More About This Video:
This is not bathing suit sailing in the Bahamas. There is no pig beach here. There are no catamarans (ok, we actually know of 3 sailing catamarans that went around Cape Horn as well this year amd we did it on one of them) This is real adventure & expedition sailing. We go where no one else goes. None of the other popular sailing channels like Sailing LA Vagabonde, Delos, Gone With The Wynns, Nahoa, Lauren Landers, or Sailing Uma have been here. Why? Because it is hard core real sailing. It is cold. It is wet. It is windy. It is remote. It is difficult. It takes heaps of planning, seamanship, and overcoming challenges to get here. That is why Cape Horn and Patagonia is the ultimate sailing challenge. Now, if you want cookie cutter Caribbean sailing, go away. If you want to learn how to sail from real sailors in real conditions, then click subscribe and come along for the ride!
High current passes need care. The Van Isle 360 race is scheduled around Seymour Narrows, not only the time of day but the best days of the month for that leg. (worst case is 11 knots current) One of our (well mine anyway, not so sure my wife is on board yet) goals is to go around Vancouver Island. Not so sure we will make it in the 14 days the race does but I am sure we can come up with a 4 week schedule. Lots of places to go and see in the mean time.
When I sail in the south of Chile and find those fishermen's ropes, I do the same as them, anchor in the bow and a short mooring aft to the fishermen's rope. They taught me. I have seen up to six fishing boats tied to the same rope using this method.
Seems a good option often times
Love the Whales.
Great job, having the Roxy cameos is important. I forgot to mention Panama is having a drought, limiting crossings. A lot more container ships will be opting for the Straits of Magellan instead of waiting for weeks to transit.
Wow! Very interesting! Amazing how things change
This is hilarious: Roxy barking at the whales
Roxy is such a good girl!
She is!
I reccomend all sailors become a patron...just honoured to be a small part of an EPIC journey...whale shots awesome... Finn
I agree 100%
Ho-hum, another excellent video......... I was happy to see Doggy on shore at the end. Stay warm!
What beautiful and wild scenery. Envious does not describe the desire. You two have made a wonderful choice.
I marvel at your talents and knowledge.
Comfort and Peace be with you.
Safe travels.
Thanks Larry! Cheers to you!
Favorite video here. Well maybe second; the horn rounding was hard to beat. Beautiful. Interesting vid and narration detail. 👍 👍 .
Imagine going through there in a square rigger, no motor, with a crew who hated you or thought you were nuts. Here there be dragons.
You guys are Awsome.
Haha! You nailed it! We thought about that a lot. The old tall ships must have had an army of men in row boats! We bet a lot of rum was required!
Well, that was exciting.....anchoring at dusk. You two take care out there. You don't want to miss bikini weather in the South Pacific🙌🏻 See you next time.✨ 🌊 ⛵️ ⚓️ ❄️🌧️✨
You two are the Real Deal. Highest complement I can come up with and as always,🌎 thanks for taking us places we can only dream of.
Wow, thank you!
What a stunning scenery! Wow
so beautiful. this beats alot of other places you can sail to
Thanks, we agree!
Fabulous episode and especially enjoyed the anchoring/ shore lines. The scenery blows me away. All the best
Thank you!
😃👍👍👍❤ Roxy is a great 13-year-old boat Gard dog, Thank you both for another very scenic and well edited video!
Hi guys ! Very happy you are sailing through our Chileans canals. Enjoy and have good winds and good sea ! Bravo Zulú !!
Stunning scenery. The whales (humpbacks?) were wonderful to watch. Thank you for sharing your adventurous lives with us ❤⛵️
Such a fine job of editing!
Thank you!
Thank you both as always. Your channel is refreshing in that it’s about sailing. The scenery was spectacular. Already looking forward to your next video. Stay safe.
Awesome, thank you!
What an experience!!!! Anchoring in mud or rocky ground? Deep?
Beautiful scenery shots. Whales were my favorite. Of course, seeing Roxy taking part in the adventure and she's enjoying the wildlife too ❤
Good job getting thru the Straits
Roxie looked right at Curtis when he said “treat” !!
She's so smart... and food driven
Love y'all! And XOX to Roxy!
Y’all are the best 3-member & 8-legged crew ever! 😂 Congrats on the awesome teamwork in the Magellan Strait.
Ha! You made us actually count all the legs :-)
Living at North Truro on Cape Cod, seeing whales (right, humpbacks, minke, fin and pilot) from ashore is quite common, but by seeing them that way, they are a long distance away - they are on the far horizon. So it is thru seeing blows that you know there are whales there. But seeing them at that distance, and HEARING them are two different realties. What a treat that was to actually HEAR them! The beauty of that moment made me actually cry. Thank you, Curtis, Kate and Roxy for sharing this. I deeply enjoy your videos XOXO
Hi Sweet Ruca crew, Nice Job getting through the Pass. Love you guys .
Nice work arriving for the transit of the narrows at slack , sort of. As soon as I saw the water surface I knew it was 4+, good job on the helm anticipating the eddy’s effects ! Doesn’t matter how many times you do it it always raised my heart rate. I would second guess myself and wonder if I did something wrong in reading the tide tables and anticipating wind driven water build up on Side or the other? Your good having 8 kn speed capabilities 6 was about all we could do so had to be careful in coastal British Columbia inland passage . Love watching your adventure, thanks for letting us come along!
Beautiful place down there. Smiles all around from you all. Love the narration as you go along. Wonder if Kate is drinking too much creek water though. She gets hilarious sometimes. Roxy is having the time of her life too. You all are the best. Keep having fun, stay warm and stay safe.
Ha! Yes, we both get a bit silly when we are alone on a boat for too long :-)
Awesome! and beautiful. thanks!
Thanks for the nice comment!
so interesting to watch
A great team.
Thanks!
Enjoyed learning more about stern ties.👍🏻
Glad to hear it!
I’ve seen humpback whales off the coast of Santa Barbara a few years ago. It made my wife, daughter and myself feel quite emotional, at least that was until a sperm whale turned up with her calf at which point there were tears rolling down all of our cheeks. One of the most beautiful and emotional things I’ve ever seen! ❤
The same happens to us. Thanks for sharing! So glad you got to share that beautiful moment together!
Very coolio guys... 😎 Go Rozy Go... 😄 Kate doing all the work again Curtis...? 🤪 Be safe... 😀 Good tunes at 8:30 Who was it....?
Great place. You go Roxy!!
My doggie knows that word “treat” too. So cute.
Around the seven min mark I noticed that the "dog watch" was on duty.
Hehe!
WAS the high water due to storm surge; was the high tide level lower the next day? I like the music you chose for this video, but the scenery is so beautiful, you don't really need it. Amazing. If only you folks could have Roxy get the drone up, especially for the humpbacks. 🙂 Thanks.
Wow.... beautiful passage. Love Roxy's enthusiasm. She is really getting gray. Thanks for continuing to share your amazing journey.
Nasty current, you can see the ripples in the water 🤯
Beautiful place and great video as usual! Thank you!!
Roxy Rocks!
The Strait of Magellan! How cool is that?!?!?👍🏻
We agree! Epic!
Another great job and your enjoyment comes through and makes me smile often, thank you and keep up the great work! :)
I don't think there are many things more scary or dangerous when at sea than strong currents, but I'm always impressed by tbe way your yacht appears to handle all conditions. She looks like a peach of a boat to sale!
Interesting video with great editing. Did you speak to the folk on the big ship. I remember making an Ocean passage way before SATNAV and calling up ships on ch16 to ask for a position fix but most never replied. Just pleased we weren't in a lifeboat. I'm enjoying sailing with you.
Keep it up! Love the videos!
Congratulations!
Thanks!
Roxy is a sentinel 😁
great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Go Roxy Go!!!!!
:D
If anyone in the North Sea area (England, Belgium, Netherlands, northern France) area is seriously considering sailing Chilean Patagonia, let's connect. I'm gearing up for such a project, timeframe 2025.
I'm interested to know more. I'm a sailor with 12m yacht.
Thoroughly enjoyed today…thank u so much
roxy and you guys rock
👏👏👏
Hi you three, thanks for showing us the beauty. How long are your blue and green lines and what size is it?
So beautiful...
Thank you! Cheers!
AREAS AROUND PUERTO MONT CHILE TRY THEIR EQUIVALENT PF ALASKAN KING CRAB
THEY ARE GREAT AND HUGE BEYOND BELIEF ! CHEERS
👍
Could you imagine entering the Straits of Magellan and seeing an Aircraft Carrier coming at you. One went through there in 2004. USS Ronald Reagan.
It had to be quite the sight! It must have towered over the terrain. We got the chance to talk to the Chilean Navy Pilot while we were in Puerto Williams that lead the career through. Amazing stuff, and worth noting the effects of tidal currents from the side channels on deep draft vessels.
Can imagine the insight he had about navigating Patagonia was a treasure trove.@@SailingSweetRuca
I sailed that area when I was in the Chilean navy. As a tip, don't even think about eating bivalve mollusks because they could get red tide, which is deadly for humans. Greetings to both of you.
😃
I'm curious about your use of diesel and provisioning. Obviously, you have to motor when you have to motor. But how far apart are opportunities to refuel and/or reprovision?
Re-provisioning options are 600 miles apart in these parts. Once we turn the corner and start heading North, we do a lot more sailing than motoring. It is a great question though, as this is a very important part of this, especially in this direction (going South with the prevailing winds and current uses much less fuel). Power generation for video editing (solar is non-existent here this time of year) also is a huge diesel consumption.
😊❤
You got some fancy knots you want to share?
That could be a fun video. If you can't tie a knot, tie a lot! :-) Bowline, half hitches, truckers hitch, cleat hitch, brummel splice, figure eight, clove hitch, halyard knot, what am I forgetting?
How old is Roxy?
13 + ish.
