This is the very first classical piano recording I acquired as a school boy. Iooking back I now fully appreciate Giesekings wonderfully graded tone.

Beautiful. I have had this on record for about48 years. This is the standard to imitate, played by someone who knew how to play it well. His touch is perfection. Always.

I've got a cassett tape of him playing this, and on the other side, piano concerto No 4 in G. Great recordings and performance. ONly some people can do it properly, he's one of the people who can

I also have that cassett tape that I listened to as a kid. Made me learn Moonlight sonata on piano even though I am a guitar player. His feel on the piano is priceless. Really got me into exploring classical music.

Thank you so much for making this available for free! My music teacher insisted on me getting Geiseking, and not some other recording. Thank you so much! Keep up the good work.

This is beautiful. Bought a Furtwangler CD and he was playing Schumann piano concerto and so explored more of his playing.

Kicki355 I mean the 2nd part of the 5.piano concert was the most beautiful music of the world for me. My parents loved classical music and my father evan played in violine. I use to listen Beethoven´s concerts from my childhood and I remembered what my parents loved 2nd part of emperor piano concert. Thank you for your meaning. I warm agree .

yes ... Dana ... specially this 2nd Mov. of the emperor concerto drives me grazy again and again ...the timing comes from another planet

Dana, I agree his 2nd part on the Emperor concerto has not been surpassed even less matched. But I recommend his 1944 version, the first complete stereo recording of any classical masterpiece. It was recorded in the middle of heavy artillery fire in Berlin. Regarding the Moonlight sonata his performance is of the highest caliber, similar to Emil Gilel's performance at the Met in February 1969. As long as Beethoven is at hand humanity will still have a shelter where to look for protection.

I was deeply touched by this performance of such a played and abused work. Even Gilels cant match him in this one...

"This style of playing was compare like pearls spread on the glass". Obrigado Dana. Eu procuro, há mais de 50 anos, uma imagem que defina os sons produzidos por Gieseking. Você me deu essa imagem.

The Neapolitan is strong in this one.

The easiest thing is to make a fast version. Much easier to design and manage the musical phrase. Much easier to maintain tension and give emotion to the nuances. In my opinion, this can only be done by a spiritually advanced being, because he is extracting gold from the difficulty. He is giving his work its true and profound meaning through the most difficult way…

si le 1er mouvement de cette sonate est trop lent, ce qui est le cas ici, a mon gout,
cela assombrit le "clair de lune"...

Là on ne pourra pas lui reprocher de jouer trop lentement !!
