    As a current VCU Arts student, I've never felt so deeply proud of Richmond as I did watching this. It's easy to get caught in the grit of the city when you live here - its pitfalls and VCU's own shortcomings - but you're absolutely right about Richmond. The VMFA is perhaps one of my favorite museums ever for its honesty and approachable atmosphere and the /absolutely amazing/ professors here are the entire reason I'm still here. The art here unapologetically passionate and its artists equal parts genius and approachable.
    So thank you for this video, and I'm going to go do my art projects with even more fervor and love - for it and the city that made it all possible for me. :>

    As a native I wish you had focused more on our murals, they're beautiful and a wonderful move in the right direction. As someone who grew up there, these paintings gives us reason to explore town, and makes my hometown one that I really can rediscover through the art everyone I return.

    I'm really impressed by the city's willingness to confront its dark history of slavery head on through art. As a lifelong Texan, I'm all too familiar with the gross tendency of communities to whitewash the past. Richmond seems like a really cool town and I *really* want one of those biscuits.

      +Isaac Davis If you enjoyed Austin before it got congested, corporate, and expensive, you'll love Richmond. Quirky, funky, live and let live type culture.

      As a lifelong Texan who is also a person of colored I never felt like the story of African Americans or others was "whitewashed" in the public schools I've attended. Actually most of my teachers "walked on eggshells" to really not offend people of different ethnicities. It was kinda annoying, as a kid and teen growing up, I thought, "Why are you telling me what I should be offended about?" We heard of how the Confederates were low caste evil people. When I got older and educated myself, I realized how much of America's history is not one sided.

    I love these art trip episodes so much! It always takes me at least half an hour to watch a video like this one because I have to pause it to take a closer look at the art, which is one of the things I like most about them. I can watch them again and again and still find something in a shot that I haven't really looked at before. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for providing insight into those interesting and beautiful places (that I will probably never get to visit myself). I can't wait to see the art assignments of the artists mentioned in the video!

    As an undergrad I get y our exhibitions suck. It's because we are still learning and experimenting. But for those who attend these exhibitions don't criticize for quality or meaning since that's the professor's job. My recommendation is instead to look at the potential the artists have and try to keep tabs on the ones that interest you throughout the years. Who knows what this could lead to for you or the artist but it's certainly an interesting experiment rather than analyze the exhibition in the short term. Remember it is merely a stepping stone.

    Thanks for another great video! This video actually gave me some clarification. I am currently trying to obtain a degree in History but was also discouraged by the thought of abandoning my love of Art. I have struggled to see in what way these two could be brought together, but this video has given me some insight on that and I thank you!

    Ah! I live a few hours away from Richmond, and the VA Museum of Fine Arts is one of my favorite museums I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot of museums in DC. (One reason is because of their stained glass/ Louis Comfort Tiffany collection, and I do stained glass work.) I get to go there again in the beginning of May. I'm super excited they got to go! Also, I was very happy to learn that Paul Ryan is teaching at Mary Baldwin! I'm going there in the fall!

    What a great tour, thank you! I have one pedantic comment- for "the view that named Richmond" one must look the opposite direction from what is shown. It's an idyllic view east over the James River, not the (also great) view west over the city. Excuse my OCD!

    So glad you made it to RVA. This was a great video except for one thing: Lamplighter is the worst local coffee you could get. So for anyone who visits RVA, any one of these would be better: Alchemy Coffee, 10 Italian Cafe, Sefton Coffee, Rostov’s, Captain Buzzy’s Beanery, Urban Farmhouse, Black Hand Coffee, Shock Espresso and Roastery, Stir Crazy Cafe RVA, TaZa Coffee and Tea, Crossroads Coffee and Ice Cream

    you talk about how specific collectors have shaped the collections at the vmfa, and i wish you had gone into more detail about the work of sydney and frances lewis, since their two collections (mid to late 20th century art and art nouveau/art deco decorative arts) are two cornerstones of the museum and reflect their singular personalities and relationships.

      +L. Lee Butler Yes, I read about them and was awed by their insightfulness and generosity to the institution. There is so much about the VMFA I didn't discuss. It has a huge collection, and I'm sorry to have only touched on one small aspect of it. Thanks for bringing them in to the discussion.

    At the risk of offending even more people, could you elaborate on why you are usually unimpressed by undergraduate shows? :P -person who used to organize undergraduate art shows (I promise I won't be offended haha).

    • @theartassignment
      @theartassignment  8 лет назад +14

      +ARTiculations Oh shoot. I didn't think you'd be one of the offended, Betty! So, truth be told, I almost always enjoy seeing undergraduate shows, it's just that they are usually wildly uneven. Like you've got a lot of skill and potential on display, but it just needs to bake in the oven a little longer. And it's not that the VCU show was perfection, and I think the artists still need to proverbially bake a little longer, but the work seemed more mature than I was expecting. Does that make sense?

    • @ARTiculations
      @ARTiculations 8 лет назад +4

      Haha no I am actually not offended at all. some of our shows were terrible and I think we could have used more a critical eye at the time. And I pretty much agree with your points :)

    Dear Art Assignment,
    I love how you interview contemporary artists, but I would like to know more on how to support artists. I understand the importance of supporting and appreciating the culture industry, but I would also like your eloquent impute and advice. If you could make a video on how to find local artists and the best ways to support artists that would be great. Sincerely, a fan of the channel.

    Now I am shure you probably don't take suggestions on this mater, but non the less I recently through the exhibition Cafeteria found out about the artist Elvira Finnigan who seemed like she would be a good fit for The Art Assignment. I also think you might enjoy Winnipeg, we have a very vital art community which has tended to develop in relative isolation.

    Oh - regarding the VMOFA - barely scratched the surface on its collections. On VCU art and local galleries - I’ve seen better art on a manga doodle - Jus say’n!
