I Had the same laptop, with the exact same issue, but in my case, just reflowing the chip at 260 degrees (because I didn't know if the manufacturer used leaded or unleaded solder) and adding a lot of flux, fixed the issue. That was a month ago and since then I have been using that laptop almost every day. This video pointed me to the actual fault, great job, keep it up.
Hello Jonny, the profile is always the same for bga repairs, the only diference is the solder type, leaded solder melts at 185 so the profile is max 215-220, and leadfree solder melts at 220 so the profile is max 240-250
But there is a diagram to be respected though? From heating to tin fusion and gpu removal. I see in your videos that it usually takes 5 minutes to remove a gpu. You follow a precise wave? I'm doing everything to build one machine myself too. And surely if I make it I will put the link of your video.
www.dropbox.com/s/h60hgd250slu93p/kester%20BGA%20profile.png?dl=0 This profile is for leaded solder, for leadfree solder same profile but peak temp is 240-250, try to follow this temp-time graph. The profile is for Reflow or for Soldering in the chip, for chip lifting you dont need to reach peak temp to lift the chip, when you reach melt temp poke the chip to see if the solder has melted and then lift the chip.
Thank so much Nik. I will try to follow the chart. Too bad the dip controller is not available on the supplier's website. I tried to contact the supplier on ebay but he told me he wants $ 500. And a disproportionate price. And now I find myself struggling to find something that is a dip controller.😭😩😔
Some advice needed please: a friend has given me her Compaq 615 for a general overhaul and reinstall of Windows. However, there is an issue with the screen display, as it sometimes flickers and occasionally goes off for periods of time. Gently shaking the laptop or giving light taps to the screen and/or main body sometimes brings it back, but not always. Is this an indication that the screen is about to fail, or is it more likely a loose connection somewhere? If the latter, pls give me a few tips on how to solve it. If the former, is exchanging the screen a difficult job requiring any special tools? Thanks in advance.
Hi, if there is a lose connection then if you keep moving the display or shaking the the laptop the display will keep going off and on again, if you cant get it to go off then the connections and display must be fine, many Compaq 615 laptops have problems with the graphics chip and that what you described is happening sometimes, that is why i cant tell you with certainty what the problem might be. replacing the display is very easy , you only need a screwdriver to replace the display or the cable that connects the display on the motherboard.
@@NikTelio Yes, I appreciate that from a distance it's difficult for you to diagnose the exact fault. But as you said, moving the lid back and forth does cause the display to flicker on/off, so I suspect it is the cable, not the screen (phew!!). Also, I noticed the top cover (with power button) was slightly adrift in one corner as if someone had taken it apart and not put it back correctly. So maybe it was pinching and damaging the cable somehow. Ordered a new one (only €5), arrives next week. But I notice there are cables going through both left hand and right hand hinges, and I'm not sure what their function is. I just hope it's not the graphics chip as per your video as I don't plan to get as deep into a repair as that!! Thanks for your help...
on the right side there are 3 cables, 2 for the wifi antennas and 1 for the web camera, on the left side is the display cable that connects the lcd with the motherboard , many times this cable after many years of use ( moving the lid back and forth) gets damaged and the symptoms you mentioned appear
@@NikTelio Thanks, that's really helpful. It was the right side that was adrift, but I'm going to now poke about on the left to see if I can pinpoint the prob. Will get back to you next week. Cheers!
@@NikTelio These symptoms are really weird. Just turned it on again for first time in a few days. Sure enough, screen working but total distortion. Tried jiggling the wires going through left hand hinge, but no change. Moving the lid no effect. Left it on, after 5-10 mins, reverted back to double image, then clear undistorted image. Moving lid does not disturb it. I trust your judgement that it is the cable which is faulty....but any other possible causes? When these screens fail, is it a gradual process or instantaneous??
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account? I stupidly forgot my login password. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
Hello, usually if the cooling system gets clogged with dust it causes the graphics chip to overheat and fail, it is the most common reason why graphics chips fail, reballing or reflow can help in this situation.
One thing that has been annoying me lately is that with newer laptops any kind of hardware error reporting is gone, no blinks no beeps no nothing. In the past even the average computer user could consult a table or manual and get a general idea about what could be wrong with his machine, nowadays you need specialist equipment to diagnose one. This is more work for us (and we are happy about it), but it is a disservice done to the customers.
Can you please guide me.. i have dell inspiron N5010. the problem is that power on but no displays.. i have done the reflow work but it works for 1 day but again same problem faced.. so please help me in this.. whats the permanent solution of this problem 1) reballing gpu 2) removed the gpu 3) new gpu replacement i heard that if i reballing the gpu then after 4 and 6 months same problem arised... please guide me what to do????
Hello, there is no permanent solution because on many laptops the cooling system was designed not to cool the graphics chip properly so it will fail after a few years of use and also many manufacturers use thermal pads on the graphic chip which is not a very good solution. You cannot remove the gpu, you can only reball or replace the chip, how long the repair will last depends also on the technician skills. I would reball it and use very good thermal components to reduce the thermal stress for the repair to last longer.
Nik Telio thanxx nik.. but if i convert the graphics into the non graphics intel hd on board (conversion) because i am living in delhi india there is no technical skilled engineer of BGA that works like you.. your work is just fabulous outstanding mindblowing. really appreciated.. please reballing my board as well
I live in greece so i cannot reball your board but i think you did not do the reflow as you should, watch this vid so you can see the temperature profile for the reflow, if done right it will last a few months. ruclips.net/video/iLWkNPTyg2k/видео.html
Nik Telio ruclips.net/video/nYz4KmLAsgo/видео.html see this video of conversion graphics DELL N5010. is this method works well for last long?? i had done the reflow work from local repairing workshop . they recommended me that conversion of graphics into non graphics is the permanent solution of this but i am not satisfied thats why i talking with you nik..
i thought that when you said conversion you meant that you will remove the nvidia or amd graphics chip and replace it with an intel graphics chip, your laptop has 2 gpu's one on the pprocessor and one on the motherboard, yes if you remove the graphics chip then only the processor will provide the graphics, there are same motherboards without the extra graphics chip, yes this is a nice solution to your problem.

Nice station you got there 😊.
Any recommendations how may i get one to please 😢
Good work.
hi what machine are you using to remove the GPU from the pcb
do you mean the suction pen ?

Nice black blob on the screen at the end, that laptop is not worth much nowadays... But any laptop is better than no laptop at all. :)
