As is the case with any large group of enthusiasts, occasionally a tiny handful of overly exuberant and demanding folks will make less than kind comments. These I call “Angelistas” Don’t let them deter you or diminish your enjoyment in any way.
It's easy to see why it's so often requested. A true tour de force in style and arrangement. There was a picture of Screamin Jay Hawkins on the candle she was holding at the start. Laughing in bewilderment and disbelief is not unusual or unexpected. Nine year old girls don't do this...oh,right...it's Angelina. Another good one, Leo.

This video was a tribute to Screaming Jay Hawkins, who wrote the song and was the first to record it. She has videos of four other performances of the song and all the others are much tamer than this one, with many fewer growls and such. They are all still wonderful! Leo it is about time you got to this one! Not related to this awesome performance but interesting the other day Borger Borgersen posted a comment saying, "Million Miles" is also dedicated to her late grandfather. However, this is an original she wrote some time after he passed away. The song was supposed to be released in an album of originals soon after AGTtC had finished February 2020, but the Covid-19 situation delayed those plans. Instead this song and others from her album was presented for the boss at Republic Records and she was hired soon after. Angelina became their top priority new artist. This indicates we have a lot of new original songs from Angelina to look forward to. Her manager told Angelina will be promoted globally as soon as it's possible to do so.
Angelina has lost both grandfathers. One in March 2018 for whom she dedicated "Always On My Mind" and gave a eulogy on Facebook, and another grandfather in November 2019. IMO, "Million Miles" is dedicated to him, and as Angelina said, "anyone that has lost a loved one," as she stated in a Nov. 16, 2020 Patreon post.

Note at the beginning you see her writing notes which she gave to the director. You see him smiling. These were her changes to the instrumentals. He has stated that she was very polite as she wrote “my wishes”. There are videos of her with this group where she is interacting with the musicians to get the sound she wants. Lore has it that musicians call her the boss. Imagine this group leaving this session and what they talked about among themselves, friends and family. I can imagine there consternation in trying to explain. How to explain what they had just been part of. I believe they knew they had just made history.

Singing at school functions etc. Busy five and six year old. Note on a night she could not sleep at age six she took her mother’s pad and found Billie Holiday to whom she gives credit for the singer she is today.

Angelina has performed this song a number of times, that I have seen, and she doesn't abuse her voice the way she did in this performance. So no need to worry about that. Seeing her live performance of Million Miles filmed in black and white reminds me of this performance.

Before I even get into your reaction I had to pause the video to comment, because of your preamble. I became a huge Angelina fan after this song popped into my recommendations a few years ago. I immediately (after re-watching this one a dozen times) started searching out other songs by her. By the time I'd listened to five or six others I'd become a fan for life. And now, a hundred plus songs later, the first thing I always do when I write a comment (on any subject - not just for Angelina songs and reactions) is re-read it to myself prior to hitting the comment button and ask myself: 'If Angelina were to somehow read this, would she approve?'. If the answer is yes, then I hit the button. If the answer is in any way ambiguous then I rewrite the comment or delete it. Leo, she's done this song several times since but, this is THE version which is best. The scene in the beginning was when the band director was handed a piece of paper suggesting changes for the music from Angelina. That photo was of Screamin' Jay Hawkins who recorded this years earlier and his version is what Angelina used to make it into her own. A true Angelina classic. The ending is spectacular with at long, perfect note!

I said this on one other reaction - but I'll repeat myself - That last note is simply remarkable. I don't know if it is the equipment or what but listen very closely - it's like she gets a double tone - like she's exciting an upper partial - harmonic - or something!! Just WOW!
Angelina takes the hugely entertaining freak show of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and preserves its soul, but turns it into a musical tour de force way beyond the original. Vocally, she can take liberties for a singular studio performance that would be harmful in the long run, having a lot of fun with all what she can do, but really shouldn’t. (It’s like the shaman’s prodigy daughter going bonkers with all of dad’s potions while he is off siring new offspring.) No doubt people around her knew this, and her live performances of this song are stunning in other ways - like doing that long bridge part on two breaths instead of three, and holding the final note several bars longer. Pretty insane stuff, but less obvious than this firework edition. So it is not that she lost any of her capabilities after this (very much to the contrary). She is just treating her remarkable instrument wisely.

It became his most popular a song, and he first sang it the year he wrote it with a very theatrical performance, in that he was carried on to the stage in a coffin, rising from it to begin singing when the music started. Angelina needs no such gimmicks in the tribute to him. She just rearranged both the lyrics and melody until she was satisfied that it was as she wanted it to sound and you've just listened to the result. Several things worthy of noting in the video: at the beginning she is writing some notes, which she hands to the pianist, who smiles. These are her i"wishes" (instructions) to the ban how she wishes them to play the music. She has chosen and arranged every song she has performed. Her fans call it "Angelina-fying" a song. You will then catch a brief glimpse of Angelina's maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani, a very well known and respected Iranian artist and poet, and the person instrumental in encouraging Angelina's singing and introducing her to the old classics, especially jazz. You are right there have been many vocal coaches who see this and say it can damage a child's vocal ability if they do these technics too often once in a while would be ok. They have said once her vocal cords and throat have completely stopped growing then it would not be a problem, that would be around 18 or 20.
I have watched many, many reactions to this video and laughing or weird face-pulls are normal, as is total speechlessness! True AJ fans understand but some get a little overprotective (believe me she doesn't need protecting, she's sweet but has a good head on those shoulders) so don't worry too much yeah?

She was sick at the time with a flu or cold but insisted on performing because she’s a professional. Her voice was affected by the cold and was raspier. I agree with this comment, and it’s not about being disrespectful to you, Leo. I’m glad to see Angelina’s base of fans expanding. I understand that you enjoy her singing greatly, but what I don’t understand is how you can get any sense of the artistic performance as a whole when you stop a three minute song maybe 15 times the first time you’re hearing it. And you sometimes stop in the middle of a vocal phrase. I obviously enjoy seeing people react to Angelina, but the main reason I watch reactions is that it gives me opportunities to hear Angelina singing. For me, there has to be a balance. If you saved the bulk of your comments for when the song is over, I think we’d get a better sense of your thoughts about the performance, and you would have a better feel for how the various amazing things Angelina does come together as an artistic whole.

@Leo I have no idea how the copyright rules work, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen more pauses in a short song than this one. If you’re saying that you pause the video as frequently as you do to comply with RUclips rules, I can’t comment because I know nothing about it. This video was a tribute to Screaming Jay Hawkins, who wrote the song and was the first to record it. She has videos of four other performances of the song and all the others are much tamer than this one, with many fewer growls and such. They are all still wonderful!

Leo it is about time you got to this one! Not related to this awesome performance but interesting the other day Borger Borgersen posted a comment saying, "Million Miles" is also dedicated to her late grandfather. However, this is an original she wrote some time after he passed away. The song was supposed to be released in an album of originals soon after AGTtC had finished February 2020, but the Covid-19 situation delayed those plans.
Instead this song and others from her album was presented for the boss at Republic Records and she was hired soon after. Angelina became their top priority new artist. This indicates we have a lot of new original songs from Angelina to look forward to. Her manager told Angelina will be promoted globally as soon as it's possible to do so.
Angelina has lost both grandfathers. One in March 2018 for whom she dedicated "Always On My Mind" and gave a eulogy on Facebook, and another grandfather in November 2019. IMO, "Million Miles" is dedicated to him, and as Angelina said, "anyone that has lost a loved one," as she stated in a Nov. 16, 2020 Patreon post.

Note at the beginning you see her writing notes which she gave to the director. You see him smiling. These were her changes to the instrumentals. He has stated that she was very polite as she wrote “my wishes”. There are videos of her with this group where she is interacting with the musicians to get the sound she wants. Lore has it that musicians call her the boss. Imagine this group leaving this session and what they talked about among themselves, friends and family. I can imagine there consternation in trying to explain. How to explain what they had just been part of. I believe they knew they had just made history.

Watching a nine year old turning to various musicians telling them what to do and mid note telling piano player “Higher” all while Mother setting there scrolling through her phone while Grandmother films. Her Mother once stated her job was to put the brakes on. We have seen how that worked.

In interview on Norwegian TV with her Mother and Sister after winning Norway’s Got Talent her Mother made that statement. Considering she is in school taking normal third grade classes she is also in after school program taking.

It’s obvious your laughter is an expression of amazement and shock of how the image of this adorable child contradicts the talent and voice control of a 50 year old jazz singer. At the risk of repeating myself, I would suggest again to let the video play much longer between pauses. Before I even get into your reaction I had to pause the video to comment, because of your preamble.
I became a huge Angelina fan after this song popped into my recommendations a few years ago. I immediately (after re-watching this one a dozen times) started searching out other songs by her. By the time I'd listened to five or six others I'd become a fan for life.
And now, a hundred plus songs later, the first thing I always do when I write a comment (on any subject - not just for Angelina songs and reactions) is re-read it to myself prior to hitting the comment button and ask myself: 'If Angelina were to somehow read this, would she approve?'. If the answer is yes, then I hit the button. If the answer is in any way ambiguous then I rewrite the comment or delete it. I doubt I'm the only one who does this, but now I have confirmation, so thank you for that.
Now - on to the reaction. I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Leo, she's done this song several times since but, this is THE version which is best. The scene in the beginning was when the band director was handed a piece of paper suggesting changes for the music from Angelina. That photo was of Screamin' Jay Hawkins who recorded this years earlier and his version is what Angelina used to make it into her own. A true Angelina classic. The ending is spectacular with at long, perfect note!

I said this on one other reaction - but I'll repeat myself - That last note is simply remarkable. I don't know if it is the equipment or what but listen very closely - it's like she gets a double tone - like she's exciting an upper partial - harmonic - or something!! Just WOW!
Angelina takes the hugely entertaining freak show of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and preserves its soul, but turns it into a musical tour de force way beyond the original. Vocally, she can take liberties for a singular studio performance that would be harmful in the long run, having a lot of fun with all what she can do, but really shouldn’t. (It’s like the shaman’s prodigy daughter going bonkers with all of dad’s potions while he is off siring new offspring.) No doubt people around her knew this, and her live performances of this song are stunning in other ways - like doing that long bridge part on two breaths instead of three, and holding the final note several bars longer. Pretty insane stuff, but less obvious than this firework edition. So it is not that she lost any of her capabilities after this (very much to the contrary). She is just treating her remarkable instrument wisely.
Her kongsberg audio-only performance of this is also superb vocally...
And don't forget the Little Big Stars in Germany!

This song was written by the American singer/songwriter Screamin' Jay Hawkins in 1956. It became his most popular a song, and he first sang it the year he wrote it with a very theatrical performance, in that he was carried on to the stage in a coffin, rising from it to begin singing when the music started. Angelina needs no such gimmicks in the tribute to him. She just rearranged both the lyrics and melody until she was satisfied that it was as she wanted it to sound and you've just listened to the result. Several things worthy of noting in the video: at the beginning she is writing some notes, which she hands to the pianist, who smiles. These are her i"wishes" (instructions) to the ban how she wishes them to play the music. She has chosen and arranged every song she has performed. Her fans call it "Angelina-fying" a song. Back to the video. You will then catch a brief glimpse of Angelina's maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani, a very well known and respected Iranian artist and poet, and the person instrumental in encouraging Angelina's singing and introducing her to the old classics, especially jazz. Then you will see Angelina holding a candle with a picture of Hawkins on it. Lastly - and for me the most noteworthy - is the way the 9-year-old child who has just performed an iconic song in a way that will never be bettered - changes from "performance mode" of a 49-year-old black woman who has been singing jazz for over 35 years, to the shy and humble child she is, with her hand on her chin, possibly wondering whether her next performance of the song could be bettered.
You are overly concerned about Angelina's vocal cords. She has been closely guided by a vocal coach at the music academie where she's been studying since 6 years old. Here she is nine and is exploring astounding jazz techniques where angels fear to tread. Take it easy.

You are right there have been many vocal coaches who see this and say it can damage a child's vocal ability if they do these technics too often once in a while would be ok. They have said once her vocal cords and throat have completely stopped growing then it would not be a problem, that would be around 18 or 20.

Leo, I already left a comment about the reaction. But just wanted to add a request. Angelina performed “I’ll be there” (Jackson 5) when she was 8 or 9. She was sick at the time with a flu or cold but insisted on performing because she’s a professional. Her voice was affected by the cold and was raspier. Leo, she took your advice & never sang this song like this again. She must have been warned by someone about injuring her vocal chords. She recorded it many times after this, but never like this. This is one for the history books, IMO. I enjoyed this reaction much more than the previous one, so you are getting your stride. We can see how much Angelina's brilliance affects you , so it's really needless to apologize constantly.. As a suggestion ,and please don't take this as an affront or a disparaging comment, I recommend that you watch other reviewers such as Greywolf, Smiileyface,Cecil Dover, Valerie Williams, ,just to name a few who are successful at managing to avoid copyright issues and not pausing constantly.. They are very popular with Angelina fans as their reviews are 'seamless' and are of high quality of sound . I know you are just a beginner/novice at this reviewing game and most likely you'd continue in your discoverry journey with Angelina, So it's my hope that you will take on board what other successful reactors are doing do you can capture a whole lot more Of Angelina subscribers out there. I agree with this comment, and it’s not about being disrespectful to you, Leo. I’m glad to see Angelina’s base of fans expanding. I understand that you enjoy her singing greatly, but what I don’t understand is how you can get any sense of the artistic performance as a whole when you stop a three minute song maybe 15 times the first time you’re hearing it. And you sometimes stop in the middle of a vocal phrase. I obviously enjoy seeing people react to Angelina, but the main reason I watch reactions is that it gives me opportunities to hear Angelina singing. For me, there has to be a balance. If you saved the bulk of your comments for when the song is over, I think we’d get a better sense of your thoughts about the performance, and you would have a better feel for how the various amazing things Angelina does come together as an artistic whole.
I normally would agree, but with this song I thought the reaction was fine, noting the basis of each unusual style in her performance was very interesting to me, not sure he would be able to remember all of it after the end.

@Leo I have no idea how the copyright rules work, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen more pauses in a short song than this one. If you’re saying that you pause the video as frequently as you do to comply with RUclips rules, I can’t comment because I know nothing about it. But I haven’t watched any other reactors (and I’ve probably watched thousands of reactions) who felt they needed to stop as often as you did.
