For a time during the series' run, Fred was "out of town" (due to a salary dispute between Foxx and NBC), leaving Grady in charge of Fred's business, effectively making Grady the main character on the show. During Fred's absence, Grady moved into Fred's house, and also took over the role of Lamont's comic foil. Like Fred before him, he also quite frequently ran afoul of Lamont's formidable Aunt Esther.

Yes Britt, social security is money the govt. took from your check, and what most people don't understand is your employer also pays that same amount to social security in your name. Now there is a very real possibility that people your age may never see it. Politicians have been borrowing against it for over 60 years. This system should never have allowed the government any access to the money in the social security system... Ever.

When the government overpays or accidentally pays you they are required by law to collect it back no matter who made the mistake. They will usually send you a letter explaining the situation and from my understanding they only give you 30 days to pay it back before they charge interest and start the collection process. They usually will hold your tax refund and garnish your wages until it is paid. Anytime you owe the government, it's bad. In Grady's situation I would not have even cashed the extra check

Yes, you and your employer each pay 6.2% of whatever you make for SS. Some people will never collect what they contribute, because they die young, and others will receive more than they contribute, because they live a long time. Then, there arenpeople that will collect that never contribute, but we won't get into that.

Redd Foxx had a hit show pulling in ratings higher than a lot of other shows staring white comedians. He would refuse to do the show unless they paid him the same as everyone else. That is why Grady was living there. They would make up some excuse Fred was visiting a relative or an old friend etc. This way they could make new episodes without Redd Foxx.

Stanford and Son was a direct lift from the BBC comedy Steptoe and Son. Adapted for a US audience.
Like The Office, US versions of British comedy are adapted.
Another comedy in the US featured "Archie Bunker". This was originally a character called "Alf Garnett" from a series called "Til death us do part". Written for the BBC.

Actually, I worked with NYS and SSA for almost 20 years. SSI is for folks who don't have enough to live off of. SSDI (which is what Grady got) is earned according to the amount you make. If Grady did something wrong, he might be in jail, and have to pay fines, and the money back. Since it wasn't his fault, it is a called an "overpayment" and the amount would deduct incrementally from his next years' worth of checks. Finally, a topic I know about.

3:30 You are close on SS. The money you are paying in now is being sent to seniors (other people) who are retired. In the hopes that people after you will do the same for you. It is a "pay it behind" scheme. Opposite of paying it forward. It is like when you go to McDonalds drive thru you tell the window that the person behind you is going to pay for your meal. And they say, "Nope. No money no food!"

Also, how Redd Foxx's character name of Fred Sanford, came from the real life name, shared by the father and brother of Redd Foxx. Who's real name was John Sanford. Just a little fun trivia for everybody.

No, Social Security has become a tax that is spent. Younger generations pay taxes which pay Social Security.
Those of us who are Gen X heard all our life "do NOT expect Social Security to be around when you get older". It is a Ponzi scheme.
A journalist asked Bernie Madoff where he got the idea for his scheme and he told them "The U.S. government's Social Security program".

Government has robbed the social security fund. It was suppose to be a type of "savings account" but the way it works now is all the social security money collected each month pays for the current retirees checks. The problem with that is, we're having more people drawing as the baby boomers have retired and less paying into it.

  • @johnhampton6691

  • @jokerz7936

To Quote Abe Simpson from the Simpsons.
Marge: Where did you get all the money from Grandpa?
Grandpa: The Government I didn't earn it, I don't need it, but if they miss one payment, I'll raise Hell.
As for Social Security the taxes younger people pay today is used to pay for those collecting social security now with the promise the same will be done for them when the time comes. Modern issue is our society is becoming older and one day we might have more people collecting Social Security than paying into it. I hate to say it but there is a lot of truth when someone calls Social Security a Ponzi Scheme.
Also, in real life if this happens to someone, they should contact Social Security and tell them because they will collect every dime if they find out an error was made, and they won't care if it's their fault either.

As hilarious as Sandford and son is even from these little excerpts. you're really missing out on some of the even more hilarious scenes of Sandford and son from the full episodes. Sandford and son ran for six seasons, so there's plenty of episodes for you to react to. For better context of the show, the characters and their relationship among each other. You owe it to yourself to binge watch a few full episodes of the show, you could always react to the ones that you haven't seen yet. You reacted to "Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe" Season 3, Episode 14. but the excerpts didn't show big money Grip, nor did it show what church going Aunt Esther said to big money grip after he told her that Lamont was his son "HILARIOUS". Church going Aunt Esther also suggested what she and Fred should do to big money grip for claiming that Lamont was his son "HILARIOUS". Great reaction.

The fairytale that was spun about Social Security was that you "contributed" (through SS taxes) into a special account, and when you retired you would get your money back with all the interest that it earned. Problem was that more and more people were brought into S.S. under various plans (vote buying), and the money that was collected all went into the Treasury's general revenue funds and was spent. A special non-redeemable note is deposited in your account in its place, to represent what you paid in. The reality is there is not enough money in S.S. to cover all the liabilities, and govt just "prints" the money (techically, thru the Federal Reserve money creation mechanism) every month needed to send out S.S. checks. It was Sen. William Proxmire (D-WIS) who famously commented that the Social Security checks "will always be sent out. The checks may not be worth anything, but they will be sent out." It may have been Sen Gaylord Nelson (D-WIS) instead who said that; they were both in office at the same time, and both were Democrats.

When Fred came back after the contract holdout the show pretty much went to pot.
