Knuckles Chaotix - Sonic Was Always Good

- I have not found a single other person on the internet talk about this game's mechanics in depth. So for once, I actually think I may have a unique take on a Sonic game.
I know I didn't offer much criticism of the game in the video, so I'll throw in here that the level design is pretty unmemorable. In terms of layout, pretty much every single level, no matter the zone, feels identical. There's very little in the way of unique layouts and the level gimmicks don't really add much to each zone. I think the movement manages to be fun enough to carry it, but that is certainly a problem.
This was originally going to be part of another group video covering a few other games, but I had so much to say about this one that its section got too long. So now it gets its own video.
btw, does anyone know what Chaotix is supposed to mean? Is it just supposed to be a play on the word chaotic and the fact that it's for the 32X? Because there is absolutely nothing in the game or even the manuals that refers to a Chaotix in any way. And no, it's not the name of the team of characters. That concept was created for Sonic Heroes. There's no official source that tells us what Chaotix actually refers to in this game. Just a weird thing I've always wondered.

The Knuckles Chaotix special stages walked so the Run trilogy could.... run
I had no idea about the extent of the tether ring’s potential and physics…I’ve beat this game twice and I had no idea about midair holding
Bro the sprites and animations of Knuckles, Espio, and Vector are phenomenal. So expressive
...considering how much everybody talks about the verticality of this game, it kinda seems like this should have gotten ported to the DS.
Just my thought here, probably already obvious but still.
Charmy's flying isn't fun because it's given to you when you select him to play.
Tether flying on the other hand is fun in the same way combos in fighting games are fun, it can only be accomplished with skill, and adds replayability in the form of wanting to push these mechanics to the limit.
The Chaotix Crew were such a good addition to the Sonic universe. Fantastic, colourful and fun characters with great animations. I always enjoyed their story lines in Sonic the Comic. Everyone who lives in the Special Zone seems a little off in the head XD
29:15 Three words: Cool Math Games.
Like if you can relate or don't like if you can relate.
I never got to actually *play* this game, but I have always wanted the 3D-running special stages to make a return. They look cool and your explanation makes them better.
There's a browser game called "Run" with two sequels that's shockingly similar to this game's special stages
Segas choice to not out this on the gems collection is the sole reason most people havent played this game such as I and you
@@randocommando7945💀thats true actually
The Sonic Mania special stages are pretty similar imo
I'm still not exactly sold to a point where I'd concede that the game is great, but I have never even heard or thought of all this tech you can pull off with the tether mechanic. It's really insightful stuff you're bringing to light here.
And in regards to you alternating who's the heavier character in the air, the term you're looking for is "counterweight"; your team mate becomes a counterweight while in the air.
Chaos Ring?
You sure it's not a Chaos Coin?
No. Look at them. They are clearly rings. Coins are obviously the things placed all over the game. How could you possibly make this mistake? Come on now.

Finally, someone had the guts to say it.
I absolutely adore this game & I need a remaster.
Dude your content is actually making me want to give shadow the hedgehog and knuckles chaotic a try I actually like sonic heroes even more now your making me like a lot more sonic games Hopefully you give secret rings the respect it needs
I love the aesthetic of this game.
Bro after playing Sonic Superstar and then playing this game for the first time (on an emulator) is like night and day.
I had fun playing Chaotix, flying around and messing with the controllers and characters and stuff.
Superstar is soulless, visually bland, sounds like a slightly better Sonic 4, and plays like whatever.
People who say Knuckles Chaotix is worse then Sonic Superstar are fundamentally wrong.
The nuances of the tether mechanics are quite impressive, I guess the problem however is that the game never compelled people to master them. The levels are just so empty and unintuitive, with no gimmicks that let you get to grips with the premise. It's simple enough to just exploit the tether to just cheese your way through the game with little strategy at all, when I feel like that's a sort of thing that should be made satisfying and compelling to accomplish.
I remember hearing from a dude who loves ROM hacking the physics in this game are not actually the original physics code but replication WITHOUT the help of Yuji Naka
This is most evident in slope jumping only working when moving in 1 direction because the game does not really know how to handle moving left, something Sonic 1 figured out
And why did they need to replicate the code, at all? Couldn't they simply ask Sonic Team for the OG engine?
@@juaneste4640 No because Naka is kinda a drama queen and he wrote the code (Sega owns it though)
@@TechBlade9000 So Naka didn't like other people using his code?
@@juaneste4640 Yes
@@TechBlade9000 If Sega owns it why didn't they just ignore Naka's petty hold-ups, and use the source code?
I really hope Chaotix makes it into Sonic Origins, both so it's not stuck on 32X, and so that it's easily accessible meaning more people will understand how much of a visual overload and simultaneously super underwhelming in terms of gameplay it is. The ring tether IS super cool and fun to fuck around with, but the stages are so big and empty and easy to brainlessly get through even if you ignore the ring tether. But maybe that could be part of the appeal? Like, the gameplay is super fast and momentum based, and the stages are very open and easy... oh shit is this a godlike speedrun game?
I've thought it would be great for speedruns. But if you look, they just use Charmy to fly past everything. I hope someone tries routing a no Charmy run or something to show off what this game can really do.
Origins sucks
Don’t buy it just play fan projects
@@SanicConnoisseur_91 bro we are the same person wtf that's exactly my mindset now hype for P-06 and Galactic and to a lesser extent Omens
@@aortaplatinum hey hey hey
Yeah imo even some of the good official stuff like the sonic 1 and 2 remakes on switch are iffy for me
Personally I’ve never played them bc I’m a little hermit that tries to get the most bang for his f…buck.
I just recently got into Sonic 1 forever and sonic 2 absolute with all the neat mod support
I mean sure it might be easier to buy the stuff but you can’t play with Sally acorn sprites over sonic on the switch
Quick warning
A little rant down here
Now I feel bad
I have standards and if something doesn’t live up to those standards it’s either meh, or a dumpster fire lol
I haven’t gotten around to trying p-06 but I hope to at some point
More importantly I hope it gets finished bc that would also be really neat
Maybe add mod support if they feel like it
Also emulation
Anyways I went on for way too long I’ll go ahead and let you go
I don’t have anyone to relate to so I’m either really quiet or really talkative
And then whenever I do talk I get tired and feel awkward and hope that I didn’t say anything
Like right now
It’s nice to know we’re on the same page

>Omens
Aw man I’m really sorry, two of the projects you were looking forward too ended up being duds. At least P-06 is excellent and Galactic looks to be coherent too
Personally, i just played Chaotix and It was so much fun. The rubber band mechanic felt pretty intuitive to me, so the power of slingshot momentum was bestowed upon me. Pretty fun
Also the Mighty + Vector combo goes pretty freaking hard
TAS speedruns for this game must be INSANE!
amazing video, thank you for saying what i've also been thinking.
Game apologist and cybershell need to watch this video so they can finally understand how the tether ring works.
I’m glad someone else also enjoys this game like I do. I went into it with the knowledge that it would be ok if they got rid of the tether mechanic but otherwise it’s bad. It ended up being one of my favorite Sonic games.
The special stages are just Run from cool math games
I had trouble with the level designs in this one, because all the level segments felt too samey to me. It began to feel more repetitive... So I wound up getting good at the character selector and playing as Charmy with Vector tethered to me as a big wrecking ball.
What always kept me from enjoying Chaotix has been the level design. Levels feel very samey and repetitive, especially with 5 acts, and the need for lots of walls and ceilings to accommodate the tether makes them feel claustrophobic. Maybe it's because the level themes are also really abstract, but I've never felt discomfort like I have when playing Chaotix. Even enclosed zones in other Sonic games like Metallic Madness don't evoke this feeling in me. That being said, I love the special stages. Even though the main levels don't do it for me, the special stages alone are good enough to make the game worth playing.
Wow! The movement tech in this game is pretty...
Chaotix
Just played this game through for the third time, can confirm that it's really good. I've always liked this game (even knowing the internet criticism for it), but it wasn't until this last playthrough that I started to intuit that the tether mechanic was super in depth and a lot of people didn't catch on to that (even myself in prior playthroughs). I think this review has it right. Knuckles Chaotix also gives me a lot of Sonic CD vibes, but with more open design.
°o° ??? My head glitched with the tether explanation... it's like going to university after the kindergarden
Tether Flying is fun because it requires skill and multiple button presses to pull off, and feels satisfying when you can consistently do it, sorta like a BLJ in Mario 64. Charmy flying isn't fun because it's easy and requires no skill, and you're able to cheese all the levels, sorta like infinite flying cheats for Tails in Sonic 3.
Nice to see someone else who likes this one
I enjoyed this game so much more than sonic cd
You didn't mention, this game's music is absolutely STELLAR! One of the best soundtracks on the Genesis/companion hardware.
also it really throws me off when you call rings "coins" because "wtf are coins this is sonic"
I think Charmy's flight is a fairly balanced ability since you already have the ability to airdash for far greater strength and speed with the tether. Charmy's air mobility will naturally make it easier to control that movement with the hold mechanic in the air.
Don’t you mean a Chaos Coin?…..🤣🤣
Love this game
I been playing this game a little bit recently and ive been haveing alot of fun with it. I havent fully 'mastered' the twther mechanic but at least know how to play around/with it. And even when it isnt doing what i want it too, the zaniness of it is half the fun 😂
KNUCKLES CHAOTIX is underrated
I love this goddamn game but I always had the impression that every acts are the same but in a different time, is it true ? (Besides very good video)
Worth noting that Charmy cannot jump or do a spin dash. Also, holding jump gives him a hover.
Not that useful, and dominated by the infinite dash, but that's part of his movement.
Stop calling 'em coins bro is this a bit or something?
I just beat the game and GOD I LOVE IT!!!!
(I didn't even know that espio could climb walls damn)
Fun fact, this is Christian Whitehead's (Creator of Sonic Mania) favorite game.
I feel like the story of this game is kind of wasted potential. We don't get to see the chaotix become a team and we don't get to see the story we have to read it in the manual still. What made sense back into to Genesis limitations. It doesn't work here as this game was on the 32x.
Especially since Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles did such a good job integrating story on a less-advanced system, though I think that's the fault of having Chaotix's levels be randomized.
It’s not a terrible game, it’s the best of the classics. In my opinion
I like the Vector sprites
The stuff with the tether perfectly exemplifies how most sonic fans aren't willing to learn how to play the games with mechanics that differ from those of their preferred style. Most people really don't like this game specifically because of the tether, but if they got their head out of their asses and actually experimented with the game as intended, as opposed to just trying to play it like the other classic games despite the fact that the mechanics are inherently different, they'd probably actually enjoy the unique gameplay the tether allows for. People can have preferences over what gameplay styles and mechanics they prefer, but just because a game like this doesn't cater to the specific tastes of fans of, for example, the Adventure or Boost style, that doesn't make it a bad game. It just makes it different, and I personally feel that it's this unwillingness to actually try out the game, plus this weird definition of what Sonic is "supposed to be" that a lot of fans have that keeps games from Sonic Unleashed, which are now fairly looked at very fondly in retrospect, from getting the recognition they deserve when they come out. All because people had this idea that the Werehog "isn't Sonic" and didn't bother to actually give it a chance because of that.
FINALLY, A GOOD TAKE
Too bad this game never got a port.
Would love to try it someday.
The name of this series should be "Sonic Was Always Physics".
Proof that these games are greenlit for a reason
that doesnt really mean anything but ok
I will not take heavy and bomb slander
Why is the title of this video different from all the rest
The tether is fun and all, but the levels are just so boring. I find the special stages more fun than most of the normal stages

Design: 👍
Music: 7/10 i love marina madness

Level design: 5/10 Repetitive
Gameplay: 💀🤮🤢
ehhhhh the level design is still garbage
People always misunderstand this game, and CD because they're a bit more complicated to understand and the games don't exactly punish you if you're playing them wrong, so people can be playing them wrong and just not know they're doing anything wrong and that'll affect how they view the game, with this game it's ever more difficult though because it's harder to get your hands on it compared to CD
