It is honestly absurd to say that the Reach being able to field the largest armies is rendered inconsequential because of its fields…. Like, what? Anyone attacking would still have to attack their fortified cities and castles and would be doing so at a numerical disadvantage. Natural defenses are a force multiplier; that doesn’t mean your army strength decreases via a negative force multiplier if you don’t have natural defenses. The vast manpower of the Reach would easily be able to outbuild palisades and defensive structures in response to any attacking force, thus generating a defensive force multiplier. An attacking force still generally needs a greater number than a defensive force even when there are no natural defenses. The Reach would also field the largest heavy cavalry and would crush any light cavalry attempts at hit and run. And claiming since the Reach is ‘flanked’ by six neighbors (it is absurd to include the Iron Islands), then this means their large army is also inconsequential is also extremely absurd. Why would all six neighbors start attacking the Reach? Why wouldn’t they attack other places? No crap if the entire realm teams up to attack you then you are at a disadvantage, but this is an extremely poor analysis. The Reach having the largest armies also means that they have a greater potential for attack. Also, the Reach is wealthier than the Westerlands. Saying that Westerlands having a greater GDP per capita means they are wealthier is absurd. By this logic, Luxembourg is wealthier than the USA. Also, I seriously doubt the Westerlands has a true higher gdp per capita; that is, a simple total wealth divided by number of inhabitants might put this number higher, it is simply absurd to think wealth is distributed as such. The Lannisters undoubtedly take more wealth and concentrate to themselves relative to the Reach, because they own all the gold mines. The people in the Reach have a more distributed, and thus superior, system of wealth due to the farm lands and productive lands being spread out You even admit the power structure is more centralized in the Westerlands, meaning the wealth is very likely to be heavily concentrated among the higher nobility and especially so amongst the Lannisters.

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
I'd just clarify that the Crown (Lannisters) is in debt to the Lannisters and the Iron bank, so half of the debt is not concerning for the Crown. Also, in the books the mines did not run dry but the mining operations were halted by Stark raiding.
Great video, one of the reason I love Game of Thrones is because of its detailed and complex history and political situation
a very different and very needed video in the game of thrones youtube videos world
Brilliant! And thanks! Loved it!!! :)
I'm promoting this video with tons of shares! :)
This is nice. I love your videos
What a banging video. Well done.
Next: Lord of the Rings(?) There's only so much to talk about on our real earth
i feel like the earth has way more stories to tell than these fictional universes. Especially if you're willing to dig into the past.
@@lastword8783 Yes the US and the CIA are the modern Lannisters.
That was very very nicely done. You are very talented.
11:25 The Westerlands gold mines running dry are an invention of the tv show. According to George R.R. Martin, the Lannisters are still the richest house in the realm.
Those are two different things.
@@jascrandom9855 The show and the books may be two different things, but the books are the canonical version of events. So, stating information that is only relevant in the show doesn't accurately reflect the geopolitics of Martin's world.
@@derekclinton9438 I was referring to the mines and the Lannister wealth.
The mines running dry doesn't mean that the Lannisters stopped being rich.
Their gold mines are the source of their wealth.
@@derekclinton9438 Their main source. But that doesn't mean their treasury is empty yet.
This was great! :D
Amazing video!
Superb! I enjoyed this a lot! More!
Hahaha, i fell off my chair laughing when i saw this in my feed, i always thought that u only did real-life geopolitics, i dont complain, just, how do i put this….. Unexpected, great vid anyway
Excellent work!
At least he got the prediction correct of Dany's death right.
Haha neo-realism for Westeros. That was amazing Shirvan., you should do Essos next!
Wow! such a good video. Thank you for making this.
Good video, I've wanted to see one that explained this. I won't read the books so this helps a lot.
Wow, interesting to see the geopolitical depth that went into designing this world. Nothing seems far fetched, quite the contrary. Great analysis!
Never expected this
Loved this
You have stolen my heart with this ❤️ thank you !!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this!
new subscriber! I really liked the work you put in, keep it up!
Epic geopolitical analysis of our beloved show! 👌👍👍😏
You rarely do anything on Britain.you should do a video on the geopolitics of the UK. This was a very interesting piece from you BTW.
This was so good!
Hey that's a great change. I love it. Please analise the continent of Essos next!! Although I don't even know if George R R Martins himself knows where it ends.
