@@switchstatement568 String theory is an as-of-yet untested theory. Additionally, its extra spatial dimensions are "small", as it were - they exist only on subatomic scales, if at all.
This is by far the best explanation of 4th dimension space I've ever seen. But still we cannot truly perceive how a 4th dimensional object would look like as this is beyond our reality of existence same as a 2D being cannot visualize the 'z' axis (height) as it's beyond their reality. They cannot conceptualize the idea of moving up and down. It's so amazing how 2D shapes spectacularly changes by just adding 1 more dimension to it. Square = Cube Triangle = Pyramid Circle = Sphere Now just imagine by adding one more dimension to 3D (Brain not working Error 404). We just can't imagine how a 3D object would change to a 4D perspective even if we try to come up with the idea of Tessaract (Hypercube) or whatever it is we are still seeing a projection of it but from 3D perspective. We just cannot visualize how the 4th axis works in motion. It's like explaining an object which is perfectly cube and perfectly sphere at the same time. For us it seems illogical but for a 4D being it may be possible. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is how I understand by not understanding the Great 4th Dimension.
Idk but imho I think you got the point better than some who are trying to use the fourth dimension to explain ufos or ghosts(whatever cannot be conventional explained really), for all I know or understand maybe the 6th or 11th dimension explains them. I think the greatest quality a person can have is to admit they don't know everything (But it sure is fun to theorize and try to prove and disprove those theories). {No Sarcasm Intended}
The thing about the Tessaract is it's just a 4D Cube/square/point. But here's the kicker: There are other higher dimensional squares. I've seen theoretical designs on the internet. They go all the way up to the eleventh dimension. And from what I've seen it's just adding more vertices to a Tessaract. It just shows we have no way of knowing what is beyond 3D
We can 100% perceive it, the brain and eyes are capable. Salvia opens an access point to time and dimension travel, many people have experienced going down to 2d, when I returned from a trip I had full on 4d vision. The best I can describe it is like x-ray vision, you can see the outline of every angle and dimension of an object.
This all fun to think about, but, It is just all a bunch of imagining. You cannot use flatlanders as an example because they don't exist. I think there are only 3 dimensions and time. There may be another dimension but I think it would have to be in another parallel universe for there are only 3 in this one and time.

What if flat earthers are 3D projections of higher dimensional objects? Wouldn't it be funny if the answer was right in front of us but we couldn't see it? I think that would be hilarious.
My take away from this: Just the same as we must learn and empathize with the flat landers to have the tools to imagine the 4th dimension, empathy is the key to higher consciousness and wisdom, as we tend to get so caught up in our own realities that we disregard those other perspectives needed to truly see more
My first exposure to the concept of Flatland came from a Carl Sagan video, in which he used an apple and an ink pad to demonstrate the view a Flatlander would have of the apple passing through its living space. I have seen several other videos since then, and yours, The Lazy Engineer, to me, explains this the most clearly. I wonder about this often. Thank you for this superb illustration.
I honestly found it REALLY hard to figure out the shapes of those 3d objects at 7:42 haha. Am I the only one? Also great job on this video, keep it up!
The second one was tricky for me because I assumed they would be right side up, I thought it would look like an hourglass and it kind of does, just squashed and tilted.
I didn't find it that bad. The first one confused me, but the other two were reasonably obvious. the third being the most obvious. It's difficult, but not impossible for simple shapes. Really complicated shapes though... That's another matter.
If ghosts are real maybe they exist in a 4D universe which is why they can seemingly appear and disappear. Their position on that fourth dimensional axis (which we don't have access to) determines whether we see them or not.
Maybe you are seeing a brief reflection that disappears. Like seeing someone in a window looking from behind when in the window they are looking right at at you, both at the same time. Jesus the universe is complex.

If a wooden board moves a cross your fingers you can sort of tell which direction it is moving in. If the wooden board moves down you will feel it. If it moves to the left you will also feel the direction. So could a flatlanders tell what is up and down by touching?? 🙂
Yes. Because friction would apply a force in the z (up / down) direction. So they would feel a force exerted on them in a direction perpendicular to their plane. I imagine it would feel pretty weird!
I imagined the Bird Box monster(s) as probably being extra-dimensional in nature. Their shape being so incomprehensible as to drive one insane on sight.
I always thought of the Bird Box monsters as infinity (because what we know is limited, and physically seeing no limit would drive you insane), but maybe that extra-dimension is past that limit our minds can comprehend.

We could only perceive a 4D object as a 3D object upon a "perimeter inspection" unless we make a deduction of its higher dimensionality as it passed through 3D space.
09:00 Flat landers can't point to the 3rd dimension, so without a direction to "stack" a bunch of 2d cross sections (up or down), there's NO way they could picture the 3d object... especially with how hard it is to even A) figure out what shape the 2d object is looking only at a flat line (cause again no height all flat-landers see all the time is varying line lengths. So to even picture the 2d shape or cross section of a 3d obejct, flat-landers have to rotate the 2d "plane" 360 degrees. Just like we have to rotate a cube or the objects shown in this video to even picture them as 3d creatures living in a 3d world. And B) picture stacking all those memorized 2d cross sections in an unknown direction
you're on point, it's just like how we can only visualize an array/matrix upto 3-dimension, but this doesn't inhibit us from the fact that we can initialize such matrices with higher dimensions, it's just that we can't perceive/visualize it considering perceptive limitations

@@OnEiNsAnEmOtHeRfUcKa You can't represent a 3D object in 2D because it's just a degree of varying line lengths. A sphere would look exactly the same as a cube on one point (3D Diamond). It would start as a point, then become a line growing longer and longer and then shrinking until it became a point again. There would be no way to distinguish the two from each other. A 2D creature could not even tell you how far the object is from itself because to it, an object that is closer would look exactly the same as a bigger object further away. The length of the lines it sees would be the same.
Not really true, that's just seeing in 2D, but having a wide field of view. If you could see in 3D, you could look at a cube, and see every one of it's sides and what's inside of it at one time.
@Useless Virus _ In fact 4D image is possible only when we are able to see objects under the effect of their speed and the gravitational field that they are in, together applying these to ourselves. In other words, you have to add how deformed an object in reference to your own deformation (in reference to your speed and gravitational field), when you observed that object. This video should be shown in every classroom on Earth! It's beyond amazing and thought-provoking. I don't know why this has not millions of views - much junk has. People need to realise this and be more happy - less stressed. I'm the grand scheme of things, being late for something doesn't matter as time is not fixed but changes with gravity and motion, appearance doesn't matter as it's merely how other infinitely small 3 dimensional humans judge you. People need to enjoy their life and not be fixed by man-made arbitrary constraints!

So UFOs are really just 4-5 dimension or higher cross-sections. That explains the way they show up as dots of light in formation that are always locked in grid, but can move together from one location to the other VERY quickly

Understanding the 4th dimension is basically looking at yourself. You look in the mirror and you see your physical self, but you also have thoughts(which exist electromagneticly) and you have a electro magnetic field that surrounds your body, produced by your heart so we are 4th dimensional beings. Our body's being a physical shape but only another shape which is within more bigger layers of the same shape which are just energy. BUT IS VERY MUCH THERE JUST AS YOUR BODY IS. and learning to see these energetic aspects of yourself being your "aura" and beginning to identify back with your aura as we're supposed to is entering 4d than 5d than higher dimensions.

Well done! I've watched many videos which seek to enable us to envision the 4th dimension but this one is more intuitive than most. We cannot "see" a 4th dimention but we can start to imagine what it would like. We just need to be open minded about it. Kudos!
@5:15 : if we looked at a cube from the 4th dimension, we would see all 6 sides all at once. Meaning, we would be able to see the side that is hidden from our plane of view. This simple explanation is the basis of the notion that a black hole is 4D - if you theoretically stood in the event horizon of a black hole, you would be facing the back of your head (due to the physics of black holes and light, but it's that physics that creates the 4th dimension).
@7:43 I actually couldn't make out the objects that were supposed to be moving through flatland. Is that a fault of mine or is it actually a hard thought experiment? Sure it made sense after seeing the final object but the slice wasn't enough for me to make the leap. If its that difficult I can only image how difficult for a flatlander to even conceptualize reconstructing the slices in their minds.
It was hard because he tricked us, he used objects an object we don't ever see (the "rotating" square) and another object, but in an angle that made us think it was a normal polygon.
i got pretty close but had an "oooh" moment when i saw the actual one, and the other shapes after first one were easier cuz you kinda realised better how it worked
Our brains are able to put the 3d shape together but only because we have previous experience with it. And like you said if for you it was difficult then for flatlanders it would be completely impossible to understand or put together because they have no previous experience and so it does not exist in their world and therefore cannot even exist in their mind. Same reason we may one day find traces of 4D but never will our brains be able to understand it and put the picture together.
Amazing video! For the flatlander to picture the 3D object, it was need to be introduced the concept of time, tho. As you said, He could not see the whole shape at once. Therefore, for him, the third dimention was his own two dimension moving through time. I know it's only the first video, but time seems important to picture higher dimensions from any given lower dimension. Am I wrong?
For him the 3rd dimension still isn't time, but his PERCEPTION of it is a CONSEQUENCE of time! Sure, the collection of observations were gathered during an interval of time, but the higher spatial dimension still exists completely independent of time. But like you said, it is useful (maybe even necessary) for visualization purposes in lower dimensional spaces. Really what time equates to in this is the act of collecting data/observations. For the 3Der to picture the 4D object, it is simple. Imagine a baby face, morphing to a kid face, morphing to a juvenile face, morphing to an adult face, morphing to an elder face, morphing to a naked skull. You have just imagined a single 4D object, by imagining multiple 3D projections of it!
Yes, time is an extra dimension; but no, it isn't (completely) like the spatial dimensions; so it was good that you dismissed using time for that, early in this video. It could be, however, that a lot of your viewers might not grasp exactly why time couldn't be used for that. The answer lies in the way that time joins space to form spacetime; that is, in the role it plays in the spacetime metric. And the mere introduction of the concept of metric, opens a whole new can of worms, requiring a lengthy discussion in order to explain its relevance. What it boils down to, more simply, is how an n-dimensional object can be rotated in n-space. Dimensions that are truly equivalent, can be "mixed" with complete abandon in rotating objects. You can rotate a planar object (n=2) with a single degree of freedom (an angle); a spatial object (n=3) with 3 degrees of freedom; a 4D object (n=4) with 6 degrees of freedom; etc., and its shape remains unchanged. But in 4D spacetime, "rotations" that involve time, do not retain shapes. This is easier to see in 2D spacetime: 1 space + 1 time dimension. Because while the trigonometry in 2D space is purely circular, the trigonometry in 2D spacetime is hyperbolic. + John Smith: So, yes, that's a sort of 4D object; but, no, it isn't a purely spatial 4D object; it can't participate in ordinary rotations. +TheLazyEngineer: And BTW, what you repeatedly call "projections" in this video, aren't projections, but sections. You sometimes use the term, "slice," which is correct also.
Inner and outer, I like it. Thoughts are inside and you can go into thought. You can bring out a thought and express it. You can also not pass thru solid objects and atoms don’t mix, even with all that space in between them. Cool video!

Spot on dude, I like how you go back to the basics by relating and understanding how 2d Flatlanders are living a certain reality and it causes them not to be able to see 3d but once a 3d object passes through the 2d reality they can identify it only so far as shapes not the whole 3d object I really like this video because us as 3d beings will always have a hard time, even mentally (forget about physically this earth is 3rd dimension we will never see something from the 4rth dimension pass through this Earth with our natural sight) but mentally with our minds we can imagine it and understand it heck there are more more than 4 dimensions who knows how many...!!?? that is what you were bringing to the table to first understand how 2dimensions peeps would go about imagining about 3d so that we can do the likewise and from a 3d reality imagine 4d... I have been mentally exploring dimensions and one day I had an experience where inside my mind I went on a journey that took me into another dimension, where all things stood still and they were, simply. from without, I could (see, be) it and the experience was complete perception of the perceived. from within, there were all the numbers and the lines waiting on shelves, all of them from all the being. it was the moment before they moved . it was such a complete serene loving tomb like sensation that the only physical symbol I have is death and love combined . it was before the first line was drew and what you are describing is what happened from there further in triangles, cubes and all the other dimensions these shapes span over.

Predicting the 3d shape from it's projection on the 2d surface is like an MRI scan, You only see one section at a time, But if you combine all the sections you get an idea about the whole shape, We can apply this to predict how things will look in the 4th dimensions, For example, if a car moves from point A to point B you will see it as a train in the 4th dimension, This is because you're seeing the position of the car in each frame of the time all at once
That's... not how that works. A 2D object moving in 3D space would be just that. An easily identifiable 2D object. Same with a 3D object moving in 4D space. Unless you're talking about a 4D object moving through 3D space, in which case... that still isn't how it works. It'd grow out of nothing, then shrink and vanish. Unless you're ACTUALLY trying to talk about visualizing objects as their shape through time, in which case you wouldn't be able to see fucking anything, because the entire world is taken up with the motion of all objects, including yourself, and would be more of a windy, twisted metal snake tangled up in the rest of the world.
I’ve seen 4D via 3D and you’re totally right. It looks like it’s forever moving in an indescribable fashion. Kinda looks like fractals. Some people out there may know how this is possible ;)
@@XlWolfMaster Lol. Meditation on a solid dose of psychedelics. You’ll likely see geometrical shapes that should be impossible to observe. Why? Idk. I guess the brain isn’t bound to constructing 3D geometry when you’re in those states isolated from your senses. I have no idea how to give a worthy description of what you can see, but you can see a square from what seems like a 4D perspective. You’ll see all sides of the square, even the inside and outside, from all angles at the same time while noticing its shape/relationship in time, which makes absolutely no sense intuitively at the current moment. Isn’t that called a tesseract/hyper cube or something? All I can say for certain is that it’s absolutely beautiful. Hahaha

What If we “carried” the 2D Creatures upwards, how would they react? Then they would travel as us 3D people. Could a 4th dimension creature take us to a 4th dimension direction?
If you did that they'd die since there would be a extra axis where the slin of there body isnt coverinh and affected by 3 dimensional physics this will cuase there organs to fall out of there body same for if your a 3d person in 4d.

It is very likely for TIME to be considered a dimension. Because all our 3-dimensional world passes through the vector of time as well. In my opinion, time is indeed a dimension, but is it the 4th? The thing is that Time is a dimension that can be perceived even by the 'flatlander' too. Even by a 'linelander', if we think about the concept of a single dimension being whose perceived world is only a line, instead of a plane. Therefore if time could be considered as a 1st universal dimension. And there may be more, but obviously, we are unable to even imagine the concept of what they could be. We live in a 3D world, and we are created to perceive the 3D world. We are absolutely limited to it, the same way as a flatlander is limited to his 2d World. A flatlander obviously can't perceive the 3d World, he couldn't imagine the concept of it, because he is not constructed for that. he is limited to only see his 'lines' surrounding him, which for us are 2d shapes. Imagine a flatlander being aware of us, 3D beings, which at a single sight we can perceive everything about them, their whole world as it truly is...This fact is impossible and unreal for him, but for us is extremely simple to view it, understand it and manipulate it. For a 2D being, which here is called a 'flatlander', a 3D being would be considered a God. Omnipresent, all-powerful. and impossible to understand. Now... What is the 4th dimension? It is impossible for us to perceive that plane of existence. we are not constructed for that, we have no senses and no 'components' for it. For us, the universe is an infinite 3d world, and that is all we can perceive. What is beyond that? If there is a 4th dimension, it is definitely all around us, but we just can't perceive. And if there is the 4th dimension, there also must be a 4th dimension being, which we can't see, perceive or understand. And just the same way that we can see and manipulate the whole flatlander's world.. this 4D being can easily understand, see, and manipulate our entire 3D world way beyond our imagination, and for us, it would be omnipresent and all-powerful. Does that ring a bell? Now, if it does ring a bell to you about who this 4D being is, according to a certain famous book, we may also imagine that he is also able to manipulate time, not just our 3d space. So can we consider him as a 4D being, or a 5D being if we take the time-manipulating ability into consideration? Tell me your opinion about all this. I just described to you my own perception of the concept of God.
It seems to me the reason we cannot "visualize" higher dimensions is due to the spherical nature of our eyeballs and how photons reflect. We literally haven't "seen" it. I would guess it's physically impossible for the flatlanders to have spherical eyeballs because they cannot imagine a 3rd dimension. I wonder what "visualizations" might exist if our eyes had a different geometry. like if they were more shaped like a salad bowl. Or perhaps a hypersphere, etc. How would photons reflect then? How would that be interpreted by our brain? Could we imagine/experience and/or physically be in higher dimensions? Or even a half dimension if our eyes had negative curvature? In flatland (Euclid land): the sum of a triangle's angles == 180 degrees. constant curvature. like the surface of a cylinder or a sheet of paper. On the surface of a sphere, the sum of a triangle's angles > 180 degrees, positive curvature. And a triangle drawn on the inside of a bowl, the sum of its angles < 180 degrees, negative curvature. I'd love to see a video where the orthogonality of the dimensions are explored. (aka what constitutes perpendicular/independence of the x,y,z [and more] dimensions).
The only reason you cant see a fourth dimension is not because of your eye but because of your imagination. You cant think of a direction thats not xyz. flat landers cant have spherical eyeballs because spheres dont exist in flatland, but they can have circular eyes. Who taught you about negative curvature, the inside of a bowl has POSITIVE curvature not negative. If you draw a straight lined triangle in a bowl the angles will add up to MORE than 180 degres not less. If you want to see a surface with negative curvature then search up, hyperbolic crochet which shows you actual negative curvature.
Monkeys only need to deal with three spacial dimensions, so evolution did not prepare us to deal with more. Since for so many purposes the up/down axis can be ignored, many people have trouble making full use of 3D reasoning. A problem I see with most work-arounds for visualizing 4D is them separating the "extra" w axis from the "regular" xyz axes; it makes rotation a strange and mysterious transformation instead of just one of the ways you can move a shape. Using perspective for the z-axis and depth for the w-axis on a 3D display almost works, but a 4D being would have a retina with three spacial dimensions, and so be capable of seeing a _complete_ 3D shape, like we can see a complete 2D shape, which means a) unless we can conceptualize certain deformations as a volume being _tilted,_ (like how a square at various angles can look like a trapezoid, rectangle or rhombus) we're not going to be able to develop any intuition about 4D space and b) just like the flatlander's perspective renders everything they can see as lines that barely register in a spaceworlder's field of vision, viewing a 3D object from within the volume the object exists in restricts the 4D being's line-of-sight to the near surface of the object, which takes up about as much space in their field of vision as a thread of spider's silk takes in ours.
But for the projections, we have it easy. We can see the entire 2d slice of the 3d object at once by looking at it from above. A more accurate analogue would be if we could only see the line of the 2d slice from inside flatland. We would have to construct the 3d object by rotating around the 2d slice and using shading alone to first figure out what the 2d slice looks like from "above" and then adding those all together.
I love trying to wrap my head around 4D. One thing I always get caught up on though when thinking about a 4th dimensional being, wouldn't 2 dimensional beings exist as well? What would they be?
Black hole is a portal to the 4th dimension. If you think about it he said you would have to go in and out and that's what black holes do pull you inwards and a white hole makes sense but we have never seen one we just assume that's what it does. And once something goes in it doesn't come back to our 3d dimension
i’ve had the thought for a while about DMT bringing us closer to perceiving the 4th dimension. i think this video does a solid job of explaining it and it feels good having insight into a bit of what’s going on. the infinite cathedrals of fractals seem impossible yet so intuitive. either it’s straight synesthesia or dimensional travel, both are here to be explored and learned from. 🙏🏼
From an eternal perspective, is time not spatial? Time has to do with speed of light and speed of light has to do with distance traveled. If you look into space, you can see things that aren't physically there (in the here and now) , like stars, but were in the past. And you know they were there because you can see them. I'm just wondering a bit. Not trying to disagree. On a grave stone, time is a date to another date (point A to point B) with a line ("2 Dimensional") in the middle. You're whole life gets summed up to a dash in time. I heard a great sermon about that once :)
No, time has been experimentally verified to be a dimension by special relativity over 100 years ago, albeit a time-like dimension in which we only know of going in one particular direction (forward). When you blow up a spherical balloon, and let the air out , each point in time is representing a 3 dimensional cross sectional area of a 4 dimensional sphere.

Incredible to think there are ppl that think the earth is flat dont they have t.v or maybe even electricity . What do they do for education. If a flatlander was thinking of 3D space he would think to see 4 sides of the square at once, but in reality he will see a side he had never seen before. Mario was aided by 3-dimensional beings. He also exists in a simulation. Something that might be true here. But even if we are aided by 4D beings. There is likely no way we would ever know. It would just be a patch in the program. Or a sequel. In which case, 4D will have always been a thing and we'd be none the wiser.
I don't get it: @6:30 for example, a "flatlander," as per your own rules, would NOT "see a square;" they would merely see: a LINE... and when there was your "circle" in front of the Flatlander, all they would see again would be: a LINE. When it (the circle) Moved up and down, all they would see would again, be a line.
If flat landers don’t understand the concept of 3D tell them to imagine a 1d person. That person can move in a straight line but only a straight line and probably just sees a circle or a void going forward and backward. He can’t move and if something moves through it he will see something suddenly appear in a flash and then disappear moments later. Same concept right? But what if we go to the zero dimension. A zero dimensioner sees one thing for eternity, if something moved through him he see something appear and he will likely get pushed or obliterated (the flat lander or line lander goes through him, he cannot move so he dies?). Now we can only understand a slight concept of 5th dimensions and all the higher ones ... but what about negative ones? Things cannot exist or something but it’s still their itself, beyond the void. Idk maybe think of that one scp who this guy is all alone with only a control panel with a red light, he is slowly getting ripped apart because the reality isn’t real enough and he can’t escape, and once he can it’s too late and he’s just a couple organs and like a limb. The reality isn’t “real” but he still exist but not safely. So maybe similar concept for -numbers but each number lower is more unstable?

That moment where your brain is advanced enough to theorize a 4th spacial dimension but not so advanced as to visualize it. I believe future humans will have the brainpower to do this. For now, enjoy the things our ancestors couldn't.
It would take a lot more power to visialize a 4D object, even when using a trick like x,y,z,t to understand the shape of them. We would need to visualize volumetric data in our minds which are used to planar visual data.
0:51 i dont think the fourth dimension actually exists in real life, just theoretically could exist based on what we know about space and if you added another dimension this is the best result we can make to represent that in 3 dimensions.

This is by far the best explanation of 4th dimension space I've ever seen. But still we cannot truly perceive how a 4th dimensional object would look like as this is beyond our reality of existence same as a 2D being cannot visualize the 'z' axis (height) as it's beyond their reality. They cannot conceptualize the idea of moving up and down.
It's so amazing how 2D shapes spectacularly changes by just adding 1 more dimension to it.

Now just imagine by adding one more dimension to 3D (Brain not working Error 404).
We just can't imagine how a 3D object would change to a 4D perspective even if we try to come up with the idea of Tessaract (Hypercube) or whatever it is we are still seeing a projection of it but from 3D perspective. We just cannot visualize how the 4th axis works in motion. It's like explaining an object which is perfectly cube and perfectly sphere at the same time. For us it seems illogical but for a 4D being it may be possible.

The thing about the Tessaract is it's just a 4D Cube/square/point. But here's the kicker: There are other higher dimensional squares. I've seen theoretical designs on the internet. They go all the way up to the eleventh dimension. And from what I've seen it's just adding more vertices to a Tessaract. It just shows we have no way of knowing what is beyond 3D
We can 100% perceive it, the brain and eyes are capable. Salvia opens an access point to time and dimension travel, many people have experienced going down to 2d, when I returned from a trip I had full on 4d vision. The best I can describe it is like x-ray vision, you can see the outline of every angle and dimension of an object.
This all fun to think about, but, It is just all a bunch of imagining. You cannot use flatlanders as an example because they don't exist. I think there are only 3 dimensions and time. There may be another dimension but I think it would have to be in another parallel universe for there are only 3 in this one and time.

My first exposure to the concept of Flatland came from a Carl Sagan video, in which he used an apple and an ink pad to demonstrate the view a Flatlander would have of the apple passing through its living space.

I knew the second object was yo yo shaped
The second one was tricky for me because I assumed they would be right side up, I thought it would look like an hourglass and it kind of does, just squashed and tilted.
I also assumed they would be regular 3D shapes at first
I didn't find it that bad.
The first one confused me, but the other two were reasonably obvious.

It's difficult, but not impossible for simple shapes.
Really complicated shapes though... That's another matter.

If a wooden board moves a cross your fingers you can sort of tell which direction it is moving in. If the wooden board moves down you will feel it. If it moves to the left you will also feel the direction. So could a flatlanders tell what is up and down by touching?? 🙂
Yes. Because friction would apply a force in the z (up / down) direction. So they would feel a force exerted on them in a direction perpendicular to their plane. I imagine it would feel pretty weird!

We could only perceive a 4D object as a 3D object upon a "perimeter inspection" unless we make a deduction of its higher dimensionality as it passed through 3D space.

09:00 Flat landers can't point to the 3rd dimension, so without a direction to "stack" a bunch of 2d cross sections (up or down), there's NO way they could picture the 3d object...
especially with how hard it is to even A) figure out what shape the 2d object is looking only at a flat line (cause again no height all flat-landers see all the time is varying line lengths. So to even picture the 2d shape or cross section of a 3d obejct, flat-landers have to rotate the 2d "plane" 360 degrees. Just like we have to rotate a cube or the objects shown in this video to even picture them as 3d creatures living in a 3d world.
And B) picture stacking all those memorized 2d cross sections in an unknown direction

It would start as a point, then become a line growing longer and longer and then shrinking until it became a point again. There would be no way to distinguish the two from each other. A 2D creature could not even tell you how far the object is from itself because to it, an object that is closer would look exactly the same as a bigger object further away. The length of the lines it sees would be the same.

Understanding the 4th dimension is basically looking at yourself. You look in the mirror and you see your physical self, but you also have thoughts(which exist electromagneticly) and you have a electro magnetic field that surrounds your body, produced by your heart so we are 4th dimensional beings. Our body's being a physical shape but only another shape which is within more bigger layers of the same shape which are just energy. BUT IS VERY MUCH THERE JUST AS YOUR BODY IS. and learning to see these energetic aspects of yourself being your "aura" and beginning to identify back with your aura as we're supposed to is entering 4d than 5d than higher dimensions.

Well done! I've watched many videos which seek to enable us to envision the 4th dimension but this one is more intuitive than most. We cannot "see" a 4th dimention but we can start to imagine what it would like. We just need to be open minded about it.

@5:15 : if we looked at a cube from the 4th dimension, we would see all 6 sides all at once. Meaning, we would be able to see the side that is hidden from our plane of view. This simple explanation is the basis of the notion that a black hole is 4D - if you theoretically stood in the event horizon of a black hole, you would be facing the back of your head (due to the physics of black holes and light, but it's that physics that creates the 4th dimension).

@7:43 I actually couldn't make out the objects that were supposed to be moving through flatland. Is that a fault of mine or is it actually a hard thought experiment? Sure it made sense after seeing the final object but the slice wasn't enough for me to make the leap.
If its that difficult I can only image how difficult for a flatlander to even conceptualize reconstructing the slices in their minds.
It was hard because he tricked us, he used objects an object we don't ever see (the "rotating" square) and another object, but in an angle that made us think it was a normal polygon.
i got pretty close but had an "oooh" moment when i saw the actual one, and the other shapes after first one were easier cuz you kinda realised better how it worked
Our brains are able to put the 3d shape together but only because we have previous experience with it. And like you said if for you it was difficult then for flatlanders it would be completely impossible to understand or put together because they have no previous experience and so it does not exist in their world and therefore cannot even exist in their mind. Same reason we may one day find traces of 4D but never will our brains be able to understand it and put the picture together.

Amazing video! For the flatlander to picture the 3D object, it was need to be introduced the concept of time, tho. As you said, He could not see the whole shape at once. Therefore, for him, the third dimention was his own two dimension moving through time. I know it's only the first video, but time seems important to picture higher dimensions from any given lower dimension. Am I wrong?
For him the 3rd dimension still isn't time, but his PERCEPTION of it is a CONSEQUENCE of time! Sure, the collection of observations were gathered during an interval of time, but the higher spatial dimension still exists completely independent of time. But like you said, it is useful (maybe even necessary) for visualization purposes in lower dimensional spaces. Really what time equates to in this is the act of collecting data/observations. For the 3Der to picture the 4D object, it is simple. Imagine a baby face, morphing to a kid face, morphing to a juvenile face, morphing to an adult face, morphing to an elder face, morphing to a naked skull. You have just imagined a single 4D object, by imagining multiple 3D projections of it!
Yes, time is an extra dimension; but no, it isn't (completely) like the spatial dimensions; so it was good that you dismissed using time for that, early in this video.
It could be, however, that a lot of your viewers might not grasp exactly why time couldn't be used for that.
The answer lies in the way that time joins space to form spacetime; that is, in the role it plays in the spacetime metric. And the mere introduction of the concept of metric, opens a whole new can of worms, requiring a lengthy discussion in order to explain its relevance.
What it boils down to, more simply, is how an n-dimensional object can be rotated in n-space. Dimensions that are truly equivalent, can be "mixed" with complete abandon in rotating objects. I have been mentally exploring dimensions and one day I had an experience where inside my mind I went on a journey that took me into another dimension, where all things stood still and they were, simply. from without, I could (see, be) it and the experience was complete perception of the perceived. from within, there were all the numbers and the lines waiting on shelves, all of them from all the being. it was the moment before they moved . it was such a complete serene loving tomb like sensation that the only physical symbol I have is death and love combined . it was before the first line was drew and what you are describing is what happened from there further in triangles, cubes and all the other dimensions these shapes span over.

Predicting the 3d shape from it's projection on the 2d surface is like an MRI scan, You only see one section at a time, But if you combine all the sections you get an idea about the whole shape, We can apply this to predict how things will look in the 4th dimensions, For example, if a car moves from point A to point B you will see it as a train in the 4th dimension, This is because you're seeing the position of the car in each frame of the time all at once

That's... not how that works. A 2D object moving in 3D space would be just that. An easily identifiable 2D object. Same with a 3D object moving in 4D space.
Unless you're talking about a 4D object moving through 3D space, in which case... that still isn't how it works. It'd grow out of nothing, then shrink and vanish.
Unless you're ACTUALLY trying to talk about visualizing objects as their shape through time, in which case you wouldn't be able to see fucking anything, because the entire world is taken up with the motion of all objects, including yourself, and would be more of a windy, twisted metal snake tangled up in the rest of the world.

I have no idea how to give a worthy description of what you can see, but you can see a square from what seems like a 4D perspective. You’ll see all sides of the square, even the inside and outside, from all angles at the same time while noticing its shape/relationship in time, which makes absolutely no sense intuitively at the current moment. Isn’t that called a tesseract/hyper cube or something?

I've watched many 4D videos and this is probably the best one.
It is very likely for TIME to be considered a dimension. Because all our 3-dimensional world passes through the vector of time as well. In my opinion, time is indeed a dimension, but is it the 4th?
The thing is that Time is a dimension that can be perceived even by the 'flatlander' too. Even by a 'linelander', if we think about the concept of a single dimension being whose perceived world is only a line, instead of a plane.
Therefore if time could be considered as a 1st universal dimension. And there may be more, but obviously, we are unable to even imagine the concept of what they could be.
We live in a 3D world, and we are created to perceive the 3D world. We are absolutely limited to it, the same way as a flatlander is limited to his 2d World. A flatlander obviously can't perceive the 3d World, he couldn't imagine the concept of it, because he is not constructed for that. he is limited to only see his 'lines' surrounding him, which for us are 2d shapes.
Imagine a flatlander being aware of us, 3D beings, which at a single sight we can perceive everything about them, their whole world as it truly is...This fact is impossible and unreal for him, but for us is extremely simple to view it, understand it and manipulate it. For a 2D being, which here is called a 'flatlander', a 3D being would be considered a God. Omnipresent, all-powerful. and impossible to understand.
Now... What is the 4th dimension? It is impossible for us to perceive that plane of existence. we are not constructed for that, we have no senses and no 'components' for it. For us, the universe is an infinite 3d world, and that is all we can perceive. What is beyond that? If there is a 4th dimension, it is definitely all around us, but we just can't perceive.
And if there is the 4th dimension, there also must be a 4th dimension being, which we can't see, perceive or understand. And just the same way that we can see and manipulate the whole flatlander's world.. this 4D being can easily understand, see, and manipulate our entire 3D world way beyond our imagination, and for us, it would be omnipresent and all-powerful. Does that ring a bell?
Now, if it does ring a bell to you about who this 4D being is, according to a certain famous book, we may also imagine that he is also able to manipulate time, not just our 3d space. So can we consider him as a 4D being, or a 5D being if we take the time-manipulating ability into consideration?

I just described to you my own perception of the concept of God.
It seems to me the reason we cannot "visualize" higher dimensions is due to the spherical nature of our eyeballs and how photons reflect. We literally haven't "seen" it.
I would guess it's physically impossible for the flatlanders to have spherical eyeballs because they cannot imagine a 3rd dimension.
I wonder what "visualizations" might exist if our eyes had a different geometry. like if they were more shaped like a salad bowl. Or perhaps a hypersphere, etc. How would photons reflect then?
How would that be interpreted by our brain? Could we imagine/experience and/or physically be in higher dimensions? Or even a half dimension if our eyes had negative curvature?
In flatland (Euclid land): the sum of a triangle's angles == 180 degrees. constant curvature. like the surface of a cylinder or a sheet of paper.
On the surface of a sphere, the sum of a triangle's angles > 180 degrees, positive curvature.
And a triangle drawn on the inside of a bowl, the sum of its angles < 180 degrees, negative curvature.
I'd love to see a video where the orthogonality of the dimensions are explored. (aka what constitutes perpendicular/independence of the x,y,z [and more] dimensions).

The only reason you cant see a fourth dimension is not because of your eye but because of your imagination. You cant think of a direction thats not xyz. flat landers cant have spherical eyeballs because spheres dont exist in flatland, but they can have circular eyes. Who taught you about negative curvature, the inside of a bowl has POSITIVE curvature not negative. If you draw a straight lined triangle in a bowl the angles will add up to MORE than 180 degres not less. If you want to see a surface with negative curvature then search up, hyperbolic crochet which shows you actual negative curvature.
Monkeys only need to deal with three spacial dimensions, so evolution did not prepare us to deal with more. Since for so many purposes the up/down axis can be ignored, many people have trouble making full use of 3D reasoning.
A problem I see with most work-arounds for visualizing 4D is them separating the "extra" w axis from the "regular" xyz axes; it makes rotation a strange and mysterious transformation instead of just one of the ways you can move a shape. Using perspective for the z-axis and depth for the w-axis on a 3D display almost works, but a 4D being would have a retina with three spacial dimensions, and so be capable of seeing a _complete_ 3D shape, like we can see a complete 2D shape, which means a) unless we can conceptualize certain deformations as a volume being _tilted,_ (like how a square at various angles can look like a trapezoid, rectangle or rhombus) we're not going to be able to develop any intuition about 4D space and b) just like the flatlander's perspective renders everything they can see as lines that barely register in a spaceworlder's field of vision, viewing a 3D object from within the volume the object exists in restricts the 4D being's line-of-sight to the near surface of the object, which takes up about as much space in their field of vision as a thread of spider's silk takes in ours.
But for the projections, we have it easy. We can see the entire 2d slice of the 3d object at once by looking at it from above. A more accurate analogue would be if we could only see the line of the 2d slice from inside flatland. We would have to construct the 3d object by rotating around the 2d slice and using shading alone to first figure out what the 2d slice looks like from "above" and then adding those all together.
I love trying to wrap my head around 4D. One thing I always get caught up on though when thinking about a 4th dimensional being, wouldn't 2 dimensional beings exist as well? What would they be?

If you think about it he said you would have to go in and out and that's what black holes do pull you inwards and a white hole makes sense but we have never seen one we just assume that's what it does. i’ve had the thought for a while about DMT bringing us closer to perceiving the 4th dimension. i think this video does a solid job of explaining it and it feels good having insight into a bit of what’s going on. the infinite cathedrals of fractals seem impossible yet so intuitive. either it’s straight synesthesia or dimensional travel, both are here to be explored and learned from. 🙏🏼

From an eternal perspective, is time not spatial? Time has to do with speed of light and speed of light has to do with distance traveled. If you look into space, you can see things that aren't physically there (in the here and now) , like stars, but were in the past. And you know they were there because you can see them. I'm just wondering a bit. Not trying to disagree.
On a grave stone, time is a date to another date (point A to point B) with a line ("2 Dimensional") in the middle. You're whole life gets summed up to a dash in time. I heard a great sermon about that once :)
No, time has been experimentally verified to be a dimension by special relativity over 100 years ago, albeit a time-like dimension in which we only know of going in one particular direction (forward). When you blow up a spherical balloon, and let the air out , each point in time is representing a 3 dimensional cross sectional area of a 4 dimensional sphere.

Usual Space-Time signature is (-1,1,1,1) (or the opposite, depending on your convention), not (1,1,1,1) like the 4D space (not space-time) discussed here.

Instead of seeing all 6 sides at once, you'll see a side of the cube that is completely hidden from us. You see, flatlanders can't see the top of the square. If a flatlander was thinking of 3D space he would think to see 4 sides of the square at once, but in reality he will see a side he had never seen before. It is the same thing with the 3rd dimension to 4. We will see a side of the cube that is completely hidden from us.

Mario was aided by 3-dimensional beings. He also exists in a simulation. Something that might be true here. But even if we are aided by 4D beings. There is likely no way we would ever know. It would just be a patch in the program. Or a sequel. In which case, 4D will have always been a thing and we'd be none the wiser.

I don't get it: @6:30 for example, a "flatlander," as per your own rules, would NOT "see a square;" they would merely see: a LINE... and when there was your "circle" in front of the Flatlander, all they would see again would be: a LINE. When it (the circle) Moved up and down, all they would see would again, be a line.
If flat landers don’t understand the concept of 3D tell them to imagine a 1d person. That person can move in a straight line but only a straight line and probably just sees a circle or a void going forward and backward. He can’t move and if something moves through it he will see something suddenly appear in a flash and then disappear moments later. Same concept right? But what if we go to the zero dimension. A zero dimensioner sees one thing for eternity, if something moved through him he see something appear and he will likely get pushed or obliterated (the flat lander or line lander goes through him, he cannot move so he dies?). Now we can only understand a slight concept of 5th dimensions and all the higher ones
... but what about negative ones? Things cannot exist or something but it’s still their itself, beyond the void. Idk maybe think of that one scp who this guy is all alone with only a control panel with a red light, he is slowly getting ripped apart because the reality isn’t real enough and he can’t escape, and once he can it’s too late and he’s just a couple organs and like a limb. The reality isn’t “real” but he still exist but not safely. So maybe similar concept for -numbers but each number lower is more unstable?

That moment where your brain is advanced enough to theorize a 4th spacial dimension but not so advanced as to visualize it. I believe future humans will have the brainpower to do this. For now, enjoy the things our ancestors couldn't.
It would take a lot more power to visialize a 4D object, even when using a trick like x,y,z,t to understand the shape of them. We would need to visualize volumetric data in our minds which are used to planar visual data.
