Joe Dante's #SmallSoldiers remains one of the highlight projects in the history of Stan Winston Studio because it provided Winston and his crew with an opportunity to temporarily return to their respective childhoods.
In this behind-the-scenes video from the SWS archives, the Small Soldiers crew rehearses Chip Hazard, the boss of the Commando Elite before the epic battle with Archer, the leader of the Gorgonites.

These were going to be CGI, around 1992'ish I was having my Interview at Londons Jim Hensons Creature Shop, and they were showing me a video tape of this guy - Chip on a kitchen table, then wheels fold out form his back and he zips about, absailing down the table weaving in and out of the table and chair legs...It was a CG test of course, I was impressed, I was 15, so of course I would be, but what they did at SWS was way better, and my 15 year old self would have also agreed. a magical day at Hensons, being interviewed and seeing this stuff, a fairytale indeed.
