    Hunted in a blind for the first time last year. Biggest lesson I learned was to be off the ground. I live and hunt in SK so that is usually mid to late Nov for me. Two of my sits were around -30c and, hoo boy, no matter how many heat packs I had in my boots I was still cold. This year I got a larger blind that I will be able to have a proper chair in. I'll be hauling out some insulated mats to put around the base to hopefully cut the bite of the cold coming straight from the ground. Amoung other things. Also, going to take out my deer hide to put on my seat.
    Never shot anything from my blind but did let a young buck walk. It was a totally new and exciting experience compared to the usual road hunting I have grown up on.

    I am disabled and have been since 1997. But I have found if I purchase cheap Walmart gear I have to replace it6 times as fast as quality gear. I still have my original Scent Loc camos and Road Trip camos that are now 18 years old. Still in great shape. H2O Blaze Camos from Gander Mountain as well 18 years old and still functioning as new. And they cost me $450 each set from 1998 to 2000. I just wore out my LaCourse boots after 16 years. And I hunt every day until my tags all filled in both Ohio and Michigan. You get what you pay for. Sitka will be my next purchase. I already have an early season Celsius jacket & ESW pants. Into them for less than $400 with a lifetime warranty for workmanship. Show me any other clothes that offer that. You spend $1000 on a bow and think nothing of it. Yet you'll spend $700 on a rifle and put $50 scope on it 10 times. Nice info, great video. For the hunter, not the weekend wanna be

      Rick that is an outstanding comment..."for the hunter", which is so true. Work hard, play hard and hunt hard...and you will wear out cheap clothes and gear several times over high quality. Great couple of SITKA items that you have! Pretty nice when you can buy stuff and know it will last a lifetime, let alone fit the way that it should and be specifically built for bowhunters!

      Army wet weather gear is noisy as hell, though. I do like the 7 layer suit that they are issuing now. Thin base layer, really good waffle mid weight, then they have a bunch of other crap to make you look like a 5 yr old in a snow suit....but the 2 base layers under quality hunting outerwear is phenomenal.
      Also, I like wearing a pair of insulated Jean's under my bibs to keep my legs quite a bit warmer. I have horrible circulation and my legs and feet get very cold easily, so I usually have twice as many layers on my lower half as I do my upper.

    My brother got me hooked on Sitka, I was a Sitka hater because it was so expensive. He let me try on his fanatic vest and I fell in love with it. So I went to the local Sitka dealer and noticed that the fanatic vest my brother had was the older style and the new stuff had the Berber fleece on the outside and I was worried about all the burrs sticking to it. So picked up a new old style fanatic vest on eBay in elevated forest. And piece by piece my collection has grown. I really like the stratus jacket and pants. So versitile for warm weather and great for when it starts to get cold. I picked up the incinerator jacket and I am pretty much set for when it gets nasty out. I want to get the matching bibs but I have a pair of first lite sanctuary bibs that are so warm that I have worked perfectly in -10° with a -20° wind chill. Maybe some day I will get them but for now I don't care if I don't match. But I am a Sitka believer now and I won't hunt with nothing else.

      The information is for the masses...that is what matters. Also, I expect my hunting clothes to last decades....so a few extra dollars per hunting month spent on gear to last a lifetime...heck, I can't affird NOT to buy quality gear.
      Again tho...the information is for th masses...same concepts, same strategies...even in lower quality gear ;) Thst like saying i shoukkd hunt with a cheap gun, cheap bow, cheap flashlight, cheap optics...just to relate to the masses? Well I call I priority. For the same folks that wine about buying top quality hunting gear...I'd likr to see their truck, their boat, their bowling league score, their whatever...it's all about priority in life brother, and to me buying gear rhat lasts a lifetime instead of a few years...IS for the masses who have to be wise with what they do spend money on ;)
      This channel is about high level whitetail strategy...could practice the same techniques naked if you want, but theybare still the same strategies. Just colder

    Boot blankets are extremely effective. The new, large, adhesive, chemical body warmers are great. I typically put one over each kidney and then push down with my arms.
    I'll disagree about your policy of walking in with all your clothes. I know it is a pain, but it is so much more comfortable to start out slightly cold (remove layers), heat up when walking in without sweating like crazy ,and then put your layers on.
    If you are walking a mile uphill with a stand on your back, then I just don't think it is feasible to not remove layers. I typically start with my base and outer layer only and then put on middle layers right before entering the stand.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 лет назад

      Good points! Unfortunately leaving the scent at the base of the stand it takes to change is unacceptable...along with the time it takes, and the noise...either on the ground or in the stand. So for decades I've used quality, moisture wicking layers and climb right into my stand ready to hunt. And shoot a lot of mature bucks 😉 I just couldn't ever accept the scent, time or noise it takes to change at the stand...or accept it from anyone else that hunts with me. Too small of parcels...too high pressure of hunting. Kind of a non negotiable way that I hunt...hope that makes sense!
      I just go in lightweight, no pack...climb into a tree and shoot bucks. Very no frills, low hassle process...

    • @MrShysterme
      @MrShysterme 5 лет назад

      @@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 A lot of public land hunters can't leave stands in the woods and have to walk in a good ways (up hills in my case) with a stand, sticks, and few other things. I can't have a set up waiting for me. If I walked 1.5 miles with all my clothes on with all my gear, then I'd be a mess. I don't care what clothing I had one. I have some Sitka and also many pieces of quality gear (merino wool wicking base layers from famous hiking gear companies etc) and although good, they just can't deal with a heavy downpour of sweat from me. Because I run and gun and have to set up anyways (stick and stands), then I'm not able to sneak in and just climb up. So, getting set up at the base of the tree adds a minor bit to a not great situation to begin with! Because I'm going to spend 15 minutes getting set up and climbing anyway.
      I typically walk in with my base layer and polar fleece on top. Then at base of tree, before putting on safety harness, I throw on a goose down vest and then my wool coat and slap a few chemical warmers on. This allows me to be overdressed in the stand somewhat.

    I have the Sitka Incinerator gear. Much better overall i think personally. When your walking in unzip the pants on your bibs and unzip your coat and vents. You won't get hot and will be comfortable. Wait 10 mins to cool down and then zip up zippers. Also keeps scent down for me. Good Video

    I understand you are pro staffed by sitka, and that they make good gear, but do you still prefer it over scentlok? Scentlok (as long as properly treated) helps cover your scent more than any other hunting clothes I know of and is very comfortable.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 лет назад

      Good Question! I sure do. In fact I believe the best form of scent control is stand location and keeping your access routes free from scent...which can be accomplished through spraying down and clean clothes.
      What I do is to try and choose the best gear...and then I contact them for a partnership. I then try to stay with them for life. It took me 2 years for Vortex, for example...but I thought they were the best and best fit, so I didn't pursue another optics company. I don't want to be locked into a partnership wishing I was using another brand...so I would rather not have a partnership for a particular type of gear, then get locked into low quality. That's why I chose Sitka...I thought they were the best. Same with family tradition treestands. Heck even Mathews... I've shot Mathews exclusively since 1992.
      I hope that makes sense but the quality level is so high, they charge such a high price and get it. I really believe to be the best I can buy...

      I've used the HBS...solid product! Also, well less than a grand for SITKA heavyweight fanatic and bibs. Just need to be smart layering and it keeps you very warm. However...
      I own a HBS and haven't used it since using SITKA. There is a HUGE difference using clothing like SITKA that is specifically designed for bowhunting. I do not miss my HBS at all, and even my wife who is not sponsored...not filmed...not promoted in any way, chooses her SITKA over the HBS. And she has hunted roughly 45 times since mid September and still counting, in all kinds of conditions, mostly treestand, countless teens to 20s mornings after hiking 20-30 minutes uphill into a stand. In fact I wouldn't want her to use a HBS in the treestand because as an experienced hunter, her chance of getting a shot off without a deer seeing her with her crossbow would be greatly diminished. And that has nothing to do with SITKA vs HBS...just a fact. HBS is a good product...but it certainly isn't the best for bowhunting and treestand, if you can afford spending $800-$900 on quality, bow friendly outerwear.

      Funny, I forgot to mention that I wear Sitka every day. I have the goretex goose down jacket and bibs, not sure if it's the incinerator or fanatic but it's about 7 years old. I live in it. I also have the down insulating layers so I can really pile it on if i need to. It's the best gear i'm aware of but in my opinion there isn't enough layers of anything that can keep me warm while stationary in a tree under say 10 degrees. Nothing can duplicate the air space effect of a blanket, sleeping bag, or HBS. I can also hide in it and text or read without the loss of any fingers. That said, I have never killed a deer in my HBS. Mostly because I wasn't shooting does or small bucks but I have found myself wondering how the hell i could get a shot off if i wanted to. I even passed on deer that i might have shot if i didn't have to make all those moves so I share the concern but i can't see staying warm enough without it?..Anyway, I have two properties in Minnesota that I am ready to invest in some education on if you are interested?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  6 лет назад

      John Martinez can totally understand the budget issue! The one thing I can say about that tho, is that someone should expect their hunting clothes to last for decades...so in the end the cost for extreme quality is more that justified (at least that's a good argument with the spouse :)). But, I did very well for 20 years, wearing my old Cabela's gore-tex/thinsulate/fleece combos that I first started using in the early to mid 90s. I literally wore that camo for over 20 seasons. If someone can find that old stuff used, it is worth it,no matter what the camo! I would have a lot of it for sale myself, but that camo was handed down to my kids and I expect them to use it for several decades themselves if they want to.
      I also heavily relied on heavy fleece windstopper vest and jacket layers as well....wearing a vest almost every time I hunted. Heat packs are incredible and if nothing else, heavyweight high quality base and ling John layers are critical!

      Buy the best "you" can afford. When I started I bought thin layers X-Large from Kmart and put them on over my everyday winter jacket and pants, my boots were "pleather". That's the great thing about this sport, you can get started with very little. As your passion grows and as your income allows...upgrade here and there. I have made a life time upgrading gear. It does not happen over night.

It can be purchased at Dicks sporing goods or other sporting goods outlets. It comes in different flavors...I like blackberry the best...and is right around 23 carbs and 100 calories. I use it often when designing lands too, because my sugar consistently drops to below 90 in the afternoon with a lot of walking - same when hunting. I have had a few lows in the deer stand and I just take a Gu and enjoy the hunt! It of course wakes me up a bit too. Good luck with your diabetes!

      miwhitetailhunt What do you think of the noise of the IWOM? I haven't used one before, but have had some serious whitetail nut buddies not wear theirs due to the noise in the stand...one even tied an old shirt to the tree trunk so it quieted it down from the fabric rubbing up against the tree. What have you found? Like I said....haven't used it myself so just going by what others have said. But I can't stand noise in any thing...I've even had a squeaky boot I got rid of for hunting. Squeaked at every step, lol

    • @miwhitetailhunt
      @miwhitetailhunt 6 лет назад +1

      I have had deer 15 yards on dead silent cold mornings, and they don't notice the type of muffled sounds the suit makes. Now if you rub up against a tree without some sort of barrier, it will no doubt make enough noise to alert deer. Some other down sides to this suit that come to mind is washing can be a chore, and weighs what seems to be 90 pounds when fully soaked. One other possible down side is the sleeves are slightly bulky, so an arm guard was needed. What works for me might not be everyones solution, but it makes being out on those crazy days a breeze.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  6 лет назад

      miwhitetailhunt thanks for that! I have been wondering. I do like the Sitka because I can stay warm in bitter temps and it is made with bowhunters in mind. I have a HBS and with my Sitka system I don't need it for the warmth now, bit my feet are always a concern with having to wear big And bulky boots to climb uphill for 40 minutes to some of my stands on the lands I hunt.
      Hey bottom line...a lot of real high quality clothing out there!! As a freezing MI teen standing on a branch in the 80s and hunting to near hypothermia, all this stuff is absolutely incredible and I am very thankful for what I have been able to upgrade to over the years!

    The idea that "you get what you pay for" is a fallacy. People who say that also overuse the statement of "it is what it is", these are statements that people make hoping to not really discuss the issue. Sitka gear is fantastic, yes, but it is the most expensive gear on the market. The core principles that should be focused on is the best policies for dressing warm in cold weather hunts. For me, cold is one thing but where I am in Ohio, I deal with a lot of wind which is unpredictable, especially if it is swirling. Anyway, defending the fact that you are brand dependent is a pretty big turn off, stick to what you obviously know, hunting in cold weather, don't bash people over the head with insulting comments like "you get what you pay for" and "good luck". My coveralls are the most expensive item ($125 on sale) that I own and they have saved me big time, I wear nice boots but they were $100 on sale and I put toasty toes between my layers of wool socks and I do just fine. Anyway, don't defend brand dependency, a lot of us have hunted for a long time and for me personally almost always in a tree stand so we know what we're doing but appreciate seeing people's take, like yours. It was a well-made video, certainly took a lot of production (which also costs a lot of money by the way) and I appreciate your efforts to educate.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 лет назад

      Unfortunately I can't agree with you. "You get what you pay for" is a smart principal to teach your kids and grandkids about. That's a quality, tried and true life rule. For example if you put a 700 hunting out for next to a $200 outfit and told hunters to pick one not knowing th notice...they would choose the $700 the vast majority of the time. Why? Better materials, better fit, better functionality, lighter weight...that's where, you get what you pay for. That's the same with trucks, boats, lawnmowers and optics. "It is what it is" is just a worn out meaningless saying.
      Also, apologize big that comes off as condescending or outing someone down, but I believe wholeheartedly in that you get what you pay for, I believe Sitka has the best hunting clothes or I wouldn't use them...and I make zero apologies about making that call online. That's also why I use every other product that I use...I think that they are the best, and you are going to pay to use the best.
      I was taught that it is better to pay more once...than pay a little but 3 times. Hence...why I believe in, practice and teach, "you get what you pay for".

      As someone who has hunted below zero temps for over 30 years...I won't hunt without my handwarmer tube and thin gloves. 2 large heat packs and I'm good for the worst MI/WI Winter can throw my way, sitting 20' up and facing the winds. I also use it to carry my phone, flashlight, grunt rube, etc. I have been hunting with one since the 80s...and hunt with it every single day of the season.
      Try it! I often wear very warm mittens or gloves to the stand...and then bury those inside my clothes to keep them warm for the walk out. But on stand it's the tube...

I was going to get a a pair of boot blankets to wear but I may just get a pair of belkins with inserts big enough for two pair of socks. I feel that if i have to buy more crap to make the gear do what it's advertised to do then that gear isn't worth spending money on. I'm a firm believer in 100% merino wool on everything but you do need a layer of something that'll stop wind. i'm not complete in my set yet but this video gave me some ideas. I'll be hitting up greywolfwoolens for their wool line of clothing, 100% virgin wool and made to order in the US. It ain't cheap but cheaper than Sitka.

      Jad, Been there and done that with cheaper clothes too...I think I've hit quite a few degrees colder than -13 Fahrenheit (roughly -20 to -25), and there is very, very little clothing that will keep you alive in a bow stand at those temps...let alone comfortable. When your knees and elbows get cold because the insiluation is stretched over them...it's cold! I've actually come in from a morning hunt and it had warmed up to -12 Fahrenheit...actually temps I don't enjoy hunting in, lol. But even then I wasn't wearing Sitka and I was still wearing over $1500 in gear. And that stuff wasn't as warm as my Sitka.

Scouting, setting up and working hard creates a lot of luck ;) That's the beauty of hunting...the amount of potential success is directly parallel to the amount of work you enjoy putting into your passion. Just because someone doesn't put a lot of work in does put a lot of work in, doesn't mean there way is the best feom either angle. However, for those that want to experience quality herds and hunts on a consistent basis...public or private land; this is the channel for them ;) There are plenty of channels for purely entertainment...this channel is for those that want to work hard and get a find a higher level of results. That's not trouble...that's called a passion and a way of life. Enjoy either way though!

      The working guy can't afford to by gear that won't last for decades 😉 great hunting gear lasts a lifetime. heck, I know guys that spend more on bowling leagues, their boat, their ATV...than buying quality hunting clothes. All about priorities...I choose to be stuff that lasts, whatever that stuff may be.

    Staying warm = to having upwards of 2k for just one set up clothes. Yeah it's good stuff but marketed to the wealthy or the nuts who max out their CC. I suppose I could I afford it but 500 bucks for a pair of pants is crazy. I'm a raised Micigan boy as well. It's all about layering with proper materials.

      For clothes that you buy to last decades...you certainly get what you pay for. I've bought the best since I was in my terms and had zero money...knowing it would last longer. It's an investment and all about priorities.
      I see many folks that don't want to fish out money for what they live ..yet have a nice truck or nice home or nice boat or nice UTV or 36 weeks of bowling league or 2 packs of cigs per day or a 6 pack of beer a day...whatever. For something that helps to create memories to last a lifetime and lasts for decades, it is amazing how some refuse to buy the best....or prioritize the best.
