Just yesterday at a park I found tons of these plants. But I didn’t think much of them until I saw the ground which had these brilliant orange candy-like looking pods, I didn’t know at that time what they were! I loved the color so I picked up 5 from the ground and three pods. I noticed the pods were different and now I know why! Thanks for taking the time to explain these for us!!
Was taking these seeds and three cones illegal? It was in a free admission park, maintained by city or county. What would the landscapers do when they come to clean up the area with at least 100+ seeds. I noticed cars slowly driving through park, yet not one if the passengers noticed (or appreciated) these orange embryonic seeds. I understand they need to dry on a newspaper, then when they are all shriveled up, I use paper towel (and wear gloves) to rub or scrape off the skin which, has formed. Then I wait a couple days before I plant them. 6 weeks I should see it growing. I understand this is a slow growing plant and can take up to 4 or 5 years before it is established or matured. I’ve also learned that one can cut the seed after it has dried, place it in water vs removing skin and waiting 2 more days before planting
Thank you so much for explaining that Steven! I just bought a coontie plant 2 days ago, and I've already spotted my first atala butterfly! My female plant has a cone, and I see you are quite comfortable yanking it off, but should I wait until I see some orange seeds around it? This may be my only chance to grow some and I don't want to pull off a premature cone. Thank you!
Hello, you could upload more videos about this plant, for me is very strange as they are of Guadalajara, Mexico, and 15 of them germinate 4 years, the care as if they were my daughters. Regards.
Thanks for sharing. Doing my best to germinate a few hundred seeds for distribution. Currently have about a hundred coontie ranging from 1/2" thick on the ball to 3" thick. I'd love to find out ways to encourage optimal growth. Please share if you do! I plant most of my coontie in a 2:1 of perlite and soil mix(usually peat moss or potting soil). All of my coontie are potted in plastic pots with 1/2" holes to allow for aeration. I'll treat them with various fertilizers, like miracle grow(as I've heard they love acid) or something like Plant Tone which is an "organic" granular fertilizer with microbes. I recently just read that Coontie pull their nitrogen from microbes... so I've been reading a little on that. Unfortunately I haven't kept consistent with my experiments. Any thoughts?
Jay Go'bah Smithstem. I saw a huge cootie in a wet, boggy area. My one of the largest plants is over by my pond, but its a plastic pond that I only overflow a couple of times a year. Like ten times. All my other ones (all planted at the same time) are neglected and survive all the Florida drought, rain etc are healthy but a third of the size. And haven't fruited. So even thought it's very drought tolerant I believe it likes a lot of water.
Thanks for that. I just found out that my male plant is way in the back but the female got pollinated anyway. Btw, that's the fruit. The seed is inside. But I know you knew that. Now, how do you make bread flour? 😊

UN SALUDO A LOS CURIFEOS :)
Can you do a video on how to germinate coontie seeds. Where and how to plant?

Seems like there is no way to determine sex until they produce a seed pod?

My coontie is sick. Red scales and white "fungus". Does the red scale insect produce a white material on the leaves?
Spray with horticultural oil & or Spinosad.
I think this plant poisoned my dogs when they ate the fruit.
