I had a butterkoferi in a 90 gal tank with other cichlids like oscars, jack dempseys, red devil's etc. I woke up one morning to see the buttercup have all the other fish in the corner of the tank. He wouldnt let any of them out. Its a very aggressive fish.
We owned 2 pet stores in San Diego. I’ve seen hundreds of species of freshwater fish. This specimen has to take the title of King Bastard! Lol. Seriously, what an aggressor!
Man, If I had an aggressive guy like that id be to chicken shit to put my hand in the tank. Occasionally when I'm doing maintenance on the tank my Bettas will give me a nip and that alone startles me hehe. :P
I bought a baby Butterkoferi many years ago . He was slightly bigger than a quarter . I put him in a 30 gal. tank with an adult Firemouth , Jewel cichlid and oscar. Within 24 hrs. all three cichlids were dead and only Buttercup (,as I named him) was left. From then on he had the tank to himself . "THE END"
I’ve been wanting a few different fish that you just can’t readily get in Vegas!!! This is one of them!!! Illegal to sell here as juveniles and sometimes you can find them in Asian Aquarium shops as adults people bring them in.. but like You i love raising my fish from babies I also get attached to them very much
Great looking fish! A popular old school mainstay in the fishkeeping hobby, and it's easy to see why. Let me tell you though, they don't call them Hornet cichlids just because they have hornet-like stripes. These fish can potentially pack some real attitude, so if you like it and want the experience of owning one or several? Prepare yourself.
Lol, I definitely felt some of that attitude! The most interesting part is that this fish is very moody, at times I can clean the tank with no problems...and then the next time it attacks me when ever I stick my hand in the tank! Sometimes it can be annoying...but overall its awesome!
I bought a 2" Zebra Tilapia. The first 2 days i put him in my 125g for the first time, it'd get bullied by another cichlid of similar size. Always getting chased around. But that only lasted 2 days!
Nice buttikoferi . I have a pair of buttikoferi of about 8 inches and they are scared a little taken aback if I go near tank . Is that normal . Also with them have jaguar of about 9 inches who all the time messes with them
It depends on how long you've had them. At that size they should be bold, but if you've had them for a month or less than that could be normal they could still be getting used to your tank
lol even my oscar does that.. it actually depends on the character of the fish. my one gets along very well with me african cichlids & rarely shows aggression :p
Yeah I would love to throw him into my 210 but he's a monster compared to them....but at the same time he does a good job living solo! Thanks for watching!
Crazy growth from 1 inches in just a year.... What's max size? Hate to see what another year a growth would become. U could always fry him up and eat him if it gets too big 😂
Lol...yeah they can reach 18 inches! I've eaten tilapia before but never Butterkoferi...if I can get this guy up to 18 inches he's definitely going to be on a plate with potatoes on the side!
lol even my oscar does that.. it actually depends on the character of the fish. my one gets along very well with me african cichlids & rarely shows aggression :p
Beautiful fish! His aggressiveness adds to his character.
Thanks, yes that aggressive personality makes him a lot more brave and curious and overall more interesting!

Awsome video I can't believe how much he grew
Thanks, yeah this guy grew fast and hopefully he stays at the rate so I could see a full sized 18 incher!
@@dwsdarius Do you still have him and if not did it ever make it to 18 inches?
Looks great!!!
Thank You!
mine was 17". I managed to keep a 12" dovi and a 5 foot south American red tail in the same indoor pond.
Wow, that's quite a combo! Mine is now 12 inches but I think I have a female so I don't think it will get too much bigger
dwsdarius yea I use to work for a fish shop that is one of the largest dealers in the country and I would bring home all the freaks of nature.
lol. love that fish. great vid!
Thank you...he's becoming my favorite!
Nice video bro the music was great the bass sounded great on my LG 4G phone. ☎
Thanks, it took me a while trying to find a song that fit the topic and I think this one goes well!

Well dang
Lol...thanks for watching!
Are their fins able to regrow? I have a pair of these and one of them has the tail fin nipped.
Yes, if not damaged to the bone, it can grow back with treatment ( it can grow without treatment too but slower)
he's tough!!! lmao he got u @ 2:04
Lol...yeah that's nothing compared to when I have the siphon in the tank....its like a mini shark attack!
Nice Fish and video. You keep some nice Monster Fish!
Thank You!
In my opinion one of the really really nasty cichlids , can be a total handful
lol even my oscar does that.. it actually depends on the character of the fish. my one gets along very well with me african cichlids & rarely shows aggression :p
Yes I see these a lot in African Cichlid tanks, as of late mine hasn't been as aggressive!
They are awesome. Killers, but awesome.
Yeah I would love to throw him into my 210 but he's a monster compared to them....but at the same time he does a good job living solo! Thanks for watching!
VERY VERY SUPER AFRİCAN CİCHLİD TİLAPİA BUTTERKOFERİ 👍👍👍👍❤️
Nice fish! Have you ever got bitten? I also have a butti and was bitten once, when I tried to move one of "his" rocks.
Thank You, for the most part I have managed to be faster than her, she has nipped me but wasn't ever able to get a good grip...luckily for me!
I'm diggin the music.....who is that by
Its Tobaggan by Silent Partner on youtube audio library
Are still alive that until now???
I like sticking my hand in the tank and goofing around with the fish too. My fish aren't bigger than my friggin' hand though. 🤓
Lol...yeah pretty soon I'm going to have to keep my hand out of that tank....he's getting used to attacking me with a bite every water change!
He's beautiful though.
Thank You! Yes he is!
awesome fish! to bad they are so aggressive.
Thanks, yeah if he was more calm he could have been in the 210, but I have no doubt that I he goes in there he will start a war!
Show me more about the fish
I think I have one of these. Still trying to identify...
mmm yummy talapia XD
Lol...yes when he gets big enough!
he would probably taste better than a farm raised talapia cuz hes got lots of room to grow in XD

I have one just like that but even crazier. He would bite my finger off if I did that.
