Hello.
You're watching Press Perspective for this Thursday December 18th here in Seoul.
I'm Min Sunhee.
Today we touch upon the broader security implications of the political uncertainty here in the country amid brewing tensions with North Korea and a power transition in the U.S.
For more I have Chloe Borgnon with France 24 here in the studio.
Chloe.. it's good to have you here again.
I also have Professor Park Won-gon at Ewha Womans University with us virtually.
Professor Park welcome.
1) Chloe, let's start with a few words on the acting president's efforts to ease diplomatic concerns about Korea's political fallout.
I believe there was a phone call between Acting President Han Duck-soo and U.S. President Joe Biden early last week?
2) Also, Chloe, before we delve deeper, do tell us a bit about Mr. Han Duck-soo and his current role.
3) Professor Park, Mr. Han Duck-soo also reached out to U.S. military authorities to reaffirm commitment to security in light of possible provocations by Pyongyang.
Now, some scholars here believe North Korea may refrain from acts of aggression for a while as it hopes to see the opposition Democratic Party win a snap election.
Do you share this outlook?
4) Professor Park, do you suppose an opposition victory of the snap election here will offer the international community a fresh opportunity to address tensions on the Korean peninsula?
5) Chloe, there is also talk about "another Trump-Kim summit being on the cards" especially in light of the return of a key figure who "helped negotiate" the previous summits.
Do tell us about this figure and the prospects of such a summit.
6) Professor Park, some analysts claim that the incoming Trump administration may resume back-channel diplomacy with North Korea.
Does the power vacuum here raise the possibility of the new U.S. administration sidelining South Korea from engagements with the Kim Jong-un regime?
And what would be the repercussions of that reality?
7) Chloe, a recent commentary published by U.S. think tank RAND appears to suggest the incoming Trump administration should accept North Korea as a nuclear state.
What exactly does it say?
And how would other designated nuclear states like France respond?
8) Professor Park, back onto local affairs.
Speaking to the New York Times, one U.S. pundit observed that "if the Democratic Party regains power, South Korea's foreign policy will shift toward appeasement of North Korea, deference to China, hostility toward Japan, and skepticism of the United States."
How does this shift look to position South Korea within the current geopolitical landscape?
I mean, does such a stance bode well for South Korea's diplomatic agenda in the long run?
All right.
