Here's what was amazing about Bobby... he NEVER sang this song the same way twice, and made it work every single time. What an amazing performer. Rest in Peace, my friend.
Bobby Darin is amazing. He fit into one generation and then into the next, such a cool guy, an artist. Jazz is too much for some young artists, but Bobby Darin knew jazz, and took his music into another venue. He had a great heart, and so sad that he went out of this life with a heart that couldn't last as long as his Soul. Bobby was a wonderful person, a wonderful Soul, a brilliant musician, and an Artist in his time, and into the future. What a great artist and a cool guy he was! He is very well loved.
Awesome to see this and Bobby so full of life, drop dead gorgeous, sexy, self confidence, happy to give his audience what they want, so full of charm which makes any woman go week at the knees. Recoding this song was Bobby's genius, making it his own, for it continued launching his career into the stratosphere. What a voice, a genius, master of his own making, multi-talented, singer/ song writer, and actor to top it all. There was no stopping Bobby until that fateful day of December 20th, 1973. God took him home to rest, now he sings with the angels above. RIP!!
I absolutely love this song. I was a little kid when it came out and I use to dance to it.How 105 people voted thumbs down is beyond me.Guess they don't appreciate his charisma, style and one of the finest male vocalists we've ever had. Thank you to whomever downloaded this for the rest of us to enjoy. Rest In Peace Bobby with Dusty Spreingfield, Elvis,Whitney Houston and way too many to list. He was only 37 when he died from complications following heart surgery. Micheline Kribs. Rolla,MO
This performance stands as proof that Darin was more than a man gifted with a great singing voice. The way he moves, sings, interacts with everything around him are not only ingenious ways to enhance the experience, but they're so slick and natural that one would think he practically wrote the book on cool.
One of the best songs ever and the best performance ever. A man who was confident of his abilities and rightly so. His performance was all about him loving the song and convincing the audience that they loved it too, they should play this to all new singers with the headline, `This is how its meant to be done`.
Unbelievable the way he builds it to that big finish. Given the rather gory and graphic subject matter of the song, from an objective standpoint, it shows you just how masterful a performer he truly was. Unbelivable vocal timing , phrasing and delivery, and if all that wasn't enough, Bobby even does a few snazzy microphone handling tricks. Pure magic.
Bobby Darin had such incredible musical instinct. His sense of pitch and his rhythm were impeccable. What a joy he was and thank God we have him to watch!! Just excitement that doesn't stop!
I've been listening to several versions of this song tonight, and NO ONE owns it like Darin. He is just completely in control of it, if you know what I mean.
He does have that characteristic swaying of his shoulders that looks cute whether he was fresh out of high school or in his 40s. He delivers this song and a few others with a confidence, if not cockiness, that inspires one's individuality.
Bobby , you knew what it was to sing a protest song and get us all to sing along. Your work for your fellow mans freedoms and civil rights will never be forgotten.
Wow! He was just too smooth man! Love the "live" moment at 1:28 where he says, "yeah go a head if you feel like it", meaning to clap along. His delivery is perfect and from the look on his face you can tell he is enjoying himself totally. And the band backing him was amazing as well!
The pride of the Bronx.Bobby died on 12-20-73 at the age of 37.He knew he wasn't gonna live too long, but despite all that he became a great entertainer and a great human being.
Small, skinny, and very ill- -he still had a huge stage presence, and fanatastic sense of rhythm and vocal flourishes- not too many, just right. Terrific, thanks for posting.
You all have to understand that Bobby is THE definitive vocalist of our time. I am a true fan and believe that his approach to music is THE best ever. I love his music and thank the lord the he was put on this earth... Mikey xx
This was in the days to make it as a singer you had to be good because you were up against Sinatra Martin Davies and co and a young Elvis. Most singers today wouldn't have got passed the doorman on the record labels offices.
Bobby, Your gone, but you brought SO MUCH HAPPINESS TO OUR HOME.My favorite memories of your music, will always be of my Mother and her dancing to your music (45's) on a Saturday and cleaning the house. This was in the 50's,60's. I cannot hear one of your songs and not be there with her. Thank you for that gift.
Again, the perfect person for this song. I don't care who else may sing this song, they will never be able to swing it the way Mr. Darin does. This is HIS song.
I actually remember this performance. It was in c. 1970-71 and Bobby was a guest on "The Flip Wilson Show." He also did a particularly funny sketch with Flip and fellow guest Sid Caesar.
Seriously, truly, literally a perfectly flawless (or flawlessly perfect) song. One of the best ever written and performed. Bobby Darin was a god, and this song is the epitome of amazing. I know I'm gushing, but there's honestly nothing I would or could change about this song to make it better!! lol :)
Buble, Harry Connick, et al are pale reflections of Sinatra. Darin was an original and an all around entertainer..he could sing, dance, played multiple instruments, could do comedy and even impressions. Buble is a voice.
Louis Armstrong recorded it in 1956. Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1958. Darin did his in 1959, and blew the others out of the water. He got his first two Grammies out of it. The ultimate version.
u wanna dance and sing with bobby ..even if the song is about mayhem or whatever..the way he moves and the way he hit the notes and timing ..just flawless...he is one of the best!!!!
Can't believe they could all sit so still during such a PERFORMANCE!! Nice to see that the guys who they made a fuss over such as Bobby Darin were most certainly worth it!
No matter how many times I hear Mr. Darin, I still get goosebumps. There are many covers of Mack the Knife, but no one does it the way he did it. Pure awesomeness.
One of the best songs sung by one of the best singers: It is SO SAD, that he died, when he was 37 - he would be a greater legend, when he would have lived longer....this year he would be only 73 years old!
My Dad used to play his music around the house when he was working on the car outside on hot summer days in Texas. I always loved this song. Just looked it up and I'll be dammed if it still doesn't make my dance and sing along just like when I was a kid. Bobby D. still rocks think I will get some more of his music. What an fantastic memory for me Mack the Knife, summer days and my Dad working on his car. I will never forget any of it.
Darin was in pain while performing during the last years of his life. The audience was well aware of this and sat quietly and just let him sing his heart out. He could sing just about anything and played many instruments. A huge talent gone much too soon.
Bobby oozes confidence, even more so than Frank on this song. And why not? It IS his song. His wasn't the best voice, but the package [voice, mannerism, connection to the audience] was sooo good! I don't know if his riffs were spontaneous or scripted, but either way, he made it work, and then some. THE COOLEST performer of the last 50 years. Now, if you want to debate me on cool, OK, but Bobby set the standard, and if you cannot admit that, then don't come to the forum.
When Frank did this on "L.A is My Lady", he actually added in the lyric the following phrase, ".....Bobby Darin did this song with so much feeling......that 'old blue eyes' he ain't gonna add nothing new....." Frank KNEW and paid proper homage in his version. Listen.
When I was a kid my parents had three albums: Buck Owens - Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat, Willie Nelson - And Then I Wrote, Bobby Darin - The Bobby Darin Story, all three classics. Wore a needle through them.
Saw Bobby perform this at the Sahara Hotel, Vegas in 1961. He was performing with George Burns and was a newcomer at the time. I was mezmerized! He was a great performer.
My mom said this was inert of my grandma's favorite songs (she died in the 70s before I was even thought of)....it's pretty cool I'd discover it and love it all on my own like 5 decades later. Bobby Darin most definitely did this song the best imho.
This is one of the greatest performances and one of THE greatest songs ever made on this planet, and we are so lucky to have had the opportunity to enjoy. Excuse me while I replay it...
Thank you for this. It was my parents song. I watched them jitterbug to this for 50 years, including at their grandchildren’s wedding receptions. Saw them dance to this song after 63 years of marriage 1 month before my mom passed away. They got the dream and danced it…to this song.
Here's what was amazing about Bobby... he NEVER sang this song the same way twice, and made it work every single time. What an amazing performer. Rest in Peace, my friend.
ABSOLUTELY!! that was Bobby Darin’s greatest attribute. His ability to tweak a song every time he sang it. Master of styling a song.
I've watched so many versions and I can't find an old one with all my favorite ad libs, but what an amazing journey it has been
Him and Sinatra were masters at singing them differently every single time they performed ❤❤
Just wonderful. Thank you Bobby, R I P.
this is when one singular person is better at one thing than anyone else on the planet...
Charisma, voice, and class! What a singer! A total showman.
👍🏼👈🎶

You just can't help loving him. He was such a sweetheart
His timing is PERFECT!!.....one of the marks of a GREAT swing singer!
👍🏼👈
Bobby Darin sings this song the best.

You know how much talent these guys had back then when their live version is nearly as good as the studio recording.
Or even better at times
@@zorinabakah8182 macky is back
What a talent!!! I love Bobby.
I was born in 1986, I love Bobby Darin’s music. Timeless

Count yourself blessed if you saw Bobby back in the day live...A great artist indeed!
Bobby was not only a cool cat, he was a very compassionate person who would do anything for his friends.
Bobby just owns this song ❤❤
God those were the days. I'm a man born out of his time.
Same here! I’ve always felt that I should have grown up during this era.
@Charlie: Are you a Millennial and raised on Chief Queef?
Yep, me too.
I did and I'm happy.

Can't stop pressing replay BUTTON.
Nobody does this song better then Bobby. He owns this song.

THE best version of this song EVER!!!! RIP Bobby, you are missed.
How can those people just sit there like rocks and not even clap along or Bob their heads to the beat? This groove is infectious!
What a voice and what sense of rythm the guy has. Love Bobby.
Stunning performance as usual
He's the best at what he does and his videos makes my day whenever I get to watch one🌹
Thats so F incredible.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about swing....about phrasing, dynamics!....and just "pacing"....amazing, personifies CLASS
He was seriously ahead of his time!
Wow! He was just too smooth man! Love the "live" moment at 1:28 where he says, "yeah go a head if you feel like it", meaning to clap along. His delivery is perfect and from the look on his face you can tell he is enjoying himself totally. And the band backing him was amazing as well!

Another Amazing performer cut down in the prime of his life. It was not drugs or alcohol but an infection from dental work that got to his heart.
Always wanted to be as cool as Bobby Darin, needless to say never came close. he was a classy Guy and a helluva talent. still miss him.
Small, skinny, and very ill- -he still had a huge stage presence, and fanatastic sense of rhythm and vocal flourishes- not too many, just right.
Terrific, thanks for posting.

still by far the best performance of Mack the knife
Agreed. No other version even comes close.
This is the era when they could sing better than anyone!
Love this song. Performing it at my next show for the first time : )
Again, the perfect person for this song. I don't care who else may sing this song, they will never be able to swing it the way Mr. Darin does. This is HIS song.

RiP forever! Its 2019 and its still kicking
I actually remember this performance. It was in c. 1970-71 and Bobby was a guest on "The Flip Wilson Show." He also did a particularly funny sketch with Flip and fellow guest Sid Caesar.
This was number one the day my late mum was born
This song is from " 3 penny opera" (1929) Bobby hit #1 with it in 1959!
No need to tear one down to build the other up. Frank and Bobby were both great, and now they are singing duets.
Seriously, truly, literally a perfectly flawless (or flawlessly perfect) song. One of the best ever written and performed. Bobby Darin was a god, and this song is the epitome of amazing. I just listened to them all. NO ONE does it like Bobby. He is THE BEST!!
The best version ever. It's always been my opinion that he came out first with his upbeat take and others followed
BH21206
PERIOD
best version of mtk of all time.
Frank Sinatra agreed
Louis Armstrong recorded it in 1956. Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1958. Darin did his in 1959, and blew the others out of the water. He got his first two Grammies out of it. The ultimate version.
Frank Sinatra did not record this song in 1958. He didn't record it until 1984 with Quincy Jones.
50 years old, amazing
u wanna dance and sing with bobby ..even if the song is about mayhem or whatever..the way he moves and the way he hit the notes and timing ..just flawless...he is one of the best!!!!

Top of his game...
I so regret his going and would have loved to go to his concerts!
He's the best at what he does and his videos makes my day whenever I get to watch one🌹❤️😊
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! talk about a natural entertainer and a great singer

Also a brilliant composer and actor. See Pressure Point, Come September, and Captain Newman MD.
No matter how many times I hear Mr. Darin, I still get goosebumps. There are many covers of Mack the Knife, but no one does it the way he did it. Pure awesomeness.
He's the best at what he does and his videos makes my day whenever I get to watch one🌹❤️
Tis such a pity that modern medicine of the time could not have repaired his heart he had so much of it to give. Miss him
It did. He went to the dentist and didn’t inform them of his rheumatic fever he had as a child.
One of the best songs sung by one of the best singers: It is SO SAD, that he died, when he was 37 - he would be a greater legend, when he would have lived longer....this year he would be only 73 years old!
The great Bobby darin, love this song
I still wish there was a way more people knew about Bobby, if only he were still with us today :/
Always one of my favorite songs, a huge talent, he died so young. A tragic end to a gifted artist.
My Dad used to play his music around the house when he was working on the car outside on hot summer days in Texas. I always loved this song. Just looked it up and I'll be dammed if it still doesn't make my dance and sing along just like when I was a kid. Bobby D. still rocks think I will get some more of his music. It's amazing to watch bobby, and see how much Kevin spacey actually looked like him in the movie beyond the sea! Incredible
L
Kevin Spacey did a magnificent job in the movie! I am always in awe when I listen to Kevin sing these songs, as he is spot on! :-)
Spacey is a karaoke ripoff. And a perv.
Spacey is karaoke, a parasite. Nobody needs a fake, we have plenty of video and audio of the GREAT ONE.
My brother-in-law is in the MTV video of this song. He is a tall, thin; a good-looking Italian...you can't miss him. :-)
He's the best at what he does and his videos makes my day whenever I get to watch one🌹❤️❤
Darin was in pain while performing during the

much too soon.
He's the best at what he does and his videos makes my day whenever I get to watch one🌹
I couldn't agree more. These three "got into" a song like few others. We lost Darin and the King way too soon...but their music lives on.
WOW how good was that ,my favourite singer of all time !!!!!!!!
Bobby Darin is incredible.
He's the best at what he does and his videos makes my day whenever I get to watch one🌹❤️❤

I have to disagree with you Bobby had a way better voice and charisma than Sinatra ever did -- way cuter too.
barrie, if it makes any difference to you, Bobby was Italian, and he died young. I miss his talent. He was a great entertainer.
When Frank did this on "L.A is My Lady", he actually added in the lyric the following phrase, ".....Bobby Darin did this song with so much feeling......that 'old blue eyes' he ain't gonna add nothing new....." Frank KNEW and paid proper homage in his version. Listen.
Michael Towle I didn't know Bobby was Italian. It was always my understanding that he was Polish.
Jane, You may be thinking of Bobby Vinton - Blue Velvet, Blue on Blue... a great voice.
Bobby Darin is a true Mack!
He's the best at what he does and his videos makes my day whenever I get to watch one🌹❤️❤
Band was cookin. Bobby was lean and mean. Virtuoso performance.
A masterpiece! Such a classical song! I would dare to say it has become Timeless! Beautifuly sung by Bobby Darin!
Great Song.
His live at the copa version is excellent too ❤❤
That crowd sucked.... Id been standing on my feet and cheering Sir.Darin
They don't even sway...
lets pretend they were mesmerized.
Annebeth Larsson that's because they listened to music back then, not some stupid screaming girl. which doesn't go all that well with lounge music
36tripleduce Right on. Maybe they actually want to HEAR him instead of just each others screaming.
That's why One Direction are so big.Doesnt matter if they can't sing because no one can hear them anyway.
When I was a kid my parents had three albums: Buck Owens - Together Again/My Heart Skips A Beat, Willie Nelson - And Then I Wrote, Bobby Darin - The Bobby Darin Story, all three classics. Wore a needle through them.

This is from the Flip Wilson Show.
Saw Bobby perform this at the Sahara Hotel, Vegas in 1961. He was performing with George Burns and was a newcomer at the time. I was mezmerized! He was a great performer.
Just heard Yay Hadley on 4BC talking about this song sung by Bobby Darin
My mom said this was inert of my grandma's favorite songs (she died in the 70s before I was even thought of)....it's pretty cool I'd discover it and love it all on my own like 5 decades later. Bobby Darin most definitely did this song the best imho.
"The sound" of the "Big Band" had so much meaning. No like today's rap music. Music was hip and had class. Where is found today?
This is one of the greatest performances and one of THE greatest songs ever made on this planet, and we are so lucky to have had the opportunity to enjoy. Excuse me while I replay it...
best ever, RIP swag
Thank you for this. It was my parents song. I watched them jitterbug to this for 50 years, including at their grandchildren’s wedding receptions. Saw them dance to this song after 63 years of marriage 1 month before my mom passed away. They got the dream and danced it…to this song.
Bobby Darin, foi o melhor da época, superando até mesmo o Frank Sinatra.
OMG..One of my favorites!!!
He's the best at what he does and his videos makes my day whenever I get to watch one🌹❤️❤
