My cat Landon does the same thing when we play fetch. He has learned that if he doesn’t bring it back to me, play time stops. So now, he brings it back every time until he is done playing.
@@iceshadow01 honestly when I had my cat, I bought a lot of the same toy for that reason 😂 he'd leave it behind or not close enough to I'd just pick up the next one lol
@@catmanjohn_ Billi's owner says she meows much less since getting her buttons too. I think it's further evidence of this being real communication, versus random button pushing.
That is absolutely fascinating! It's clear he understands the words, not just the buttons and where they're located. When you ask what he wants, he looks directly at the toy bin, and settles on mousey. And when you tell him to get ready, he understands the command immediately. I'm sure that latter behaviour was learned before the buttons were introduced, but it still shows that he understands verbal cues, not just rote learning from the buttons!
Russell dropping mousie out of reach is inviting momma to also play mousie fetch. Russell fetch, momma fetch, Russell fetch, momma fetch. He made a new level to the game 😂
Win makes me think of a wise, older aunt who sits quietly in the living room knitting & smiling because she doesn’t speak the language. Her eyes are so compelling.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Our youngest does the same thing when playing fetch: Brings it back, but drops it just out of reach, and an increasing distance away each time more often than not. I think they believe we have infinitely stretchable arms, like the superheroes... (Or, cats just have a bad sense of scale and perspective, which might explain why they insist the 3' long stick toy can fit into a shoe...)
Just like dogs. I really think it's their way of making sure we get a bit of exercise as well. You know, because we insist *they* do. Btw, I've noticed (but not mentioned) Russ has the same "paint oops" spot on his back that my Fletch has! It's such a unique mark, isn't it? But it's distinctively so *them*. Maybe Russell and Fletchy are distant cousins...very distant - East Coast-West Coast distant. And a number of years. But distant cousins nonetheless.
Lol at least Russ does not bring you live presents i just spent 3 hrs trying to catch a small bird he came in walked right to the couch and dropped it on my feet ..... Needless to say i was startled and may have screamed he is currently strutting around like he is VERY PROUD
Omg, I had one who dropped a live mouse on my bed while I was still in it. I was simultaneously flailing around screaming while also telling her thank you and what a good girl she is.
Apparently you're supposed to praise them. If you don't they think they haven't done a good enough and try to raise their game. You'd better start praising or could end up with a fat pigeon.
@@alexfnyc Oh, the same thing happened to me! I will never forget how my little Marbles woke me up with a strange, loud MeROWR as she was coming up the stairs. She jumped on the bed and dropped her gift. I slammed my light on yelling MOUSE! I scared my husband who bolted upright. The poor mouse did a little pathetic scurry on the bed while Marbles sat proudly watching me. I caught it by its tail. And I praised and thanked Marbles while my husband took it outside. Good memory, Alex. Thanks for the reminder!
I absolutely love when kitties carry their toys in their mouths! I have a spiral staircase and when my youngest started crawling, we had to block off the stairs and all the banisters. So my cats either slide under the banisters or jump over. When they jump over with one of their babies, I just laugh and melt! It is the most adorable thing! Every night they bring all their babies upstairs and put them outside my bedroom door. And then my 3 year old son will throw them all downstairs in the morning. This will continue throughout the day. Lol. Cracks me up! 😂😂💜💜
You and Russel are my final inspiration for myself and my orange boy~! I've been reading and learning for just over a year and our first buttons arrive tomorrow!
I love how he just yeets himself across the room when you throw the toy. Such a speedy boi! And how he practically flipped one time when you threw it, lol
It really nice to know my cat isn't the only one who returns the toy just out of reach!!! I found though, if I'm not watching her return the toy she'll usually drop it at my feet to get my attention!
You’re not allowed to be lazy mom lmao 🤣. Russell is freaking adorable when he’s is ready for fetch. Costs stance ever. Those tiny meow were so sweet as well. This whole video was a big ball of adorable.
I had a cat that loved to play fetch and the favorite toy was those terry cloth hair scrunchies and yes the cats always love to drop them out of reach it seems lol
You: I'm lazy Russ: Yeah, really ? I have to learn your language, when you won't learn mine. I have to spell out what I want... and even then you won't meet me half way when I got the mouse YOU threw away. Rude. 🙄
You all have been a joy to watch I lost my baby girl Church in early September I am looking forward to the day I am able to get another baby but I am taking time to heal and we will have to get a new place
My sister in law and bestie's cat plays fetch like this but hers brings it back. Basicly throwing it at her. Love watching Russ, Teen and Winny. Beautiful cats.
My cats LOVE fetching too! Lately, the kittens have started to get above my head when I'm asleep & drop mousies & puffys on my face to wake me up if I'm sleeping too long for them.
Do Winnie and Teen(s)ever seem to feel left out with Russell and his buttons getting so much attention? I've always worried one of my kitties wouldn't get enough attention so I think I'm transferring. Thanks for sharing your family, I really enjoy watching.
Idk about other cats but mine tell me (fairly aggressively) if they feel they arent getting enough attention. Then again i know one of them has separation anxiety.
Russell is so particular about EVERYTHING . The correct mousey must be thrown in the correct manner- all whilst making sure that the laundry doesn't loiter in the washing machine for too long. I'm sure that he is an 89yr old lady trapped in a cats body! Love you guys x
I love this so much. My son's ESA is so intelligent, our friends suggested AAC training him. I just ordered his first buttons! I can't wait to see how he does!
I love how Winnie just sits there lol no wonder she's a lil chunky lol lol. Not judging I had a chucky munky myself, my grey tabby who was my special baby! I only fed him twice a day hard food. I miss him so much! Your babies are ALL really beautiful!
My annoyingly adorable younger cat does this exact same thing, refusing to bring the toy back the whole way. He also gets mad if we don't throw it the right way and will just look at us like we're stupid until we pick it up and do it right.
Russell is cool cat. I was wondering , Russell has been so subjective to the button system , do the other cats not get what he is doing yet ? How long has this taken on the button system ? Cheers 01/09/2022
I saw one of the videos of teen learning. Its more about personality and the cats willingness to learn it. Russell wanted to communicate (to prevent a horder owner again, hence the need for chores to be done) teen is now finding it interesting, while winny and liby rarely watch
I actually trained one of my cats to bring the toy actually to my hand by refusing to go get it when he dropped it out of reach. Granted, he's also a 20lb dogcat that was raised thinking a boxer mastiff was his daddy, so yrmv
My darling boy, Muzzbert, had a particular favorite mousie, who earned the name of Steve, due to his unusual longevity. Steve ultimately betrayed Muzzbert and his dismemberment, after 3 months, 4 days and 7 some odd hours, was distressing for all involved.
Does he ever pick up his toys from the floor and put it in the toy bin, or does he only tell you to clean them up? 😆 If latter, I wonder if you can teach him to clean up HIMSELF 😂
I really need to know how exactly did you teach him to do all that? My cats look at me (and that is IF I can get their attention) like I'm some alien or something.

When Russell presses buttons, he's not 'using his words', he's using your words. The cat's bilingual.
