@@mikessa1000It sort-of works as a visual symbol for death in a vacuum; but it is pretty jarring when movies show a character’s eyeballs instantly freeze solid like they were dunked in liquid nitrogen only to recover instantly with no permanent injury once they are rescued.
A perfect vacuum isn’t something the vast majority of people will ever experience firsthand but surely everybody knows what frostbite is.

If you're in space without a spacesuit, you'll become a space fossil
There's a scene in The Expanse where a character intentionally decides to go out of the spacecraft in order to escape someone and the show gets that entirely correct, unlike most space-based entertainment. The character stays outside for less than half a minute before finding an alternate route indoors and while disoriented, is fine.
Wait can you expand on this? lol. So on "The Expanse" a person exits a spacecraft WITH NO PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT and just re-enters through another door? I gotta watch this shit lmao
oh yes. it is definitely one of the later episodes, probably the last season. but it's scientifically sound. the expanse is known for trying to play within the reasonableness rules of science fiction. to their credit also, the character definitely is a trained scientist who seems to be aware this will not 100% be fatal but is just very risky. glad they showed it to make people wonder. far better than most shows that make it seem like space just wants to kill you--which space definitely does--but space also wants to give you a few seconds headstart in the fight. @@kushclarkkent6669
@@kushclarkkent6669She was essentially escaping a ship she was held captive in. She took a calculated leap that traumatises her afterwards. Space is a running antagonist in the show. It's always there ready to kill off characters.
I loved that scene, it was amazing.

In Season 5/Book 5 of the Expanse a character barely survives a brief spacewalk without a suit and the toll it takes on their body is quite medically accurate.

The worst part of this are those agonizing 15 seconds of full conscious awareness about what’s happening & no ability to stop it. Our brain perceives time differently in a life & death situation, 15 seconds become slow torture. Sounds like the best response would be to relax into it & enjoy the scenery.

Ice forming over skin isn't unrealistic as in space interesting things happen with water.
It will spontaneously evaporate, as there's no pressure holding it together, and it'll steal heat from its surroundings to jump the gap from liquid to gas, freezing the water nearby that hasn't boiled off of Starlord's toasty body.
And him being toasty would accelerate the surface freezing effect as his sweat would be able to rob more of his skin of heat before it f*cked off into the void.

Correction, you don’t necessarily swell up, everything in the body is kept under pressure by the solids and liquids in the body, when water is boiled at a lower pressure it is actually the most energetic water molecules that comes water vapour but since its in the body its kept under pressure by the surrounding liquids and solids in the body it won’t swell necessarily rather it would be like a release of gases escaping out of your orifices. You would feeling your saliva boiling tho. You also have up to 90 seconds to be recovered before permanent damage is made to the body.
Dang that's crazy, 90 seconds is a long time, and 15 seconds is a long time to feel your body dying and staying conscious

Your blood can't pressurize, bec the vessels are already pressurized, so unless you cut yourself, you won't expand. Also there won't be any boiling bec space is a vacuum not a vacuum pump. The only reason water "boils" is because the pump in a chamber is trying to push air from the water, making it "boil". But bec space is already a vacuum this doesn't happen. But if you where in a manmade vacuum chamber and the pump was on....yeah that sucks.
