I appreciate that the promotion of Wicked seems to include acknowledge the crew members in addition to the cast much more than I’ve seen for other films!
Costume, sound and set designers clearly put their soul into this project is so nice to see they having to spotlight to breakdown their craft. I suspect the director is a big part of it, he always gives lots of room for cast and crew.
@@SO-ym3zs Well in some cases they did, as you can see in the broomstick flying sequence which was shot entirely on bluscreen. Almost every film I have worked on has had some form of practical set, we basically extend or augment them with CGI, or in a lot of cases entirely replace the set because the director wants more control over the lighting, or to remove or add entire buildings and props etc. While there is definitely more emphasis on practical sets in this film, which is great to see, I don't agree with the way this film has been marketed as basically all practical, and treating the CGI as some kind of dirty word, when it too is hand crafted piece by piece by hundreds of talented artists just like the practical set builders.

It really adds to the liking of a movie when they put that much love into it. Just like how I love that Disney/ Pixar does such extensive research for their animations.
My sister is in school for architecture I’m going to look into something that has to do with directing because I have such a passion for movies & art. I see he has a passion for bringing a vision to life as well. I love it. Very inspiring & interesting ❤️
The set was overseas, and most of it was destroyed because the Strike occurred 5/6ths of the way through filming. A new Munchkinland was built and everything that could be saved post-strike was saved (it will be in Universal Studios FL and California) but there isn’t much.
Everything I'm hearing about this movie makes me feel like a kid again watching the behind the scenes and being mesmerized by the set building and practical effects like Lord of the Rings
Same! I watched ALL the behind the scenes of LOTR movies that they had in the box sets it was fascinating. In comparison the way they moved so much more to CGI in the Hobbit trilogy was disappointing esp in comparison to LOTR.
In defense of The Hobbit Trilogy...Peter Jackson was brought on well after Guillermo del Toro had been working on the film, so he had MONTHS to adapt things compared to the several years of preproduction he had going into LOTR, which is why it was so heavily reliant on CGI

@cac1504 Let's be honest, you wouldn't notice them unless someone told you. Also, the entire broom flight sequence was entirely shot on a bluescreen and replaced with a CG background, did you dislike that part of the movie, or did it blend seamlessly with the rest of it?
@@Slay.On.Me.R.Ea lot of the time the practically filmed things are used as reference which allows the VFX to achieve a realism that is impossible to distinguish as “not real”. Lighting, camera angles, etc.
The film is a visual feast for the eyes. It took me a few scenes to realize how many physical sets and locations are in the movie. Such a breath of fresh air with so many films relying on CG. Crowley and his team absolutely deserve whatever awards they have coming to them. As well as costume design
You actually don't realize there is TONS of CGI on these sets he is drawing. So much of the set you are seeing that he shows gets fully replaced. And people are always diminishing the VFX, yet what you are seeing in the film has way more VFX than these guys are giving credit. It's so sad that hidden VFX gets no appreciation and they try and convince people with these videos that there isn't CGI used.
HALF of the sets you see in the final movie ARE cgi replacements. You're not SEEING practical sets in the final movie. You're being tricked by fake marketing that is throwing the hard working CGI artists under the bus
I think the success of this film is that it respects and appreciates BOTH physical sets and CGI, and allows the VFX to enhance the physical elements and create movie magic that stands the test of time. Nathan Crowley describes this marriage of elements being used for many of the Wicked sets. This video was as enjoyable to watch as the LOTR EE behind-the-scenes videos. I didn’t realize how much I missed seeing physical sets and miniatures being so well used in a film.
THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! !! !!! As an engineer, I was expecting stuffy engineering commentary (and would have loved it), but this guy is amazingly incredible to be able to understand what's likely possible (within time & budget) and push his teams to deliver - WOW! !! !!!
After Barbie, Agatha All Along, and Wicked which uses about 90% of practical effects, I hope studios will start doing more of this. Practical effects looks so much better. VFX is fine but should not be the main ingredient. It should help tune up practical effects/ make up, not take over it.

Not they're not. Most of this was replaced by CGI In the final film. You're not seeing this when you're watching it in the cinema. That feeling you're having was induced by CGI, not practical sets. It's time to give CGI artists the recognition they deserve.
@ Oh don’t get me wrong, as a designer myself I understand deadlines have to be met, and budget has a lot to do with it as well. I appreciate when CGI is meshed well with practical design. If the film itself is just mostly CGI, like how the set designer had mentioned, it lacks dimension; to which most films these days had done. Whilst I see the use of CGI in all formats, overusing them and only relying of them instead of working with set designers can truly enhance the film the same way they did in this movie.

Very important thing to get into consideration: They are not rejecting CGI. They are embracing CGI as a tool to addto the practical effeects and sets, instead of replacing everything with CGI.
This gives extremely Dutch Netherlands vibes! The tulip field the rivers, the greenery and even the village looks like the farmland in the Netherlands 😍
I love the way he talks about the scenes and creating sets that give enough room for movement and keep the eyes interested. Truly someone who loves his job and elevates what he's working on with that love. What an inspiration.
I'm in awe of Nathan Crowley's vision and creativity. The breadth of his imagination is amazing, and kudos to the talent of everyone else involved in this project. They took world building to a whole new level
having to consider all the points around cameras and filming practicalities, the limitations of Wicked universe on top of all the design considerations is soooo impressive

A lot of this WAS replaced with cgi in the final movie, and you didn't notice. Which makes it all the sadder that those artists are thrown under the bus and lied about, with credit going only to those who worked in practical sets.
Not a huge fan of musicals but wow. The sets for this movie were amazing and to hear they were practical is sooooooooooooooooooooooo heartwarming and makes me realize why I love them so much!
I was wondering how they were going to pull off TWO movies that long, when the musical isn’t 4-5 hours itself. Was concerned it might be like the Hobbit, which most assuredly should not have been three films. Fortunately, it was more like LOTR, using lots of practical effects with CGI as an adjunct, not the main event. It never dragged, not even a tiny bit. Truly magical. These movies are going to be classics for sure. Whatever awards they win for sets, costumes, and design will be totally deserved. I saw it this afternoon, and I literally clapped at the end. It’s been a long time since an audience spontaneously clapped for a film, in my experience. Really amazing film, and an excellent adaptation of both the book and the stage musical. I think we will see more musicals after this, as well. They’ve set the bar really high with this movie.

Watching the scenes in the Emerald City I instantly thought of the Großes schauspielhaus in Berlin. Watching this incredible designer speak and hearing more about his references is absolute bliss. His commitment to creating real sets pays off - I am about to see Wicked for the third time in the cinema and a huge part of what is drawing me back is the quality of production design.
Everyone did such an amazing job with this film, I've seen it already 4 times in the cinema's and every time I see something new. Now that I know almost everything is real life built, im even more amazed. Love this movie so much! Definitely one of my favorites ❤🎥🙌

IT. ALL. PAID. OFF! Boy was this movie fantastical, magical, and wonderful through and through. It truly sucked you into the world of Oz.

I want to thank everyone associated with the film and all the audience. This movie is a phenomenon. I couldn't believe that movies still can be magic. It has been so much fun for all my family and friends. The artistry is truly beautiful and moving.

This movie better get an Oscar for sets and costumes and so many behind the scene things. That said, I wish we can put that kind of energy and perseverance and nothing is impossible attitude into helping our country's poor, Global Warming, wealth distribution, and infrastructure.
I started watching this on a small screen - and had to pause and cast it to my TV. I needed to enjoy this THOROUGHLY. Such detail and passion. Thank you so much for doing this, Nathan and team & AD.

Watching the scenes in the Emerald City I instantly thought of the Großes schauspielhaus in Berlin.
Watching this incredible designer speak and hearing more about his references is absolute bliss. His commitment to creating real sets pays off - I am about to see Wicked for the third time in the cinema and a huge part of what is drawing me back is the quality of production design.
Practical effects and set building on location is always the way to go with timeless cinema magic.

Everyone did such an amazing job with this film, I've seen it already 4 times in the cinema's and every time I see something new. Now that I know almost everything is real life built, im even more amazed. Love this movie so much! Definitely one of my favorites ❤🎥🙌
