로 성당으로 명명되었습니다. 당시 건축 공사는 경복궁 공사에 참여했던 궁궐 도편수가 주도하였고, 이후 몇차례 보수가 이루어졌으나 처음의 모습 그대로 유지가 되고 있어 2001년 사적 제424호로 지정되기도 했습니다. 성당 내외부에는 서양식 장식이 거의 없는 순수한 한옥 목조건축이면서도 교회기능에 충실한 내부공간을 연출함으로써, 초기 성공회 선교사들의 토착화 의지가 나타나 있을 뿐만 아니라, 한국기독교 역사의 한 단면을 엿볼 수 있는 성당건물이라 하겠습니다.
Ganghwa Anglican Church, the oldest church of Korean traditional building style in Korea, is loacted in Ganghwa-gun, Incheon, Korea. The church was constructed by the first Bishop Charies Jone Corfe in 1900 and named Saint Peter and Paul. A royal architect had led the construction of building. Since then, a few mending works have been done, but the church has been preserved as the original form well. So it was also designated to Historical Site No. 424 in 2001.
