these "deep Rewind" videos are amazing, and the details you guys reveal are terrific. But, the videos always cut off too early, gotta let the moments run out a little bit longer to truly relive what it was like.
We all know what happens. The focus on the buildup to it is the point. They don’t let the moment itself run out longer on purpose, and I hope they never do
Yup, I still haven't followed the NBA as closely. I grew up watching Miller and I honestly believe he would have won a ring that year. Still can't stand Artest. He destroyed the Pacers season and the Pacers stood by him...then the very next season he asked for a trade. Just a selfish, thoughtless guy.
@@Vichedges Artest needed a change of scenario. He was on therapy, going through his obvious mental and anger management issues, and has said that during his therapy he felt and came to the conclussion that leaving Indiana and having a fresh start somewhere else was necessary for him to get over this. He's said aswel he feels bad about how he left the team and expresed remorse for not being able to compensate his teammates for staying by him. So I guess why Pacers fans could be mad at him but can't really blame the guy for trying to find his internal peace.
@@gdl3467 That's great, he still screwed the team and fans over after they stuck by him. He ruined Miller's last chance and then abandoned the team the very next year after they defended him and stayed with him. I don't know what leaving the Pacers would have to do with him fixing his mental issues. The guy was talented but he bounced around the league for a reason. I think he played for 5-6 teams and twice with the Lakers.
I am right with you on this… you could feel it, Indy was sending a message and smashing the defending Champs in their own house and I can’t help but feel just so bitter that it all started with just Wallace overreacting to a hard foul probably because he was angry with how much the Pacers were embarrassing them that night. Above all just gutted that this all happened in Reggie’s final season in which it clearly looked like it would have been his best opportunity to actually win it all. Something so small, just one moment and it changed the Pacers’ course permanently. So damn sad.

jimbo 2346 he was most known for it because he admitted to doing it and incriminated several others. But instead of them getting blasted publicly for it, people in general chose to believe that he was a lone wolf and he was outcast from the league. Probably to save themselves from the harsh reality of the situation.
Atlanta has a weird history with trades in all sports. The Falcons had no idea Favre would become a Hall of Fame QB in Green Bay. Without Pirates manager Jim Leyland flipping his lid, Barry Bonds could have spent much of the 90's in Atlanta via trade.
Wallace should have got a bigger suspension. The Pacers were destroyed by all the suspensions that year and they still made it past the second round of the playoffs.
That suspension to Artest is the biggest reason why Detroit returned to the finals. Unrelated note, Josh Jackson of the suns recently claimed to have been in attendance for this game.
Joshua Frick First and foremost, the league has changed drastically. Your comment was absolutely ridiculous. Second, Ben Wallace was undrafted and worked his way to becoming the best defensive center of the 2000s. He was one of the strongest dudes in the league and he was quick enough and agile enough to defend the perimeter.
@@jrthegoatsmith712 Back then you could manhandle your opponent. Not today. Teams didn't shoot nearly as many 3s, outside of Dirk Notwitzki and maybe Mehmet Okur (who played on his team for a stretch) how many stretch 4s were there in the association? Tayshaun Prince, Rip Hamilton and Chauncey Billups guarded the perimeter, so when was this impressive display of perimeter defense by Ben Wallace done? You have a link to a clip on RUclips of it, because you're talking to a 40 year old hoops head who was obsessed with the NBA at this time & I have no recollection of any outstanding Ben Wallace perimeter defensive plays... Also, I don't think you understand what basketball talent means. It means shoot, pass, dribble. Ben Wallace had none of those skills. Therefore, my point stands. His ass would not be on the court in today's NBA, just like Kenneth Faried. When Faried's contract runs out, they'll run him out the league totally. He'll wind up playing in China or maybe somewhere in Europe, but even there they may not have use for his skill set.
@@LaPride247 You think the comparison to Kenneth Faried is unfair? You realize Kenneth Faried is only still on an NBA roster because of his contract? He plays 5.6 mpg. Fwiw, Faried & Ben Wallace's rebounds per 36 min are nearly identical. Faried 11.9 Ben Wallace 11.8. Wallace played the majority of his career in an era where you could push, shove, and pin down offensive opponents with far more freedom than players have today. Wallace won 2 of his 4 DPOY's prior to the hand-checking rule was introduced. And anybody who watched basketball in the mid 2000s knows the game is called tighter than it is today. You didn't have bullshit calls like the way James Harden gets a hall pass to the FT line 20 times a game like today. They let the players play back then & Ben Wallace benefited from it. Also, I said almost zero basketball talent i.e. shoot, pass, dribble. He could do none of those things at a professional level. He would not make an NBA roster in today's NBA.

What I find odd is that in a college football game the next afternoon, South Carolina and Clemson had a massive brawl at the latter's stadium on Jefferson-Pilot Sports. Both programs punished their teams by not accepting bowl bids after the game despite both teams being bowl-eligible. I hate that Lou Holtz left South Carolina on that note.
It was basically after this season that they changed the rules on hand checks, leading to the present era of free movement and sharpshooters. The final score of that game with the Tayshaun Prince block? 72-67. Detroit had 19 blocks, Indiana 7.

As a Pacers fan, it breaks my heart to think of what could have been for that seasons Pacer team. I will go to my grave believing that if this had never happened, the Pacers would have won them a ring that year. And it's just sad for me to remember this.
It's crazy because had this brawl not happened it would've changed the course of history. Detroit would've never won that series against Indiana with a full squad without that suspension and Reggie Miller would've gotten his first ring. As I believe with my Lakers being a mess going into the NBA finals that indiana would've beaten the Lakers.
@@TheJSexton24 I liked Detroit coming into that season but indiana was hungry and was on a mission to dethrone Detroit and get Reggie Miller a ring. That was the reason they got Stephen Jackson from the spurs and other players to beat Detroit in the NBA finals that year.

@@skoobz-11 It took them years to get rid of everybody involved in this incident though. People like college basketball here way more than NBA to begin with. And remember, the Peyton Manning era Colts were going on at the same exact time this happened.
I'm an Indiana resident and Pacers fan as well, and this still haunts me. Can't say I was pleased with B. Wallace getting a 6-game suspension for shoving Artest in the face, which really kicked this mess off, versus Artest receiving the harshest suspension in NBA history after it escalated beyond control. I knew Artest was going to get hammered because it involved a fan, but it didn't exactly seem even. Besides a hard foul, which was called, he didn't put his hands on anyone until after he had been shoved across the court then get a beer in the face while he was trying to cool off. I think Vernon Maxwell got 10 games and a $20K fine for going into the stands and punching a fan. Artest got 86 games and forfeited over $5 million. I'm well aware this was different than the Maxwell incident because multiple players were fighting with fans, but it was also the case that fans were physically attacking the team. It was just a mess all around.
Honestly this was one of the best things for the league. The fans have been incredibly well behaved ever since. They're starting to get a little unruly again but sometimes stuff like this is what happens to remind them they're not invincible, and can't just do or say whatever they want to these players without consequences. I guarantee you another drink is never thrown in an nba arena
Song I wrote in 7th grade in Indiana after watching this game _(to the tune of Pinky and the Brain):_ "They're Ronnie and Jermaine They're Ronnie and Jermaine They played the Pistons, And things went insane! Ben Wallace kinda snapped And Fans were throwing crap Each one deserved a slap From Ronnie, the Pacers, and Jermaine, 'maine, 'maine, 'maine 'Maine, 'maine, 'maine, 'maine 'Maine!"
This is a really good video, as per usual. I liked the tone of it. The rest of the rewinder videos are about some incredible, happy moment for one of the two teams...this wasn't that, and you treated it that way. Good job.
Javian Johnson I think that’s more the result of various terrorist attacks and fan on fan violence rather than this fight. None of the additional security would stop someone from throwing their stadium-bought drink at a player.
The Malice at the Palace is Larry Brown's fault. Why Ben Wallace is still in the game and down by 15 points in four quarter with less than a minute to go?
My all-time favorite line regarding all of this, Stephen Jackson said that after they were in the locker room, Artest said, "do you think we will get suspended for this?"
Just so everyone knows what the aftermath was: Ron Artest - 86 Games | the rest of the season. Stephen Jackson - 30 Games Jermaine O'Neal - 15 games Ben Wallace - 6 Games Anthony Johnson - 5 games Reggie Miller, Chauncey Billups, Derrick Coleman, Elden Campbell - 1 game

right?? He doesn't even mention the length of artest's and jackson's suspensions which changed the season for the 05 Pacers.
That plastic cup snatched a WELL DESERVED ring off of Reggie's finger. Gosh, I hate seeing stuff like this happen to good people. Imagine how awesome it would have been to see Reggie retire with a ring, walking off into the sunset.
On the bright side, this way Pacers fans can say they might've won that ring, when in reality they'd have just choked like always lol
Pacers weren't beating that Spurs team
A Knicks fan would see otherwise
Pacers choked
I mean, Ron Artest could've also *not* ran into the stands and attacked probably the wrong guy
these "deep Rewind" videos are amazing, and the details you guys reveal are terrific. But, the videos always cut off too early, gotta let the moments run out a little bit longer to truly relive what it was like.
Copyright risks is probably the reason why.
We all know what happens. The focus on the buildup to it is the point. They don’t let the moment itself run out longer on purpose, and I hope they never do
Best episode... It’s so hard watching this being a life long Pacers fan. That was our year. If only Ron Artest was Meta World Peace a tad earlier....
What could have been…A Pacers/Spurs finals in ‘05 would have been wild.
If I was Ron Artest, I also would’ve tried to fight a fan instead of Ben Wallace
Ron probably would fight Ben, he was a madman.
well, he had his chance and decided to punch a fan instead!
@@jjmah7well the fan started it.
Jacob Esnard actually Ben Wallace started it...

Tim Donaghy was a great ref. I feel bad that this incident is what he’s known for and is the only minor stain on an otherwise excellent and spotless officiating career.
😂 LMAO nice
The best part of his career was how he never succumbed to the temptation of betting on the games he reffed!
gmwdim well he’s catholic. They’re known for not giving into temptation at all costs. Does anybody know if he’s still officiating? I haven’t seen him in any NBA games. But he probably just got promotion.
OmegaMan I heard he’s having a good few seasons officiating in China.
Lmao
For those unaware, at 9:36, it was the fan in blue who had tossed the cup, not the guy that Artest actually wrecked.
Funny enough, he pushed Artest into the guy that he eventually fought. What a putz.
Bill Burr has a great bit about this... "What an invaluable life lesson that guy got. When something awful is happening you don't just stand there and watch it like you're seeing a movie... He just stood there trying to explain himself, well as you can see I still have the liquid in my cup (PUNCH), so it couldn't of been (KICK) Meeee!!!" LMFAO!!!

Fun fact. Arrest actually became good friends with the dude he hit
@@carlospezzotti6239 That's too bad. Given that the dude was a thug for throwing the soda, and lives in the thug city of Detroit, would have been more fitting if he got murdered for acting like a fool by a fellow thug.
Great job at laying out the storyline of this huge event. I was watching this game live and just remember being in shock after watching this happen. The Pacers were a title contender for a couple of years there. But sometimes fate and some bad luck steals away those opportunities. Great video.
Fun little story about the Malice at the Palace

I'm a big Pistons fan but that Pacers team was really something. It's a shame that one cup derailed everything for them
people forget this but ron artest was their best player..he was the reigning dpoy and a minny kawhi leonard for his era and a better Draymond Green with his versatility and intimidation and just effect on the defensive end and ability to playmake dribble shoot and run the floor at sf or pf...losing him was a death sentence...o'neal tinsley miller jackson foster jones jones pollard davis gill johnson were all built around him and his skills..that team would of been nice had bender and harrison stayed healthy without artest but oh well ..artest and jackson ironically both helped teams win titles as starters main 4 scorers before and after this so...

Of course Donaghy didn't do anything to stop the early scuffle. The Pacers had already covered the spread, so he was good...
jimbo 2346 you think he was the only one betting on the games?
@@Saltyahole probably not, but he was the one most known for it.
jimbo 2346 he was most known for it because he admitted to doing it and incriminated several others.
But instead of them getting blasted publicly for it, people in general chose to believe that he was a lone wolf and he was outcast from the league. Probably to save themselves from the harsh reality of the situation.
Donaghy mentioned in the oral history on Grantland that the himself and the refs handled the whole thing terribly
He isn't the only ref rigging, Stern and Silver employed an entire league of corrupt officials to do their bidding.

atlanta is known for thta
Atlanta has a weird history with trades in all sports. The Falcons had no idea Favre would become a Hall of Fame QB in Green Bay. Without Pirates manager Jim Leyland flipping his lid, Barry Bonds could have spent much of the 90's in Atlanta via trade.
I'm from Atlanta let's please not go there !

That was NOT a normal shove from Ben Wallace.
Wallace should have got a bigger suspension. The Pacers were destroyed by all the suspensions that year and they still made it past the second round of the playoffs.
@@Vichedges they lost in the 2nd round to the Pistons that season. The year before that they lost to the Pistons in the ECF

Ben Wallace had almost zero basketball talent. He would not make an NBA roster today ala Kenneth Faried
Joshua Frick he has 4 defensive player of the year awards and had a season with 15 rebounds a game lmaooo
I love how he has books and papers all over the table like this is one of the most complex moments in nba history when it really comes down to someone throwing a beer at a huge guy😂

As a Pacers fan, it breaks my heart to think of what could have been for that seasons Pacer team. I will go to my grave believing that if this had never happened, the Pacers would have won them a ring that year. And it's just sad for me to remember this.
Who's here because of the new released documentary, Malice at the Palace on Netflix?
It's crazy because had this brawl not happened it would've changed the course of history. Detroit would've never won that series against Indiana with a full squad without that suspension and Reggie Miller would've gotten his first ring. As I believe with my Lakers being a mess going into the NBA finals that indiana would've beaten the Lakers.
This happened after My Pistons beat the Lakers and full squad Indiana would've been shut down still
@@TheJSexton24 I liked Detroit coming into that season but indiana was hungry and was on a mission to dethrone Detroit and get Reggie Miller a ring. That was the reason they got Stephen Jackson from the spurs and other players to beat Detroit in the NBA finals that year.
Until 2013 that team was the Pacers best chance to win a Championship
I for some reason don't think that Pacers team would've had as good of a chance. They were perfect to upset the Lakers
Stern woulda had NBA refs rig it for Fakers.
That "Cup" changed the the NBA as we know it...
Teams like the Golden State Warriors wouldn't even been Champions if the Refs still allowed Hard Fouls like back in the Day.

Amazing how much tighter security in the NBA, and pretty much ALL US pro sports, has gotten since Ben Wallace mushed Ron Artest.
Javian Johnson I think that’s more the result of various terrorist attacks and fan on fan violence rather than this fight. None of the additional security would stop someone from throwing their stadium-bought drink at a player.
