- It's time for another steam whistle collection.
This one features 33 Locomotives from across the British Isles.
From LMS Hooters to Three Note Chimes, I hope you enjoy my selection.
This is actually incredible. American train whistles are ridiculously loud and thunderous but the British whistles sound almost like the calls of birds.
If those birds weighed 50+ tonnes, couldn't fly and could fit birds inside their vocals 😂
Well the British whistles just sound kind of weak and pathetic. Although, I do definitely love the a4 pacific's whistles. American whistles sound like what their engines sound like, big, mean, lean machines, thousands of pounds of moving steel, not some cherry-eyed songbird. but each to their own I guess.

I love American steam whistles for their throaty robust sound. They're very imposing. But there's something so beautifully haunting about British whistles that I can't get enough of 😍

The higher pitch travels better.
Not a fan of the higher pitched. Having heard both *at night in the distance* the American whistles evoke a deep erie sense and a hint of nostalgia I don't get with the British whistles. Not to mention the sheer "get the hell out of my way" of the deeper whistles
As an American, I've always much preferred the sound of UK steam whistles, I don't know if it's the tone or the greater variety. There's just something about them..

The American whistles sound so angry and aggressive.. The British ones sound more elegant in my opinion.
МАТЬ-РОССИЯ It’s like the difference in appearances of steam locomotives between the 2 countries. The Americans tend to be utilitarian with their plumbing exposed; the British are streamlined and painted.
Hooters, whether American or British, will always send chills up your spine. But I prefer British hooters over American hooters (N&W 1218 makes an exception, i'll never get tired of listening to that beast)

It does, as I’m fairly certain that 70000 (the loco responsible for that whistle) was used for the Hogwarts express’s whistle, however not used for the actual engine, 5972 olton hall was used, although 34027 taw valley was considered as an option
There's something beautiful about 6:08. The picturesque view of fields on rolling hills, with the sound of the whistle of a train coming near.
Pure beauty.
It's like singing banshees in a kitchen full of boiling kettles!!!! So many wonderful whistles!!!

Actually this A4 was the "Union of South Africa". Spencer would be LNER A4 Pacific "Silver Fox" or "Silver Link" which ran the A4's native Silver Jubilee Route
0:11 & 3:04: If it was just the audio without the accompanying videos, I would have guessed they were American locomotives.

All British locos and the audio hasn't been changed.
@@04clemea I know. The whistles are just similar to typical American ones. So if I were to hear them in a "name that whistle" quiz, I would have guessed they were from the U.S.
Hooter Whistle
3:04 is 43106 and resides at the severn valley railway. When I first heard it I assumed it was the visiting 2253 Omaha until i turned around.

For any non Brits in the comments each railway company had its own whistle tone.

@@Basinrails exactly. Try comparing a Southern Princeton 3 chime and a L&N 3 chime. They have very different tones.

I have always loved trains, especially British and American trains. Back in 2020, I bought a Spectrum HO scale dcc/sound 4-6-0 and reprogrammed the decoder so that instead of a Nathan 5 chime it has a LNER a4 chime whistle.
In North America the whistles are deep and below but in the UK it's like a little girl screaming! These whistles almost sound like they came from another planet!
ibishu pigeon. That’s because Americans want everything bigger to be “better” when in reality our steam engines where faster and more efficient.
Just remember that this is where your steam engines whistles originated.
And they do the job.
Ollie's Branchline actually, America’s steam locomotives are very efficient, take a look at the 844. It can go up to 120mph but can also maintain a stable speed of around 70 pulling around 4 million pounds. You guys may have the faster trains, but ours are stronger. I love British steam, I always will. But just appreciate American steam as well.

Provided that memory serves correctly, LMS Black Fives, Coronations, Princess Royals, Jubilees, and Royal Scots all have very similar sounding whistles to the Norfolk And Western's hooters.

Shame the that the USA have a much better whistle they sound more like they mean it when they pull it, louder deeper and will even scare the ghost away its so haunting
USA has a worse whistle tbh. Also, why would you comment that here? All of their whistles sound the same, and are drab/boring.
@@bennickss I would say that most of these whistles sound high pitched and annoying to me. The deep, multi-chime american whistles have a sense of power and authority with their deep rumble that you have to experience in person to fully appreciate. Plus they are much easier on the ears.

And yet they’re louder? Plus there are several engines which use chime whistles, for example the A4 and Tornado.
@@bennickss You seem confused? Yes. A deep whistle does not hurt your ears. A 6 in chime whistle on 150 psi is much more bearable to listen to than a 2 in whistle on 20 psi. With the deep whistles you just feel the vibrations through your whole body. Short bell, high pitch whistles are what hurt the ears, especially plain bell whistles.
@@bennickss And yes I realize that there are some engines that use chimes, but the majority of those shown here are plain bell whistles, which I do not enjoy as much. A chime is a much more melodious sound.

TTTE reference? If so, that's my childhood you're talking about it. Sniff! I miss my Thomas so bad, now that Mattel ruined it. Even three year olds who knew CGI TTTE miss pre-AEG Thomas. What about when Thomas accused Gordon of "Playing tank engine?" because he had to pull his train backwards? Btw, TTTE's the only reason I ever believed in tank engines I'm sure. Tank engines never got too popular in my country, but I know Thomas has a real basis, even if he's just a toy/character. I know that basis even, due to my nostalgia. That raging case of nostalgia I got a few months ago took me to the wikia and I found out the characters usually got a real basis.

More like “Hold your wagons!” That’s what they call cars in the UK. The boxcars (or whatever they call them) they have over there are much smaller compared to the ones you’d see in North America and Mexico. Not to mention Canada.
