After being told the transfer was symbolic they ought to have asked for the bear back.
Maybe Castro took it with him in his coffin?
Damn right!!!😁
They should've asked before Castro died!
The bear was bearly theirs to begin with
I knew a girl from East Germany. Her uncle told her about his first visit of West Germany in 1980s. He was shocked by 3 things there: wealth, lots of Turkish/Kurdish mgrants, legal prnography.
The teddy bear is worth $20 and the „symbolic“ giveaway of an island is worth $0 😤.
Germany got ripped off once again.
They should ask the teddy bear back.
But the teddy bear probably had a bug in it, so the East Germans maybe still got some value out of it.
Cuba got free training for their secret service, courtesy of the STASI
Germany got ripped again by not claiming it. England has some of the most remote islands on the planet all for control of the territorial waters. They may not have been able to control the waters but they would have had access. Fishing alone would have made it worth it.
@@finscreenname They should claim the island but won't do it because of their past
I just can’t get over the fact that they gave Castro a teddy bear
The teddy bear is worth more than the island as well
Well Ernst Thälmann' nickname was actually "Teddy", soooooo we got the Ernst Thälmann Island and we gace Castro a Teddybear, probably, called "Teddy". Kinda funny when you think about it.
@@sammybeaver9130 wait for real? I mean there’s nothing there but it’s still Land in the Catrinen Right?

HAI: To understand why East Germany collapsed let’s go to the Big Bang
Well, that was a habit of James A. Michener. For example, his novel "Centennial" begins with the prehistory of Colorado. So there is at least one precedent.
Right
And don't forget that the real cause of World War II is the Big Bang.

Weird thing is in my first job I was posted from UK to Berlin in 1987. We used to go into East Germany on day trips.
I was good friends with a woman who worked for the East German government. We kept in contact by letter (no internet in those days)
I was always impressed with her immaculate English and handwriting.
I was in Berlin when the wall came down. We lost contact from about 1982. I still have her letters and it's clear from reading them that she knew that the wall was coming down at least 10 month before it did. One letter dated February 1989 she talks about great changes before the year in out.
She ended up working for the all German Government but sadly died in 1998.

German teddy bears have a proud and long tradition for being high quality children's toys.
Most renowned is (I think) the German Steiff Company but that was located in West German during the Cold War.
What I could find from former East Germany is a Richard Diem Teddy Bear. It was manufactured first in the 1930s but a 1950s (East Germany period) model is offered today for 328 Euros.
Description:
Rare vintage Richard Diem GDR East Germany Teddy bear gold mohair pluche 1950s 15 inch height or 38 cm.
Growler glas eyes. Fully jointed.
So it was by no means a cheap teddy bear.

a small note: during the bit when you say "during a state visit by a east german diplomat", you show a picture of Castro with none other than Erich Honecker, the General Secretary of the GDRs SED party, basically the head of state. And he was there during that state visit, where the picture is from. So it is downplaying it a little by calling it "a state visit from an east german diplomat".
