🙏🏼🙏🏼 Thank You, I was "Was" and "Had" borderline diabetes and High blood pressure and by making small changes in my food and increasing my daily exercise Meditation 🧘‍♀️ and Prayer I have been off all meds and loosing weight and have enjoyed my life and relationships with others. There is no quick fix or perfect pill. I enjoyed this video. I now believe I can go back to the meds and depression if I go back to the way of eating and living as I did in the past. Thank you for the wellness you bring to our lives by your medical talents. Peace to your Spirit! Live well Doc and Be well 😘

Check out a great RUclips video called The Food Revolution 2011 This video talks about the low carb high fat (LCHF) diet and mentions the 2 year investigation into LCHF which this Diabetes UK article talks about…
      Low Carb High Fat Diet
Written by Editor on January 15, 2019 · Last reviewed on June 10, 2022
The low carb, high fat diet (LCHF diet) has developed a strong following in Scandinavia, having originated in Sweden.
The story goes that Swedish GP Dr Annika Dahlqvist was subject to an investigation after being reported for recommending a low carb, high fat diet to her patients.
The investigation though cleared Dr Dahlqvist of wrong doing based on their findings that her methods were scientifically sound.
What is the low carb, high fat diet?
As the name suggests, the diet suggests eating high fat and low carbohydrate foods.
      Who is the diet for?
The diet, because of its low requirement for insulin, has been recognised by the Swedish government as being suitable for people with type 2 diabetes and as helpful to individuals looking to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.
Which foods can I eat on the LCHF diet? - Green light foods
The following foods are compliant with the diet:
Dairy : natural yoghurt, cheese, cream, butter
      Meat
      Fish
      Eggs
      Vegetables
Olive oil and canola oil (organically grown and cold-pressed)
      Home made sauces
The recommendation of the low carb, high fat diet is that people eat full fat versions of dairy food in preference to low fat options.
The diet does not rule out fatty meats and instead encourages people to leave the fat on rather than removing it.
Organic versions of foods are suggested where possible.
What food can I have up to moderate amounts? - Amber light foods
The following foods can be eaten in moderate amounts:
      Bean and lentils
      Nuts, almonds and sunflower seeds
      Fruit (not including dried fruit)
Chocolate with a high cocoa quantity (65 to 90%)
Sausages can be eaten occasionally but can include undesirable additives.
Alcohol can be included with the note that it is fattening and can lead to imbalances in blood sugar.
What should be avoided on the diet? - Red light foods
The diet suggests that only a minimal amount of the following should be eaten:
Potato, rice, bread, flour and corn based products
Other cereal-based products - such as pasta, pastry, biscuits and breakfast cereals.
      Dried fruit
      Sweets and cakes
      Sugary drinks
      Margarines
Omega-6 based oils - such as corn, sunflower, safflower, soybean and peanut oil
How can I find more information about the LCHF diet?
A great introduction is the book, ‘Diabetes, No thanks’.
The book is an English language description of one man’s journey from his diagnosis of diabetes, through to controlling his diabetes with the diet alone.”

But the problem isn’t just added sugars. If you get a continuous glucose monitor you will see things like cereals, pastas, potatoes all raise you BG levels a lot (especially if you are insulin resistant)…meaning your body must produce a lot of insulin to bring down those glucose levels. The fact is that doctors need to put their patients on CGMs LONG before any other therapy. That continuous stream of data will quickly teach anyone what they can and cannot eat. Their weight will drop. Their hbA1C will drop. Their hypertension will drop. You will be de-prescribing a lot of medications.

The added sugar in our typical north American diet is a time bomb! I learned this from Dr Fung. With an aic of 5.9 recently I have gone on a one meal a day intermittent fasting plan and cut out all added sugar and most dietary sugar (fruits). The fasting makes it easier to adhere to but MAN ditching sugar is almost as hard as it was to stop smoking! (after 15 years @ 40)

    • @ScarlettDuchess

I had severe chronic insulin resistance for decades. My insulin was sky high even after a 16 hour fast for a blood test. I reversed this by removing all refined sugar from my diet. I used to craved sugar so severely for decades and I was only able to stop after correcting magnesium levels in particular as well as vitamin B12 and the final piece of the puzzle omega 3. I went from severe sugar cravings to none!
I switched to eating fruit for dessert. Red delicious apples, ripe bananas, pears in natural juice, watermelon, green grapes, oranges, strawberries. And use raw honey as a substitute for sugar. My diet still contains white rice, white potatoes, pasta, 100% orange juice with pulp, puff pastry, freshly baked bread when I get around to making it (so good with butter and vegemite lol).

Dr. Mike: you state that high insulin isn't related to or caused by high glucose, most of the time.
Effectively, you're suggesting diabetes is not caused by high glucose but by high insulin due to insulin resistance. No issues with your logic here.
You then propose limiting carb and sugar in diet to control diabetes, but how is attenuating carb intake going to control insulin resistance since you yourself stated there isn't a connection between blood glucose and insulin?
This is a non sequitur. It doesn't follow and a leap in logic.
As for exercise, I do recall some preliminary studies suggesting fatty deposits within muscle blunting insulin receptivity within muscles, but that's entirely speculative at the moment.
Personally, I think there's some truth to this and suspect this primarily is a lifestyle issue, in that insulin resistance is related to being overfat, not necessarily overweight, and BMI isn't helpful as a personal assesment tool here. Therefore, limiting carbs all you want won't improve insulin resistance if you continue to be overfat.
Let's not lose sight of the big picture. Body composition needs to be the goal, and nutrition as well as exercise are tools to improve health markers. Obsessing over one macro ingredient in that big picture seems to me to be counterproductive.

I’m trying to mend my relationship with food because diabetes, kidney disease and high blood pressure run in my family unfortunately and I know if I don’t get control of it now it’ll happen to me too. I have binge eating disorder so it’s been hard and being in my toxic relationship is also not helping me mend anything. I try to watch my portions but yeah I’ve got a long way to go as I need to lose around 100 pounds or more to be at a healthy weight. @Michaela valek~ you have some challenges to overcome to gain control of your physical and mental health, but awareness is a gift. Read the other comments and you will find some interesting perspectives that may help you on your journey. Portion control, daily exercise (walking), fresh air, adequate water intake, and adequate sleep all contribute to physical and mental health. You mention Keto, also consider Weight Watchers or TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), they offer peer support. If you have not done so this year, schedule a visit with your Doctor for a physical. You can discuss your concerns, options for healthy changes, and get lab work done to see your baselines for sugar, cholesterol, kidney function, thyroid, etc. You can do anything you set your mind to, you are strong and capable. Anything and anyone that does not add value and support for you to be your best, does not deserve your time or care. Best of luck to you, be safe and be well.

So, the improvements I’ve made in diet and exercise will improve insulin levels, too? (See my first comment, please for the changes I made). It’s depressing to learn that I got kidney damage before my blood sugar level we up, I never ate a sugary diet, drank soda, or ate processed foods, desserts or candy, etc., but did eat simple carbs. We weren’t allowed to eat sugar in my childhood, so I never developed a taste for them. Those carbs were so vigorously promoted as a healthier than a diet containing fats! The low-fat diet recommendations were disastrous for Americans’ health, we are all much fatter, more diabetic, have more CV disease, and are overall sicker than before. I always ate so carefully, according to the best, then-current recommendations, but ended up with excess body fat, hyperlipidemia (this might be genetic), incipient diabetes, fatty liver, etc.

I was diagnosed with type 2 about 6 years ago. I keep tight control of my A1C which is 5.4. I take 35u of Lantus. Do you believe that stopping Lantus would be beneficial? • @kimberlyperrotis8962

My doctor told me my A1C was creeping up and to change my diet to prevent Type II diabetes. This I immediately did, by eliminating all sugar, processed foods and simple carbs (except for two servings daily of fresh fruit, its nutrition, water and fiber content offsets its simple sugars), including bread, pasta, rice, starchy veggies, and potatoes. I was able to reduce it further by daily 60-minute walks, which also caused 40-lb. weight loss, helping even more. But how do I know if I have insulin resistance? I do have mild fatty liver disease and hyperlipidemia since my youth (taking med for that), but low blood pressure, annoyingly low, I can faint if I stand up too fast from bending or squatting, etc., but that’s been lifelong and seems to be familial.

So in my case, my Dr. checked the amount of insulin and my a1c. My insulin hormone level was all normal but my a1c was elevated. I will need to take medication to increase my cells insulin sensitivity rather than take external insulin.

So, I noticed he goes out of his way to mention the problem with the diet is eliminating processed foods, so Doctor, can I fix my insulin resistance by eating a diet full of fruit? after all they are "natural"

    • @ScarlettDuchess
      @ScarlettDuchess 2 года назад

Yes I did just that. I had severe insulin resistance for decades with sky high insulin levels (even after a 16 fast for a blood test). I reversed my severe insulin resistance removing all refined sugar from my diet. I started eating fruit for dessert instead and use raw honey as a sugar substitute as well. Both fruit and raw honey are anti inflammatory for a start. Insulin resistance and diabetes are inflammatory conditions. But a notable difference is with digestion of the sugars. It’s easy to spill over refined sugar to the liver as it’s high dose fructose.
“Low doses of fructose are ~90% cleared by the intestine, with only trace fructose but extensive fructose-derived glucose, lactate, and glycerate found in the portal blood. High doses of fructose (≥1 g/kg) overwhelm intestinal fructose absorption and clearance, resulting in fructose reaching both the liver and colonic microbiota.”
“We were surprised to find that the small intestine metabolizes almost all dietary fructose, especially for modest doses of fructose like those found in fruit,” explains Rabinowitz. Data from the present study show that ∼90% of dietary fructose is converted into glucose and other metabolites, such as lactate and glycerate, by the small intestine before it reaches the liver.
The researchers found that they could overload the metabolizing capacity of the small intestine by feeding mice a high dose of fructose. When the small intestine was saturated with fructose, increased amounts of unmetabolized fructose entered the liver and some even entered the colon, where it fed the microbiota. The researchers propose that the small intestine shields or protects the liver from fructose toxicity.”

Makes sense, but what about all those (no sugar) products that sweeten your food? They add no calories but do they trigger an insulin response? Is it even dangerous to over-sweet with these fluids/powders/tablets the food and get chronic diseases either way?

I had severe insulin resistance for decades. I ate a high % of refined sugar in my diet. But at the same time I was eating intermittent fasting style and low calories which explains why I never had high glucose levels, fatty liver or diabetes.
But my insulin was very high on labs even after a 16 hour fast. I did reverse my insulin resistance removing all refined sugar from diet (only possible to stop my severe sugar cravings with magnesium in particular, vitamin B12 and omega 3..I was deficient in all 3). I remember waking up clear headed and alert. So novel! I easily lost weight - in total 23 kg
with no effort. I also felt hungry once the insulin went down.
My symptoms of chronically high insulin included AN - acanthosis nigricans…first noticed dark skin on my elbows age 15 but showed up elsewhere on the back of my neck and armpits, no waist - waist hip ratio was like 0.94 from memory, could not lose weight even when I did a job walking for hours a day for a year (my blood pressure and heart rate were excellent due to all the exercise), very large buffalo hump on the back of my neck, fatigue/lethargic, not clear headed, grew 3cms in my 30’s from 172 cm to 175 cm!, reduced appetite, loss of magnesium and zinc (and the long list of symptoms from both!), cellular hypothyroidism, kidneys not up to scratch although seems fine if I don’t tax it with daily magnesium…I had kidney failure from low dose daily magnesium, an ugh feeling of just getting out of the ocean and all sticky from the salt water and then being sunburnt lol I guess it’s a neurological symptom.
