Actually, finding your lure using this method is nearly impossible. The mounting angle to get away from the motor head causes the directions to get a bit skewed the further you cast. It drives me crazy.
I would not mount it on the trolling motor shaft. If your motor has location lock, the motor will be sweeping left and right as it tries to hold the boat's position. As a result, you lose contact with the target.
