I've been wanting an obsession telescope for a minute. But these have been catching my eye.. I'm looking into getting the 16" either with push too or go to. Haven't decided if I want to drop almost as much on the go to system as the scope itself..
I’ve seen one of these before. They are the ultimate in large, lightweight, portable optics. My main concern, living in the American southwest, is your need some kind of tube shroud that covers all the way to the mirror. Anybody who has been out in the American west will concur that winds can come out of no where late at night and blow dust and even sand onto your optics. The down side of the shroud is it makes the scope a big sail that will invariably be blown about by the wind. If you can surround your scope in some kind of structure to protect from wind, it would be perfect, but kind of defeats the purpose of building it light weight.
Jonathan Hansen yep. Wind can be an issue on these scopes for sure. I do notice on my Obsession UC that the wind has to be pretty high to effect it much. The sand and dust thing is always a concern for sure.
I was very happy to see at this year's Texas Star Party, an increase in Vendor attendance in the pavilion. Even though the internet has changed to way that we look for and buy our astronomical equipment, I do look forward to seeing their merchandise in person. I did buy a couple of items.
Walter G thanks for watching!! I’m pretty sure that’s the azimuth encoder. I think it looks green due to the light coming thru the soda lime glass. Or maybe there was green tape on it? 😂
Great job DSD keep them coming. Long term I am seriously considering purchasing a 40" f4 - f5 Hubble Optics mirror as they're really the only 40" range mirror maker that's financially feasible for me. I can build the rest myself.
@@DeepSkyDude Ha! no worries - journey of a thousand miles begins with first step. It's going to take a few years to save enough coin although you never know when you begin when an unexpected windfall may push you over the line quicker. I have a 16", 18", 20", 20" binodob and a 28" (I know I just can't help myself) so the 40 will round out the "light" bucket list. I'm keeping a promise to a young me I made 4 decades ago reading Astronomy magazine in remote outback Australia dreaming over adverts for 29" Odyssey dobs. For your interest and to tempt you heh, heh, I've seen quotes range from @ US $21k to $31k for Hubble 40" mirrors depending on f5-3.3 ratio and plate glass or pyrex. Clear skies!
@@bb001a I have seen your clips on youtube and subscribed but i didnt realise you were Australian, i grew up in nw NSW myself and i am in the process of purchasing a hubble optics scope after enjoying a 10 inch dob for the last year. Good luck with it. DK
@@DeepSkyDude I can confirm this, have owned a UL24 for last couple years and regularly use it for outreach and personal viewing. I don't find it "too large that it never gets used" and I carry it around in an Audi wagon (car, not even an SUV). Hatchback is a must though. But easy setup, never disappoints, love it! I think it's the largest ultralight out there, and not unreasonably heavy when used w/ wheel barrow handles and ramps. I'm short (5',7") and throw it around just fine.
Can someone please explain the purpose of the shroud on these scopes? I know the purpose in theory, block light, but with the primary and secondary mirrors exposed any light it blocked would hit the mirrors and thus make it pointless. This is clearly a dark site only scope so why the shroud?
Are you interested in large aperture dobsonians? This one may be a good option for you.

LanceMan same here. The few years before this one were light on vendors so I’m very happy to see more back on site. Camera Concepts was great.
3.6, as I recall. Lovely.
Yeah, it's pretty fast. I'm hoping to get to look thru one someday.
Do you know what the small green cylinder thing is used for under the primary mirror at 1:43 min Thanks for the video!

Keep me updated on your progress!! That sounds like an interesting process. A 40 inch dob is a whole lotta scope!! 😂

Wow!!! That’s quite a fleet of scopes!! I can’t wait to make my way down under. It’s been a lifelong goal. 😎

Great video!
Thanks so much!
Wow that is an awesome scope, I wish I had one
Carolina Sky Astronomy yeah this one would be excellent for some outreach being so easy to move around.

The whole assembly should be covered from main to focused. I think this is just to show main mirror assembly.
If you could just have that delivered, that'd be greeeaaaat. :)
Bob Snyder Sure thing!! Hopefully they’ll send me one of their CDK’s and I can do a full review on one. 🤞😂
