The ToneX works perfectly in my rig. I have no desire to give up my Strymon, Wampler, Keeley, Source Audio, etc pedals anyway. I just want the multitude of amps that the ToneX provides without spending $1500+. I like being able to adjust my pedals on the fly and my current setup works perfectly for that.

so what if i dont own pedals? i need to invest alot more money for a quality pedasl,so in the end its not cheaper than the kemper and less convenient to take it to a gig with pedal board.not to mention the need of a computer to edit stuff. cheaper devise but more expensive for use.

In theory, if you find your perfect signature/core tone with several effects involved, you can then name that tone as an amp and capture that tone. I hope to experiment with the Tonex on this front. Building a core Amp tone, then augmenting it with other effects could prove fruitful...and reduce stacking 15 pedals, down to 3 or 4 as your base tone pedals can be physically eliminated from your pedalboard rig.

Yes .... I have the QC and it can do pretty much everything. You could do an entire show with the QC and not need another pedal. With the Tonex you will need Chorus, Phaser, etc that you might want to use. You would need to add other pedals or a Helix Stomp or other to be able to do all the sounds you might want UNLESS of course you are simplistic and only want the amp/cab sound and some reverb. I love my QC but like you also love the ToneX as well. The thing that stinks right now for me is that the QC doesn't have a desktop editor. Great video!

The QC is the most powerful modeler on the planet. The Tonex pedal is a $400 modeling pedal for the "just as good as" crowd. The gear isn't even in the same universe. My Vemuram fuzz pedal cost more than the Tonex. In fact, just about everything on my pedal board cost more than the Tonex. The price isn't the issue, but you ALWAYS get what you pay for. I've seen other reviewers who have Macs who are using Tonex software, and the specs on IKMultimedia's page say it works on a machine (Mac or Windows) that does not have a GPU - according to them it just uses the GPU if you have it to accelerate the training/capture. Curious what problems you had using the software?

@@MadSteex I agree performance in advanced capture is pretty bad, but in the video you say it's "useless" which doesn't really seem to be the case. Advanced mode seems more like one that will do a lot of extra computations in order to squeeze a tiny bit of extra quality out. If you want to do a lot of captures, you definitely are going to want some GPU power, or dedicated hardware (which is why a QC is so expensive!). I have both a Windows PC with a decent nVidia GPU and a Macbook Pro with M1 Pro and I can say while the M1 chips are great overall performance wise, as far as GPU performance goes they really aren't anything special - despite how Apple tries to portray it.

@@MadSteex An unfortunate problem with Apple's ecosystem. nVidia has written some great API to do this type of general purpose GPU processing but Apple has shut them out to focus on their own processors. @MadSteex - stating that Mac with M1 is useless is a bit manipulation, don’t you think? If it will be better on Mac you could say that you need Mac to do the job as popular windows is useless, or you need a gaming machine to do the job.. All these are not true..
Another manipulation is the price - I think around 1800 euro for QC vs 400 euro for Tonex is huge difference for making profile. So for price with comparable(or better) tone quality for modeling hardware Tonex is a killer.

    • @MadSteex
      @MadSteex  Год назад +1

So, if the goal is to capture with Tonex I highly recommend Tonex Capture, for one simple reason: putting aside the fact of the quality of the reamp (which I'm not sure about, I'm not expert of that) Tonex Capture allows you to enter even with only an amp and only with cab (that is, it has separate amp and cab dedicated inputs), be careful that you always have to be attached with a cabinet because it is not a loadbox, but if you use fryette ps100 don't worry. By having separate inputs, as you see on the Tonex plugin you can load just the amp or just the cabinet after you've captured the whole rig (this way you can also mix amps from one capture with cabinets from another capture) and I don't think so that it's like the Kemper that obviously hearing only the arrival of the entire rig, you can exclude the cabinet but I think it's just a digital interpolation that the kemper does. I don't know if I explained myself. If you want write me on instagram we chat by voice.

Re the Kemper, I hated it. The feel was not there. It needed a pedal to help with feel and sound and when I’d lower the guitar’s volume it sounded like a cocked wah. The tiny little screen couldn’t get smaller and the rig manager was a nightmare. Gone sold bye. Love the quad.

The only other modeler I do like and it comes with its own power is the Yamaha 100hd double modeler. It’s got the feel and the sound and it’s $800 new. Much less used. Anyway, good luck buddy. This video does'nt really make sense especially in a real world context. The Tonex should be compared to them for its sounds which are the best, better than the comparable Kemper Player too which is an obvious competitor btw. For a guy gigging like me it still is a good comparison because if you want to get a pedalboard only for example you have the choice between the QC, the Kemper Stage or for cheaper you get the Tonex, an expression pedal and either a HX Stomp or HX Effects which will give you the best Amp and cab sounds on the market, the best effects on the market (Helix reigns supreme on the effects no contest) with a smaller form factor to the Kemper Stage and comparable to the QC but with a sturdier rig and again, cheaper. Nobody cares that the Tonex by itself doesn't really do effects if the sounds are the best and you can get the Stomp or FX for cheaper than the rest, who says you have to stay with just one machine? With its price and form factor and the fact that it has the best sounds the Tonex is a game changer period and if I decide to get rid of my amp I'm going for that for sure. Now the Windows capture thing is a fair point, but the Ik Media downloadable database is growing bigger and bigger so that's part of the solution

I understood your speech and I agree with you, but it only concerns those who want, know and can capture their amps/pedals, it concerns a low % of people as happens for those with kemper and quad cortex. For this reason they prefer to buy professional profiles/captures, therefore ready-made

But in fact I agree with you about the profiles and captures :) In fact I have the three systems only to create profiles/captures, because it's part of my business.
Of course anyone has to make his own comparisons, but I was referring to the fact that there are people who compare the whole A with B and not part of A with part of B precisely because they are different machines, designed for different uses.

Indeed, in general the reasoning is correct, one system does not exclude the other because they are different, each one has features that the other does not have, the ToneX has the least of all but it captures better which is the most important thing. In fact for me, for example, having already had the kemper for years, it will be annoying to have to use the ToneX plugin to capture sounds, then buy a reampbox, switch from the DAW, have a super pc to speed up the capture process. But you will get used to it. I would like to ask you for advice, I do it in the next post

Tonex alone it's not enough because it doesn't have modulation and time based fx, but to simulate amps and cabs are the best. Just one thing I didn't understand...Tonex need windows? Not true, I don't have windows and use tonex editor in my mac with no need to install drivers...BTW, my mac has a 8 core GPU, but i don't know why is necessary for tonex... Maybe because you didn't spend the time to listen what I said carefully, my video is PRO tonex, not against and I've said exactly what you are saying about. Also I'm saying that Tonex is optimized for Windows regarding the capture process, cause is based on Nvidia GPU and the time to process the capture on mac is very long in advanced mode with my Mac Studio M1 Max takes 1 hour and half. Said that, please see the whole video before writing bulshits that I do not said!

The captures of the quad are way better in feel and sound. The Kemper isn’t even in the same league. That’s why I say sold it. There’s something in the quad that I can’t explain because I’m not a software engineer that has something to do with compression ratio etc that makes it feel better. The sounds are just better. Things get better with time and the more software developers learn new ways of doing things.

Any video I have seen claiming the Tonex is a Kemper/QC killer, has made clear (usually multiple times) for anyone needing an all in one solution the Tonex is not the answer. However, you can compare the quality of the tones produced and these videos are definitely serving someone like me, who can't afford a QC or Kemper, but does already own all the other effect types in those boxes and can live with the limitations, ie no effects loop etc

Most of the people who are going to buy tonex would buy it becausecits cheap and that means the amps that they want to play through tonex they dont own them so as a result people who are going to buy tonex are going to download the amp modelled by someone else. So all those points about buying a capture device and buying a PC with Nvidia, to me sound irrelevant.
