    What's the best anime movie you've ever seen? I have to go with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind or Spirited Away!

      The highest-rated 25 or so Anime movies on Letterboxd are all exceptional, could really pick any of them, including:
      - Other Ghibli: Grave of the fireflies, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (both Isao Takahata) or Whisper of the Heart (Yoshifumi Kondo)
      - Any Satoshi Kon movie: the guy made nothing but bangers, all unique, and all in different genres - Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress (personal favorite), Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika & writing/art credit for Magnetic Rose too
      - Akira (Katsuhiro Otomo), Your Name (Makoto Shinkai), Wolf Children (Mamoru Hosoda), A Silent Voice (Naoko Yamada), The night is short walk on girl or Mind Game (both Masaaki Yuasa)
      - Momoru Oshii: Ghost in the shell, Angels Egg
      - No lack of movies part of wider franchises either - Evangelion, Kyoto Animation stuff + many more...

      I think if you’ve been looking forward to this one already, you will definitely get what you’re expecting out of it! Not as much heart or lasting impact as something like a Miyazaki film, but there’s still a lot to enjoy here. Let me know what you think of it. Thanks for watching, dude!

    Studio Ponoc has a distinct style of animation and themes in general so no comarison there. In Studio Ghibli i like Miyazaki but i wasn't really a full fan of his work. I was literally into Isao Takahata's work in general example of his exquisite works are: Jarinko Chie (1981), Gauche the Cellist (1982), Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Only Yesterday (1991), Pom Poko (1994), My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) and The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2014). All of his films are very distinct to each other in terms of the visuals, themes and storytelling. The Imaginary is a fantastic film that has its own identity and unique visual style. No need to compare.

    • @SullyStreams
      @SullyStreams  16 дней назад +1

      I think there is definitely room to compare, seeing as Studio Ponoc is comprised of Studio Ghibli employees that learned under Miyazaki...That's a huge reason to consider both studios while watching this movie! Glad you really enjoyed the film. Thanks for checking out the review!

      @@SullyStreams Fair enough and no worries. It's a fantastic film overall and definitely will have a chance to get an Oscar nomination next year i hope.

      The key players on this movie - CEO/Producer/Scriptwriter Nishimura, Director Momose and Animation Director Konishi are probably more associated with Takahata than Miyazaki - and don't really stick to the Miyazaki style when not on his projects, Konishi was also one of Satoshi Kon's key collaborators from Millennium Actress onwards.
      Similar for many of the animators credited: none of the long-standing core team from Miyazaki's history at Ghibli involved (Okko's Inn for a similar movie made by this group), mainly a group that have worked between Ghibli (often Takahata) Madhouse (Kon, early Hosoda), Production IG, Studio 4C and more recently Shinkai movies.
      In short, Miyazaki is an influence, but not necessarily the primary influence.

      @@NorSabb There will be a lot of competion for the Oscar, with only 5 slots for nomination a few of these will be taken by the big studios offerings, leaving only a slot or two for everything else: French animation is on fire at the moment, Mars Express and Chicken for Linda are strong contenders from the late '23 crop. Flow had good reviews @Annecy, Memoirs of a Snail and Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window won the prizes there, with other anime such as Look Back and the new Naoko Yamada or Sunao Katabuchi movies also in the mix. Depends on how much Netflix back it in terms of a campaign.
