With the tow trucks and other common vehicles next to it, it is quite apparent how large the Tomcat is.

It's as nice to see the jets as it is these great American heros. Idk if you all know it but these retired pilots are as much to be amazed with as the tech that helped maintain our saftey and global dominance.

They were still using the beautiful tomcat when I served I wish the navy still named the fighters after cats

I’ve had several planes on my trailer. Funny towing these and no one had a height pole.
I'd have LOVED to been on the opposite side of the highway " Yeah, I just passed an F14 going the other way ".
I would have wanted to be there to see those airplanes being brought into the museum area. The Tomcat is the favorite, and the YF-17 which is the F/A-18 fighter jet which was in place after the F-14 retired.
Sidney Mathious the F/A 18 was in service well before the Tomcat was boneyarded.

They should give more details about the YF17, that's the really interesting aircraft as its a prototype and hence extremely rare. I've not heard of it at all in fact, but its obvious its a development/prototype for the FA18. I'm curious about whether there's much difference between the two. I'm glad their saving both though, as even the F14 is getting quite rare now also
YF17 and the YF16 both where prototype for the USAF and as most know F16 won that round but the US Navy want a new fighter jet and YF17 came back to life as the F18 and rest most know both where great jets from the start

The F/A-18 is a god damn minivan. The F-14 was a much higher performance aircraft. If they had taken the money from the F/A-18, and put it into the Tomcats, they would have been FAR superior.
The Super Hornet is a beast. It can do all of the jobs the Cat used to do. And it can turn with an F-16. The old Hornets are garbage though.
@@ppipowerclass Grumman couldn't lighten the Tomcat to compare with the Super Hornet. The Tomcat was built for the Exclusively for Phoenix Missile Systems. In Air to Air the F-14 had trouble against the F/A-18E/F. Also keep in mind the Tomcat was a massive Maintenance Nightmare. As a Retired Naval Aviator having flown over 1868 hours in the Tomcat alone. It was a Dynamic Weapon Platform, but it's mission was completed.

The Tomcat would not be so low to the ground if they would not have bled the nitrogen out of the struts.
I doubt they keep nitrogen on tap for gutted museum birds
And i'm sure they wanted it low to the ground since they had to get under bridges with it.

I'm sure there were many.
Every pilot in the squardon could fly any jet but while in the Squadron the name & callsign of both pilot and rio were assigned to a certain plane.

This aircraft has modex 201 meaning it is the aircraft assigned to the Commanding Officer of the squadron. This of course does not mean other pilots could fly it.
The yf17 us quite tiny
can't the 17 fold the wings up?
I don't think the yf17 can it was originally designed as an Air force advanced fighter to compete the f16. I could be wrong though
May be right although it's marked Navy here. An attempt to appeal to the Navy brass perhaps? Honestly can't see that much visual difference between the F-16 and the YF-17
The differences kind of stand out....YF-17, 2 vertical stabs (tails) F-16 1 vertical stab, YF-17, twin engines F-16 single engine, YF-17 engine intakes (inlets) on the sides of the fuselage, F-16 a single intake under the nose. and lastly YF-17 has a canopy "bow" type frame and the F-16 has a "bubble" canopy. Other than that they do look an awful lot alike...;-)
ed roberts You are correct. Not sure why this particular aircraft has Navy markings on the tail as the YF-17 was never for the navy. The F-18 was derived from the YF-17 but that was it. That particular model if you will had absolutely nothing to do with the navy
Jason Crawford this plane was used like a visual aid so the Navy could have an idea of how the Hornet would look like. This was after the competition with the YF-16. Navy liked two engines back then.

YF17 became the FA18 Hornet?
Yes. It was the competitor to the F-16. Although, it 'lost' the Air force's small fighter competition, the Navy liked it so much they decided to continue its development even further, which eventually led to the F-18.
The YF -17 was originally intended to be a supplement to the F-15 and F-16. For the Air Corps. The Navy liked some of what it could do and it led to the final permutation that was the F-18. The Hornet and Cobra while quite similar at first glance are very different in actuality.
The Cobra is "Offically" a prototype for the Hornet as it led to the 18. But if you look at them side my side you can see many differences in the birds form.
If the Navy was smart those 2 TF30's are at the bottom of the ocean right now, just where they belong.
TheJer1963 yes, those powerplants were awful in the F-14A ... but back in the late 60's, they were top notch. The F100 series wasn't available at that time.
The Big Cat was simply too heavy for their power output and its intended role. After all, these were the F-111 engines.
But if the Navy was real smart, they would have molten down the TF-30s for their valuable alloys 😉
The F100 derivative, F401 was installed into the F-14B in 1973. Better engines were available a decade earlier if they threw enough money at it.

Looks like an F-18 Hornet to me
It's the pre production development/prototype for the FA18.
Originally a product intended for the USAF, the YF-17 Cobra earned her wings with the USN as the FA-18 Hornet.
The F-18 is nothing more than a navalised version of the YF-17
