    haven't done a water change on my reef tank in over a year. I just change my RO filters when I notice algae is starting to grow. I also slowly add salt solution when my salinity starts getting low, and necessary minerals like kalkwasser, etc . My skimmer keeps my water clean enough. My clean up crew and beneficial bacteria takes care of the rest with the help of NO3:PO4-X. Reef tank isn't hard. Just need more patience starting one. Most people run into trouble when they can't wait for the complete cycle to finish. The only thing you should throw in first into a saltwater tank is a skinned shrimp. Allow your ammonia levels to rise, and wait till the system can bring it down and keep it down.

    • @g_the_status1474

      By aquascaped tanks, I’m assuming you mean planted tanks. While it is time consuming, not necessarily difficult - with corals you have to have the right parameters with salinity, calcium, phosphate, lighting, flow...amongst many things. This is why reef tanks use sumps to house equipment like skimmers, reactors, refugiums, and much much more. It’s a whole other ballgame.

    Copperbands are very delicate fish which need a REAL REEFTANK for their long term survival.

    If you are not going to have corals then you are not teaching anything significant. Keeping fish is almost the same but keeping a reef is the real deal.

    I'm not a huge fan of the hollow background/rocks over dry rock/live rock. It looks kinda cool, but the hollow background/hollow rocks seems like a perfect storm to catch algae and waste, and doesn't give the same benefit as reef rock a far as biological filtration.
    That aside, as far as fish go, coral beauty angels and flame angels are beautiful beginner fish. I'm also a big fan of copper banded butterflies and thread fin butterflies

    Joey, that canister filter is common. I used those before getting an fx6. A common problem I had with that was the hose attaching to the in and out ports constantly slipping of even being pushed all the way on and tightened as much as I could. Keep a wet floor censor nearby just in case it starts draining your tank on the floor

    The original salt water tanks had no filtration. Just flow, macro algae and clean up crew.
    Also. Fresh vs Salt. It's all in what you like and what you can afford. I'm in winnipeg. Salt water stuff isn't cheap here.

They can be challenging to keep healthy...looking forward to it and the continued evolutions to the gallery as a whole.

      Your issue is that it's a 20gal get 40gal cube will give you more room to play with for your corals in terms of phosphate, nitrates ect the small the salt tank the harder it is to grow corals your nutrient levels would fluctuate like crazy

      @@MyTeaandCrumpets as soon as I get to a different apt I will upgrade. Sadly 20 gal is all I can hide at the moment and even that risks eviction. I know it can be done just not as a noob. But yes in a 20 gal even room temp swing can have detrimental effects even with heaters. I have managed to keep allot alive just haven't got to the thriving point. Still any DIY help or any help other than look what i can do!!! would be very helpful and not many in the salt water community do that. even with coral it depends like an sof coral tank with cloenfish would be a lot easier to maintain than iwagumi tank with dwarf baby tears and discus.
      not to mention diffrent fish and plants like diffrent water orematers. in sw its pretty much universal.
      they can both be easy and hard depending on your setup

    I remember when you made a comment in the past that all of your freshwater tanks had become almost species-only tanks or with only a few species. I feel like you are falling into a similar pattern here doing only butterflies and with the tang gang in the other tank. Maybe one or two butterflies, but why do all butterflies? You could get more variety and expose people to more species if you did something like a butterfly or two, maybe some clowns, a flame hawk fish, or something like that

  • @Crybaby-Media

    I love both, but maybe it’s because I’m a rookie salt keeper. But planted tanks and some freshwater fish care can sure get as complex as saltwater. The only thing I’ve found is saltwater tanks seem to crash harder. I think it’s the abundance of life forms in comparison to fresh. When something dies and is left unmonitored in a small system. The whole system can crash. Same goes for fresh, but I feel it’s a little more forgiving. Dead fish won’t cause plants to die, but dead fish will cause corals to die.

    • @SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU3
      @SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU3 4 года назад +1

      @Pigpen Deluxe not true, i ran 90 gallons SW with two SunSuns 2100 litre p/h and at first all was good. The maintainance that you should keep take so much of your time and the constant big water changes cleaning the canisters high posphate big algae problems and that sunsun UV is slowly disolving plastic in the water expanding algae growt further. Not to mention that this canister wont be enough for the media the aquarium needs if it is stocked for its gallons. The Decoration . . always avoid using unatural materials in SW aquarium. The dry rocks used usually provides much more surface for beneficial bacteria and are becoming live rocks at some point which cannot happen with that decoration at teh same point.

    • @RoosterRew88
      @RoosterRew88 4 года назад +3

      No water changes arent the only issue. You have to clean the canister filter pretty much weekly. The advantages of just a hang on skimmer are better than a sump. Canister filters just are a bad idea. More work less filtering

    • @RoosterRew88
      @RoosterRew88 4 года назад +4

      @Pigpen Deluxe it's not rocket science but it's not as simple as you want it to be. To be fair I keep coral and water changes alone do not do the trick. Phosphates will kill a tank with a canister filter. And weekly changes on 120 gallon tank isnt always realistic your talking 20-25 gallons a week. Plus cleaning a canister filter weekly. There are just easier ways. Idk why you are arguing that

    • @RoosterRew88
      @RoosterRew88 4 года назад

      @Pigpen Deluxe ok mister i want to attack people on the internet. first, you dont get coraline algae from a bad tank. im guessing youve never kept a saltwater tank. if you dont think phosphates are bad for a tank, IDK what to tell you. water changes are not the issue. idk how you are missing this. if you have to do much more maintenance than you usually do, because the method you are using isnt ideal, then why are you using this method? i do biweekly water changes on 150 gallon mixed reef tank. if without a doubt wouldnt run at all on a canister filter. if it was FOWLR. it would run, but would be MUCH more maintenance just to run a canister. this really isnt up for debate. yes, a lot of things worked 20 years ago that isnt practiced anymore.... because better options become available. i get it, youve never kept a real saltwater system and just want to spout things you think you know. but you clearly dont know here.
