Nantwich Town Centre Pedestrianisation

  • I have just started to review the contents of my many hundreds of various analogue video tapes that I have produced with various cameras and camcorders from the early 1980s.
It’s only when looking back on them that I realise how much things change over the decades.
When I was going through this I was gob smacked to see such a mishmash of 'stuff' going on!
as you can see the overriding feature is the pedestrianisation of the town centre.
What was once the main bus route through this market town had become a serious congestion area. So, like many small towns a decision was made to make it a pedestrian only area.
All of that digging, block paving, excavating going on while cars are driving through, shoppers strolling around, kids about, deliveries being made etc. etc. There's hardly any physical barriers, it's hard to tell the grafters from the rest of the 'cast' no high viz waistcoats, no hard hats, no Health and Safety posters/instructions.
I suspect claim specialists put paid to that, over the years.

I lived in Crewe during my early adulthood from late 70's to early 90's. These videos bring back a lot of memories.

Great footage! It takes a team of 5 men surrounded by safety barriers, wearing hard hats and high vis jackets just to replace a handful of those blocks in Nantwich these days.

Fantastic footage! I'm sadly one of the last but proud generation of Dabbers born and raised here.
John had an eye for progression and a love for Nantwich. Lovely man ❤

How amazing to see all that again. I was a teenager in the town at the time all that happened. Great to see it again. Keep up the good work John. Nantwich I cherish. My birthplace, my school years my teenager years. It was all a great place to belong to...

What a great way to recall Nantwich's past . . . seeing it as it happened. Keep up the good work, John, we need many more videos like this.
I thought the lady strolling along High Street, oblivious to the two cars "crawling" along in her wake, was hilarious. ''What footpath. . .?''

Thank you for this great insight. I was born in 1990 and never knew Nantwich before it was pedestrianised

Yes, I live in Central Nantwich and have for 30 years. Love the town and hope we get back to Covid free as soon as possible. Walked around town today - almost everything shut. Not the vibrant, lively Nantwich we all love, at the moment. (Feb 20th 2021).
