WOW, just WOW. First off, great idea. Secondly, great execution. And lastly, you did an amazing job explaining step by step the reasons you do certain things, and how you go about tackling the problem. Great tutorial! I learnt a lot from this, and will be applying it for a non-diving related project :D Stay safe!

Very good job, have you tried tripple magnifiers?

I did it, but the results are not the same. The lens looks good and it's waterproof, but the pictures...

Also, maybe using glass lenses might reduce some colour fringing at edges due to plastic causing more dispersion of the light. Different colours refract different amounts, so there's always some chromatic aberration - but some materials are better than others. Glass might also distort less under pressure. Just a couple of thoughts. Nevertheless - I love the design. Can't wait to start working on one myself. Cheers!

You comments are spot on! I realised that I had used a wrong wording when describing my magnification lenses, haha. When I talked about a "plastic magnification lens", I referred to the material of the frame, not the lens itself. My mistake by creating this confusion ;). Of course I would always go with a proper glass lens - plastic or acrylic scratches way too easily and the glass lenses I used cost next to nothing, so price was not an issue.

I like the design - thanks for the inspiration. Do you have issues with the water pressure affecting the closed cell foam components? Either water-logging or possibly compressing and changing dimensions?

Hi! No, I did not have any issues with the closed cell foam components. The strip of material which I use between the lenses and the PVC pipe is used to keep the lens snug and even with a bit of compression under water there is no shaking around. It stays snug at any depth. I prefer to keep this foam strip as a loose part (not permanently glued to the inside of the PVC pipe), so the individual parts can dry much quicker and can be cleaned more easily.
The foam that I glued on the outside of the PVC pipe is really just for cosmetic purposes and pressure would not affect its performance.

(cont.) Just realised you might be thinking about the thicker material foam pad to be used as the lens attachment to the housing. Actually I gave one of my dive buddies all the materials shown in the video to make his own lens, using the thick foam pad as a housing attachment. I will have to check with him about his experiences. From gut feeling, I believe the black material that I had found is very stiff and would not give in under pressure in a way that it would affect the performance of the lens. It is possible that this might happen with the baby kick board material. In that case I would advise to cut the piece of foam slightly larger and give it a good squeeze while assembling it in an air environment so even with a bit of compression under water it still holds the position. ;)
