I think maybe I'm too late to the party to get a reply here but 2 things 1) awesome video. I'm new to miniature painting and am having a great time being totally crap and just trying things out.. ive been having real trouble with my glazing being all kind of patchy and chalky and rough looking and I'm almost certain now that its due to excessive paint on the brush. 2 and this is the question) if you always want to use the darker of the two colours you're blending then am I wrong to be basecoating in a dark colour and then utilising lighter mixes to then glaze in highlights? Your comment there sort of suggests that I ought to base in a light colour and then try to glaze in shadows, though I haven't seen a single painter doing that yet.. whats your advice on that? Thanks for the content man 😁
@@milkflavour82 Thank you for the kind words! You can start from a darker base and then glaze the highlights on and most people, as you said, do it. I just think it's easier to understand glazing when done with a darker color as it's easier for the painter to understand what went wrong. Once you know how to do it, you can do it from light to dark or dark to light.

Through trial and error, I had already realized that the most important fact is indeed the amount of paint, which is why in my head I sometimes call glazes 'wet brushing', but it's great to see a more concise and detailed explanation. In fact, this guide is useful not just for miniature painters but painters in general. I have watched many tutorials where glazing in traditional painting is explained yet they fail to mention (or at least show) that it's not just about dilution per se. Great work.

I never achieved a nice smooth transition with glazing and most of the time I was just making my models look like shit, never understood why. Now I understand how many things I did wrong. This is truly the best and most understandable guide I have watched in a while. Absolute game changer. 4 years late to this video, and its still solid stuff. All the other videos I've found have just been "yeah, you know, do a glaze" without explaining exactly *how* or *what*.

Out of all the guides, tutorials, whatever on RUclips; You are the most concise, detail-oriented, and specific. You don't gloss over things that people new to the hobby aren't going to consider. It's very easy for someone who has been painting for a long time to omit things because a lot of it comes as second nature. They don't intend to do it, it's just not something they consider consciously. You break down all of these things. Not just on this video either. All of them. Hands down one of the best teachers in miniature painting, period.

Up until this last weekend I had never tried glazing because it looked a bit overwhelming and I was focusing on other things to improve. I've been back to painting and taking it more seriously for the last 2 years, so I thought I needed to try glazing already. And I tell you... I've watched a ton of videos, from people just painting and actual tutorials on glazing and blending. This is by far the most complete I've seen so far (and I've seen it after I tried glazing for the first time) and I was fucking up exactly on the quantity of paint on my brush. Thanks man, thanks a lot. This has helped immensely. I'm gonna redo the horns I was painting and try again following your tips. :)

I appreciate you take time to explain "how" , "why" and "what could go wrong" and, moreover, you explain it simply and clearly with some meaningful sentences ("bring the black home" or "glaze is like a wet dry brush") without fancy RUclips effects or try to show your talent (man.. You paint your nails lol) ! PS : and video quality is good enough to allow us to see something... Which is not always the case on many other good teachers!

First off, thank you for the videos! I've only just come across them and the way you describe your method and the underpinnings in the techniques is by far the best I've seen. I could never quite get why my glazes weren't working. I just kept diluting the paint but it was the volume on the brush. No one has ever really gone into it in that much depth. Another thing that I loved was about the consistency of paint. When people say "like milk" it just doesn't mean anything. Using your nail was so simple and clear, genius! So good! Thank you so much!
Thank you! What you said is the reason why I made this video. The "milk" thing and the lack of explaination of paint volume on the brush from most videos made glazing unnecessarely confusing to learn, I wanted to try to chip in and attempt to bring some clarity.
Man, I'm pretty new to all this and, Im just finally starting to kick out some minis that I can stand to look at. The biggest things I'm missing right now, in my opinion, are shadowing/contrast and highlighting. The last few I've worked on look like, literally what a well painted miniature looks like with no depth. No highlighting, no shadow, no contrast. I've been super intrigued by non metallic metal and glazing to get nice transitions since I started, but figured I should just focus on some easier stuff, better fundamentals first. Anyway, long story long, I started working towards glazing and NMM recently, and have really been struggling with it. This is the first thing I've seen/read/heard, that made me understand, that I havent been using glazes, I haven't actually used a a legit glaze yet. Just slightly more diluted layers. Can't wait to jump back in. Thank you

It's funny to hear 'drybrushing with a glaze'. Not sure if I heard that before in some random video and it stuck into my subconscious or I accidentally discovered it myself. You see, once I left paint overnight on the wet palette and the next day it got to perfect glazing consistency. I returned to my NMM job on sword and figured "hey this is working much smoother now, I can 'drybrush' with this thing and get easier blends"
Your guides and your instructions are so very underrated! You should have so many more likes and subscribers!! Love the direct format, with just the right length of time for these videos! This is such a good resource for beginners and intermediate painters (like myself!).
Great content, but just a thing with the audio it sounds like your audio processing is gating way too strongly which is kinda distracting and makes it a little hard to listen to because the audio keeps cutting in and out. It sounds like you're using a "noise remover" or "noise reducer" effect in whatever program you use for audio and your settings are either too harsh on the reduction or not smooth enough on the attack/delay. I'd say to maybe look into dynamic range compression or a subtle (
there is a gate and I feel like it's not as bad as you said. If I were to have it a bit more lenient it would pick up a lot of background noise which I really don't want to. The volume is low, tho. So I will definitely increase it next time. Thank you for the feedback!
@@MiniaturesDen Personally I found the volume fine, but then again I'm an habitual earphone user so that could be something. The gating was definitely really noticeable to me, but again I'm an earphone user and a musician who's dabbled in audio-tech work at uni so it could just be more sensitive ears. Even still, it's worth noting that gating alone is never a great way of noise reduction because it causes the audio to completely cut out if set too harshly, a gentle high pass set to around 120HZ to remove the background low hisses (maybe a low pass if there's lots of high frequency hissing) then some dynamic range compression to homogenise the sound and then a little EQ to bring up the vocal frequencies will do you worlds better than gating ever could at cleaning up some audio.
@@AlexFry01 All of the technical things you just said mean nothing to me xD I'm a dude that paints puppets, I can barely turn on my PC without blowing it up. I'll have to look all of these things up and figure out if I can manage to modify them in my OBS.

Finally someone that can both Do and Teach! Thank you! Now please, please explain how to achieve smooth glaces when speedpainting, or just tell us this is not something you do on 150 clanrats, if that is the case.
I wouldn't do it on 150 clanrats. If I tired Insanity would take me after the 20th. I would use an airbrush in that care or even contrast paints. This kind of glazing technique is more akin to single models/kill teams/warcry/skirmish games as it takes a little bit (even when done in a speedpainting kind of way)

Great content, but just a thing with the audio it sounds like your audio processing is gating way too strongly which is kinda distracting and makes it a little hard to listen to because the audio keeps cutting in and out. It sounds like you're using a "noise remover" or "noise reducer" effect in whatever program you use for audio and your settings are either too harsh on the reduction or not smooth enough on the attack/delay. I'd say to maybe look into dynamic range compression or a subtle (
there is a gate and I feel like it's not as bad as you said. If I were to have it a bit more lenient it would pick up a lot of background noise which I really don't want to. The volume is low, tho. So I will definitely increase it next time. Thank you for the feedback!
@@MiniaturesDen Personally I found the volume fine, but then again I'm an habitual earphone user so that could be something. The gating was definitely really noticeable to me, but again I'm an earphone user and a musician who's dabbled in audio-tech work at uni so it could just be more sensitive ears. Even still, it's worth noting that gating alone is never a great way of noise reduction because it causes the audio to completely cut out if set too harshly, a gentle high pass set to around 120HZ to remove the background low hisses (maybe a low pass if there's lots of high frequency hissing) then some dynamic range compression to homogenise the sound and then a little EQ to bring up the vocal frequencies will do you worlds better than gating ever could at cleaning up some audio.
@@AlexFry01 All of the technical things you just said mean nothing to me xD I'm a dude that paints puppets, I can barely turn on my PC without blowing it up. I'll have to look all of these things up and figure out if I can manage to modify them in my OBS.

Finally someone that can both Do and Teach! Thank you! Now please, please explain how to achieve smooth glaces when speedpainting, or just tell us this is not something you do on 150 clanrats, if that is the case.
I wouldn't do it on 150 clanrats. If I tired Insanity would take me after the 20th. I would use an airbrush in that care or even contrast paints. This kind of glazing technique is more akin to single models/kill teams/warcry/skirmish games as it takes a little bit (even when done in a speedpainting kind of way)
But if you were forced to do it, didn't have an airbrush or access to contrast paints, how would you approach it?
Going insane is still an option
