  • This video is another quick curated flip through some of my many figurative art journals over the last 10 years. My sketches are from many live life model sessions, photographs, artist copies like Joseph Clement Coll, and anatomy textbooks including George Bridgman's, "Constructive Anatomy" and John Vanderpoel's, "The Human Figure." Also, the selected sketching encompass a wide variety of art supplies and mediums from pencil, ink, watercolor, and acrylic paint.
Honestly, it is odd making this video... Like most sketchbooks, these ideas, drawings, and paintings were originally never intended to be displayed or exhibited. They were my drawings of practice and exploration.
The video does contain drawn and painted nudity.
Little Odie and I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

Wow! Impressive, inspiring and educational. Congratulations and thanks so much for sharing. I didn’t use my sketchbook as much, but lately I have been trying. I think it is important to document your work and progress. I loved the small sketchbook with the eyes, hands, everything related to portraiture and human figure. Thanks for all the encouragement and for sure the practice is what makes us better. I’m slowly catching up with the videos. You are awesome! Take care.❤

Thank you so much! It is always a real treat hearing from you. I am so glad you liked this video too. Well said! Sketchbooks are so important to our personal and artistic growth. They are our little visual playgrounds. Anyway, don't go too far back in the videos... the early ones were a little rough. :) Thank you again!

Wow, Mike, such fantastic work. Your gouache work still reminds me of Degas... something about the softness. I'm so glad to see you back producing content--you are an inspiration and truly a talented video-maker! Thank you for sharing. Well wishes to you and yours. ❤️

8:01 is so badass. Would you recommend that exercise? What were the key takeaways or was it just a ton of things?

Awesome! Thank you! Thanks for the comment and question... I thought it was a great exercise for a few reasons. Ive done it twice. Once in college and once after I graduated. Anyway, it takes away the hesitation of drawing by having to find something to draw. Sounds small, but it keeps you drawing everyday until it is complete. Sometimes finding something to draw can take time which could strain one's motivation, so I would not draw that day. Second, I found Bridgman's drawings VERY helpful for anatomy comprehension. His drawings being unpolished and exaggerated are perfect to help deconstruct how he made them. It really helped me sighting the anatomy via observation and it helped more so with the invention of human form. I say give it a go. Best of luck.
Oh! I drew it the first go around with pencil. But on the second go around, I drew it with pen, as seen on the video. Pen helped me so much slow down my mark making and kept me in the moment. It was so frustratingly good. :) Cheers!
