The temple in Garni was built by the Armenian king Trdat I in 77. The historical and architectural complex of Garni itself is located next to the modern village of the same name. Garni Temple is the only monument preserved on the territory of Armenia, dating back to the era of paganism and Hellenism. If you want to get to the temple, you will have to buy entrance tickets, they will cost you 1500 drams.
The temple of Garni is made of blocks of smooth-hewn basalt. The stones are about two meters long, fastened with staples and pins. The temple is built in Hellenistic architectural forms. Along the entire width of the facade there are nine massive steps with a height of 30 centimeters, which give the structure grandeur and solemnity. The pylons on the sides of the stairs are decorated with reliefs. They depict naked Atlanteans standing on one knee, with their arms raised up, supporting the altars. The temple of Garni is a peripterum in its type. The plan is a rectangular hall with a portico, surrounded by columns from the outside. The details of the Garni temple, in contrast to the uniformity found in Greco-Roman structures, are designed with the diversity inherent in local art. Along with numerous variants of the acanthus leaf, Armenian motifs are introduced into the ornaments: pomegranate, grapes, hazel leaves, flowers. Basalt carving testifies to the first-class work of Armenian craftsmen. Shallow vestibules lead to the rectangular sanctuary, covered with a vault, and the entrance is decorated with a richly ornamented architrave.
